Nintendo Says Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 Sticks Aren’t Hall Effect—What That Means for Drift

Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 sticks are larger, smoother and more durable—but not Hall effect. That may improve reliability without eliminating the possibility of stick drift.

Nintendo has confirmed that the Switch 2’s Joy-Con 2 controllers do not use Hall effect thumbstick sensors. In an April 2025 interview, Nintendo of America executive Nate Bihldorff said the sticks were redesigned “from the ground up,” but “they’re not Hall Effect sticks.” Nintendo also says the new sticks are larger, smoother and more durable. That may improve their lifespan, but it does not make them drift-proof.

Nintendo’s answer is clear: Joy-Con 2 is not Hall effect

Asked directly about the Joy-Con 2 sticks, Nate Bihldorff told Nintendo Life on April 7, 2025 that they had been “designed from the ground up,” but were “not Hall Effect sticks.”

He described Nintendo’s focus as the playing experience, how the controllers interact with games, and improved durability. The comment was an interview response rather than a detailed component specification, but it is the clearest public confirmation that Joy-Con 2 does not use Hall effect sensing.

What Hall effect sticks do

Traditional analog sticks generally use potentiometers. As the stick moves, a physical wiper travels across resistive material to measure its position. That contact surface can wear or become contaminated, eventually causing the controller to report movement when the stick is supposed to be centered—a problem commonly called stick drift.

Hall effect sticks use magnets and magnetic sensors to detect position without the same electrical contact between a wiper and resistive track. That removes one important source of wear, which is why Hall effect controllers are often marketed as more resistant to drift.

Hall effect does not mean indestructible. Springs, housings, stick caps and other mechanical parts can still break, while calibration faults, loose components or damaged sensors can create problems. The technology reduces a particular wear mechanism; it does not guarantee a lifetime without failures. iFixit’s Switch 2 teardown explains the distinction between potentiometer, Hall effect and TMR designs.

What Nintendo says it changed

Nintendo says the Joy-Con 2 sticks are:

  • larger than the original Joy-Con sticks;
  • smoother to move;
  • redesigned from the ground up; and
  • more durable.

Those claims could still prove meaningful. A redesigned potentiometer can use different materials, tolerances, sealing or mechanical construction and may last longer than the original component. However, Nintendo has not published a cycle-count rating, comparative failure rate or guaranteed drift-free service life.

Its official Switch 2 developer discussion covers broader controller and ergonomic decisions, but it does not turn the durability claim into a quantified reliability specification.

What the teardown found

In its June 6, 2025 teardown, iFixit reported that the Joy-Con 2 stick appeared to use a potentiometer-style design. It found no visible Hall effect or TMR sensors and described the underlying sensing approach as broadly similar to the original Joy-Con’s.

That does not prove the new sticks are physically identical or will fail at the same rate. Dimensions, materials, tolerances, firmware and manufacturing quality may all differ. The teardown supports the conclusion that Joy-Con 2 retains a wear-related risk associated with potentiometer sensing, but it is not a multi-year, representative failure-rate study.

iFixit also gave the Switch 2 a 3/10 repairability score. Its teardown found concealed screws, adhesive and a difficult stick-removal process that could damage the stick or surrounding parts. That makes replacement possible in principle, but not a simple maintenance job for most owners.

Does this mean Joy-Con 2 will drift?

No—not as a certainty. The evidence supports three separate conclusions:

Question Best-supported answer
Does Joy-Con 2 use Hall effect sticks? No. Nintendo confirmed that it does not.
Did Nintendo redesign the sticks? Yes. Nintendo says they are larger, smoother and more durable.
Will Joy-Con 2 drift as often as the original? Unknown. No representative long-term comparison establishes the failure rate.

Individual owner reports can show that failures occur, but they cannot establish how common they are. Likewise, a teardown can identify the sensing technology but cannot prove identical service life. The most accurate verdict is that Nintendo may have improved durability without eliminating the underlying potentiometer-related risk.

Why might Nintendo have avoided Hall effect?

One plausible explanation comes from iFixit, not Nintendo. iFixit suggested that the magnets used by the Joy-Con 2’s new attachment system could complicate the use of Hall effect sensors.

That is an engineering inference, not a stated reason from Nintendo. Hall effect designs are not necessarily impossible in a magnetic controller: shielding, different layouts, TMR sensors or other solutions might be possible. The available evidence does not prove why Nintendo selected its final design.

What about the Switch 2 Pro Controller?

The direct Nintendo Life exchange specifically concerned Joy-Con 2. Tom’s Hardware reported that Nintendo also confirmed the Switch 2 Pro Controller would not use Hall effect sensors, but that broader claim should be read through the linked reporting rather than treated as a detailed official component specification.

If Hall effect sensing is your main buying criterion, check the current specifications for the exact controller model and region. Do not assume that a larger or more expensive official controller is Hall effect.

What to do if a Joy-Con 2 stick behaves incorrectly

  1. Test more than one game. A game-specific control setting can resemble drift.
  2. Check the stick’s physical movement. A stick that is difficult to move or does not return to center may have physical damage or obstruction rather than an electronic sensing fault.
  3. Use Switch 2’s controller calibration tools. Calibration may correct an offset, although it cannot repair worn sensing material.
  4. Install any required system or controller updates. Follow Nintendo’s current troubleshooting instructions.
  5. Contact Nintendo support. Nintendo maintains a Joy-Con 2 control-stick support page. Repair terms and eligibility vary by region and can change.
  6. Delay DIY disassembly while official service is available. Opening the controller can complicate a repair claim, and Joy-Con 2’s adhesive and concealed screws make the job more difficult than routine cleaning.

Do not assume that recalibration permanently fixes a worn stick. It can compensate for a small center offset, while contamination or component wear may cause the symptom to return.

Can you install Hall effect or TMR replacement sticks?

Potentially, but compatibility must be verified for the exact Joy-Con 2 revision. A replacement needs to fit the housing, connect correctly, clear the battery and other components, and work with the controller’s calibration and firmware behavior.

iFixit identified third-party replacement sticks as a likely future option. Nintendo Life reported in June 2025 that GuliKit was working on a magnetic Switch 2 replacement joystick. That report did not establish a finished product, final price, release date or universal compatibility.

A Hall effect or TMR replacement may reduce potentiometer wear, but it can introduce its own trade-offs: difficult installation, calibration problems, poor fit, altered stick behavior, uncertain firmware compatibility and possible warranty complications. It is a repair option for experienced users or qualified technicians—not a reason to open a working controller preemptively.

Which option makes sense for different buyers?

Priority Most sensible direction Trade-off
Keep detachable Joy-Con 2 features Official Joy-Con 2 No Hall effect confirmation; long-term drift rate remains unknown.
Use a larger traditional gamepad Official or third-party Pro-style controller It may lack detachable controllers, mouse controls or other Joy-Con features.
Minimize potentiometer wear A Switch 2-compatible Hall effect or TMR controller Compatibility, motion controls, NFC, ergonomics and wake features may differ.
Repair a faulty controller Nintendo service first; DIY second DIY repair requires tools, skill and a confirmed compatible part.
Experiment with magnetic replacement sticks Wait for a confirmed Switch 2-compatible module Availability and compatibility can change.

The bottom line

Nintendo improved the Joy-Con 2 design, but it did not make the sensor change many drift-conscious buyers were expecting. The sticks are not Hall effect, and iFixit’s teardown indicates that they retain a potentiometer-style sensing approach. That leaves the possibility of wear-related drift in place.

At the same time, it would be inaccurate to say Joy-Con 2 is guaranteed to drift or will fail exactly like the original. Nintendo claims better durability, and only long-term, representative use can show whether that redesign substantially lowers the failure rate.
