Nintendo Switch 2 Backward Compatibility Explained: Which Switch Games Work?

Nintendo Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Switch games, but accessory limitations, storage changes, and paid Switch 2 upgrades matter.

Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. But compatibility is not universal, and an original game running on Switch 2 is not automatically the same thing as a free performance upgrade or a full Switch 2 Edition.

Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, so backward compatibility is now an available feature rather than a future promise. Nintendo’s official position remains qualified: some games are unsupported, partially compatible, or dependent on original controllers and accessories.

Does Nintendo Switch 2 play original Switch games?

Compatible original Nintendo Switch games work on Nintendo Switch 2 in both physical and digital form. Nintendo confirmed the feature in its April 2, 2025 announcement, while its official compatibility checker identifies individual games with restrictions or known issues.

The important word is compatible. Do not assume that every Switch game, mode, accessory, or feature works exactly as it did on the original console.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch

  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

Do physical Switch cartridges work?

Yes. You can insert a compatible original Switch game card into Switch 2 and play the Switch version. Owning the cartridge does not automatically provide an enhanced Switch 2 Edition, however.

  • The original game card runs the original Switch software where supported.
  • A game may need a free update for selected Switch 2 features.
  • Some titles offer a paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade pack.
  • Compatibility and upgrade options vary by game and region.

Check the specific title in Nintendo’s compatibility database before buying the console or a used game.

Do digital Switch purchases carry over?

Compatible digital purchases are associated with the Nintendo Account that owns them, rather than being permanently locked to the old console. Sign in on Switch 2 with the purchasing account to access eligible software through the eShop and Nintendo’s virtual game-card system. Nintendo explains the account, virtual game-card, and console rules in its Switch and Switch 2 support documentation.

You may need to download the game again or load it through the virtual game-card system. Game compatibility and save-data migration are separate questions: do not assume that installing a game automatically transfers its saves. Use Nintendo’s applicable system-transfer or cloud-save process for the individual title.

Backward compatibility versus Switch 2 upgrades

These are four different situations:

Version What it means Typical cost
Original Switch version Your existing compatible game runs on Switch 2. No new purchase if you already own it.
Free Switch 2 update A publisher adds selected improvements such as performance, image quality, controls, HDR, or features. Free, where offered.
Paid upgrade pack Additional Switch 2 content or enhancements are sold for an eligible Switch game. Varies by title.
Switch 2 Edition A marketed enhanced version that may include the original game and additional Switch 2 content. Varies by title and format.

Backward compatibility alone does not promise higher resolution, HDR, faster loading, or a higher frame rate. Those improvements must be confirmed for each game. Nintendo’s 2026 financial-results material says owners of eligible packaged or downloadable Switch versions can purchase upgrade packs; certain Nintendo-published upgrades are available at no additional charge to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members.

Which games need original Switch Joy-Con?

Some games run on Switch 2 but cannot reproduce every feature with the included Joy-Con 2. Original Switch Joy-Con can be connected wirelessly for these situations, although they cannot physically attach to Switch 2.

  • Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Ring-Con.
  • Nintendo Labo Robot Kit: Joy-Con 2 cannot attach to the Toy-Con Robot accessory.
  • 1-2-Switch: Certain features require the infrared motion camera in the original right Joy-Con.
  • Game Builder Garage: Some infrared-camera programming functions require an original right Joy-Con.
  • Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training for Nintendo Switch: Some activities require the original right Joy-Con.
  • Nintendo Switch Sports: The original Joy-Con is needed for the leg-strap football mode.
  • WarioWare: Move It!: Certain infrared-camera-related microgames require an original right Joy-Con.

These are generally feature or control limitations, not blanket statements that the entire game fails to launch. Nintendo’s checker is the authority for the latest status.

What happens to Nintendo Labo and other accessories?

Software compatibility is broader than accessory compatibility. Nintendo says original Joy-Con and the original Switch Pro Controller can be used wirelessly with Switch 2, but original Joy-Con cannot attach to the new console or charge directly from it.

Mario Kart™ World (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam

Some Labo Toy-Con accessories are physically designed for the original Switch’s dimensions. Nintendo specifically identifies fit problems involving accessories such as the Fishing Rod, Motorbike, Piano, and House from the Variety Kit. The original Switch dock is also not compatible with Switch 2.

Original Joy-Con may therefore require a separate charging grip, charging stand, or the original Switch for charging. Whether another accessory works depends on the game, its required controller features, and its physical design.

Storage is different on Switch 2

Switch 2 has 256GB of internal storage, but expandable game storage requires a microSD Express card. A conventional Switch microSD card cannot be used for Switch 2 game storage, so moving your old card into the new console will not simply preserve your installed library.

Nintendo says older microSD cards can still be used for viewing screenshots and videos captured on Switch, but not as the normal storage solution for Switch 2 games. See Nintendo’s official storage and compatibility guidance before purchasing a card.

What happens to Nintendo Switch Online?

Your existing Nintendo Switch Online benefits remain available on Switch 2 for the subscribed Nintendo Account. Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack also provides access to Switch 2’s Nintendo GameCube—Nintendo Classics library, which launched with games including The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, SOULCALIBUR II, and F-ZERO GX.

This is separate from backward compatibility. The subscription does not turn old GameCube discs into digital games, and it is not required merely to play a compatible Switch game you already own.

How to check a game before buying Switch 2

  1. Open Nintendo’s Compatibility with Nintendo Switch games page.
  2. Search for the exact game title.
  3. Read whether it is supported, partially compatible, or affected by a known issue.
  4. Check whether it requires original Joy-Con, a particular accessory, or a specific control mode.
  5. Look for information about a free update or paid Switch 2 Edition upgrade.
  6. If buying digitally, confirm that the purchasing Nintendo Account is available on Switch 2.
  7. If buying physically, confirm that the product is an original Switch game card and check its listing before purchase.

Nintendo’s results and testing can change as software updates are released, so an undated third-party compatibility list should not replace the official checker.

Should you upgrade from Switch?

Switch 2 is a straightforward upgrade for owners with a large physical or digital library who want newer hardware while retaining access to compatible games. It is especially attractive if you want selected first-party enhancements and are comfortable keeping original Joy-Con for accessory-heavy titles.

The decision is less simple if your main games depend on Labo, Ring-Con, infrared-camera features, the original dock, or older microSD storage. It is also worth budgeting for title-specific upgrade packs rather than assuming every enhanced version is free. Nintendo’s U.S. product page lists Switch 2 at a $449.99 MSRP as displayed on August 18, 2026; prices and bundle promotions vary by market and retailer.

The practical conclusion is library continuity, not perfect preservation of every original Switch experience. Games, controllers, accessories, storage, saves, and enhanced editions each have separate rules.
