Yes—Nintendo Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but not every title or feature works perfectly. Some games have compatibility issues or require original Joy-Con. You can also reuse certain controllers and account services, but the original Switch dock and ordinary microSD cards do not serve the same roles on the new console.
Can I play Nintendo Switch games on Switch 2?
Compatible physical Switch game cards can be inserted into Switch 2. For digital purchases, link the Nintendo Account used to buy the games, then download the software. Both routes are subject to title-specific compatibility limits; owning the game does not guarantee every mode or function will work. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance and its game-transfer information explain the general rules.
How do I check whether a specific game works?
Check Nintendo’s current compatibility information for the exact title before relying on it. Nintendo warns that some Switch games may not be supported or fully compatible because Switch 2 hardware differs from the original system. Its published materials include examples of games that start but have in-game issues; the list can change, so a past listing is not a guarantee of current behavior.
Do not treat “starts up” as “works completely.” Confirm that the mode and features you care about function, and whether the game needs a controller sensor or accessory that Switch 2 does not provide. Nintendo’s compatibility page describes hardware-related cases. A dated Nintendo of Europe list of games that start but have in-game compatibility issues includes examples such as Alan Wake Remastered and Alien: Isolation; Nintendo said the listed issues were being investigated at the time of that document, so check the live listing rather than assuming that status still applies.

Which games need original Joy-Con?
Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 controllers do not attach to some original Switch accessories and lack certain features of the original controllers. In these cases, original Joy-Con can connect wirelessly, but they cannot attach to the Switch 2 console.
- Ring Fit Adventure: Joy-Con 2 cannot fit the Ring-Con or leg strap. Original Joy-Con can be used wirelessly.
- Nintendo Switch Sports Soccer Shoot-Out: the leg-strap function requires original Joy-Con.
- IR Motion Camera functions: specified modes in 1-2-Switch, Game Builder Garage, Dr Kawashima’s Brain Training and WarioWare: Move It! require an original right Joy-Con.
- Nintendo Labo: physical Toy-Con fit can prevent use with Switch 2; the Robot kit requires original Joy-Con.
These are examples, not a complete title list. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for the specific game and feature you plan to use.

Can I use my old Switch controller or accessories?
Many controllers pair with Switch 2, but charging, physical fit and game support differ by accessory.

Can I use my old microSD card?
Not to store Switch 2 games. Switch 2 is designed for microSD Express cards, while a conventional Switch microSD card can be used to view screenshots and videos captured on the original Switch. If you want expandable game storage, choose a microSD Express card; Nintendo’s guidance establishes the required format but does not specify a particular capacity or model.

Linking the Nintendo Account associated with digital purchases gives you access to eShop and lets you download eligible software. Nintendo Switch Online features and benefits are available on Switch 2 when the subscribed account is linked, although some features are exclusive to Switch 2. Virtual game cards can manage compatible digital games and DLC across Switch and Switch 2; Nintendo says they can be managed across up to two Switch 2 or Switch consoles at a time.

GameShare is separate from ordinary backward compatibility and works only with supported games. A Nintendo Switch can receive a locally shared game from Switch 2 but cannot initiate sharing. Do not assume that a game’s compatibility also establishes how its save data, cloud saves or online features behave; check Nintendo’s transfer and save instructions and the game’s own information when those details matter.
