What Square Enix announced at Nintendo Direct
Square Enix unveiled OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 during the Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase on July 31, 2025. The publisher described it as an HD-2D turn-based RPG with a standalone story set before OCTOPATH TRAVELER. Use familiar combat systems with a larger party
Nintendo’s US listing describes HD-2D visuals, combining pixel art with 3D computer graphics, alongside Path Actions and the Break and Boost battle system. Battles use commands; parties can include up to eight characters, and the game features more than 30 allies. A skill system lets players teach skills to allies and pass them to others. When did Octopath Traveler 0 come out?
OCTOPATH TRAVELER 0 launched on December 4, 2025, according to Square Enix. The publisher lists Steam’s release date as December 5, 2025. Its release notice also described a demo covering the first three hours, with saved data transferable to the full game; demo availability can change, so check the relevant store for its current status. Which platforms is it on?

Can the Switch 2 version play on the original Switch?
No. Nintendo’s listing is specifically for the Switch 2 edition and states that it cannot be played on the original Nintendo Switch. A separate original Switch edition is available, so make sure the selected listing matches the console.
