For most buyers, the choice is less about picking between different Switch 2 hardware models and more about choosing the right local package and deciding whether you need extra storage or controllers. Nintendo’s cited US specifications describe one core console configuration: 256 GB of internal storage and a 7.9-inch LCD. The only broadly useful add-on for some owners is a compatible microSD Express card; a case and extra controllers are optional.
Which Switch 2 model should you buy?
Nintendo’s current US specifications describe a Switch 2 with 256 GB of internal storage and a 7.9-inch LCD display, rather than multiple core hardware configurations to compare. Package availability and prices vary by market, so compare the standalone console with any currently offered bundle where you live.
Nintendo’s announced US suggested retail price is $499.99 before tax, effective September 1, 2026. Nintendo lists €499.99 for Europe from that date, and ¥59,980 for a Japanese-language-only system in Japan from May 25, 2026. These are regional figures, not a complete worldwide price list; local subsidiaries may announce different prices or dates. See Nintendo’s price revisions announcement and check the current price with your local retailer.
A bundle is worthwhile only if its total local price compares favorably with buying the console and included game separately—and you actually want that game. Nintendo announced a Mario Kart World bundle at launch, but that historical announcement does not establish that the package remains available in every market today. Confirm the bundle’s contents and current local price before choosing it.

Does Switch 2 need a memory card?
Not necessarily. The console includes 256 GB of internal storage. If you want more room for games, buy a microSD Express card: Nintendo says Switch 2 supports cards of this type up to 2 TB. Check the card or packaging for “EX” or “Express” before buying. A conventional microSD card is not a substitute for Switch 2 game storage; Nintendo says older standard cards can be used only to copy screenshots and videos from an original Switch.
Capacity and price are the practical comparison points once compatibility is confirmed. Nintendo’s technical specifications list the supported format and maximum capacity; its compatibility guidance explains the limits on older cards.

What to know about the screen, battery and portability
Nintendo lists a 7.9-inch LCD with 1920 × 1080 resolution and HDR10 support. Its estimated battery life is approximately 2–6.5 hours, depending on the games played; Nintendo calls these “rough estimates,” not guaranteed runtimes. Charging takes approximately three hours while the console is in Sleep mode. These specifications can help set expectations for handheld play, but actual battery life varies by game.
Which accessories are worth buying?
MicroSD Express card: only if you need more game storage
This is the direct choice for expanding Switch 2 game storage. Buy one only if the included 256 GB is not enough for your library, and make sure the product is specifically microSD Express. Standard microSD cards cannot store Switch 2 games.

Extra controllers: for local multiplayer or a different feel
Additional Joy-Con 2 controllers may suit local multiplayer, while the Switch 2 Pro Controller offers a conventional controller option. The original Switch Pro Controller also pairs wirelessly. Check the control modes supported by the games you play before purchasing, since controller needs depend on the game and how many people are playing.
Carrying case: for regular travel
A case is optional, but useful if you often take the console out of the house. Choose one made to fit Switch 2 rather than assuming an older Switch case will fit. This is a practical portability choice, not a Nintendo requirement.

The official sources cited here do not establish that a screen protector is required or recommend a particular product. If you choose one, verify that it is sized for Switch 2.

Some older accessories work, but compatibility is selective. Original Joy-Con can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to it; charging them requires a compatible old Joy-Con charging grip or stand. The original Switch Pro Controller pairs wirelessly. The original Switch dock is not compatible, and the original AC adapter cannot power Switch 2 in TV mode through its dock, though it can charge the console directly. Nintendo also lists the old HDMI cable as incompatible for maximizing Switch 2 performance.

Nintendo marks several original Joy-Con attachments—including the strap, grip, charging grip, wheel, leg strap, Ring-Con, battery pack and two-way charging stand—as incompatible with Joy-Con 2. Some can still be used with original Joy-Con connected wirelessly in supported games. Before keeping or replacing a specific item, look it up in Nintendo’s accessory compatibility table; do not assume an accessory made for original Joy-Con fits Joy-Con 2.
Will your original Switch games and account carry over?
The Switch 2 game-card slot accepts both Switch 2 and original Nintendo Switch game cards. Nintendo Account services, eShop funds and existing Switch Online memberships can continue on Switch 2, although compatibility may vary by game. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for the games and features that matter to you.
Nintendo also identifies accessibility features including adjustable display fonts and color tone, text verbalization and button customization. If you rely on a particular feature, confirm how it works in the specific games you plan to play. Nintendo’s Switch 2 announcement outlines these features.
