Nintendo Switch 2 is the official name of Nintendo’s successor to the Switch. Nintendo announced it on January 16, 2025, and released the console on June 5, 2025. The separate claim that full production had started remains unverified: the official announcements cited here do not establish when mass production began.
Did Nintendo use “Switch 2” as the final name?
Yes. Nintendo officially introduced the console as Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, describing it as the successor to Nintendo Switch and planning a 2025 release. Nintendo’s announcement settled the naming question; “Switch 2” was not merely a provisional leak label.

Nintendo later explained that it considered several names, including “Super Nintendo Switch.” In an April 2, 2025 developer interview, Nintendo Switch 2 producer Kouichi Kawamoto said: “So in the hope that it becomes the new standard for Nintendo Switch, we named it Nintendo Switch 2.” The team chose a name intended to make clear that this was the latest console in the Switch line and a successor. Nintendo’s interview with the developers also discusses why the team did not settle on “Super Nintendo Switch.”
Did full production start?
That part of the leak is not confirmed by the official sources cited here. Nintendo’s announcement of the console, its release date and the fact that the system went on sale do not, on their own, establish when full or mass production began. The production timing should therefore be treated as an unverified claim, not as a fact Nintendo confirmed.

On June 11, 2025, Nintendo said that more than 3.5 million units had sold worldwide in the console’s first four days. The figure came from Nintendo’s internal data, and the company called it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system ever. Nintendo’s report also gave a U.S. suggested retail price of $449.99; that was a launch-period MSRP reported in June 2025, not a current price quote.
