The Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con leak was reported on January 5, 2025, when two photos said to show a left controller circulated online—11 days before Nintendo officially revealed Switch 2. The images were alleged, not authenticated by Nintendo at the time. Nintendo later confirmed the retail controller’s magnetic attachment and supported-game mouse controls, but those confirmed features should not be treated as proof of what the photos showed.
When did the alleged Switch 2 Joy-Con image appear?
Nintendo Life reported that two photos depicting what appeared to be the left Joy-Con were posted online on January 5, 2025. Nintendo officially revealed Switch 2 on January 16, announcing that the successor to the original Switch would release in 2025. Its announcement also warned that some Switch games might not be supported or fully compatible. Nintendo Life’s account of the reported leak provides the January 5 chronology; Nintendo’s January 16 announcement marks the official reveal.

“Alleged” was the appropriate description when the photos first circulated. Nintendo Life says users also tried a purported serial number on Nintendo’s warranty site, but that detail is part of the outlet’s account, not an authentication by Nintendo in the official materials cited here. Nintendo later showed and described Switch 2 and Joy-Con 2, but its product announcements do not establish that it authenticated those specific January photos.
What did the leaked Switch 2 Joy-Con image show?
The reported photos were described as depicting what looked like a left Joy-Con. That is the reasonable limit of what can be said from the reporting: they prompted speculation about the successor’s controller, but a cropped or unclear image cannot substantiate every later-known feature. In particular, the eventual confirmation of magnetic connectors and mouse controls does not mean those details were conclusively visible in the alleged image.
#1 Best Overall
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
The useful distinction is between the leak-era claim and the retail product. Nintendo’s official information confirms what Joy-Con 2 became; Nintendo Life supplies the reported timing and retrospective assessment of the images. Neither should be substituted for the other.
What Nintendo later confirmed about Joy-Con 2
On April 2, 2025, Nintendo announced that Switch 2 would launch on June 5, 2025. Its release described Joy-Con 2 as attaching to the system magnetically: “Snap the Joy-Con 2 controllers onto the system with magnetic connectors.” It also confirmed that either controller can operate like a mouse in supported games. Nintendo’s April 2 release is the source for the launch date and these product details.
Rank #2
- The updated Joy-Con 2 controllers have motion controls and HD rumble 2, along with the new C Button for easy GameChat* access and all-new mouse controls in compatible games.
- This set includes both a left and right Joy-Con 2 controller (along with a pair of Joy-Con 2 straps)—perfect for local multiplayer with a friend in compatible games.
- Includes two Joy-Con 2 straps.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
Mouse control is a supported-game feature, not a claim that Joy-Con 2 replaces a PC mouse in every game or setting. Nintendo’s examples include using the right Joy-Con 2 as a mouse for aiming in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and using two controllers as mice in Drag x Drive. Nintendo also cautions that some surfaces or fabrics may not work properly for mouse operation. Nintendo’s developer interview discusses those game examples.

The retail controllers are not interchangeable across the two systems in both directions. Nintendo Support says original Switch Joy-Con can be used wirelessly with Switch 2, while Joy-Con 2 cannot connect wirelessly to the original Switch. Joy-Con 2 are larger, attach magnetically rather than by the original rail mechanism, and do not fit the original Joy-Con grip. Nintendo Support’s compatibility guidance explains the limits.
Rank #3
- The Joy-Con 2 (L) controller includes the Capture Button.
- Only for use with the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
These confirmed distinctions help explain why a controller photo attracted attention, but they do not independently verify the provenance or every detail of the alleged image. Nintendo’s April launch release also lists a 7.9-inch display and 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2; those are specifications of the launched system, not evidence about the contents of the leaked photos.
