Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, with reported lines in Seattle and at retailers across the United States and Japan. The crowds marked a major retail debut for Nintendo’s successor to the original Switch—not a measure of how many consoles were sold. Nintendo later reported more than 3.5 million systems sold worldwide in the first four days.

What happened at the Switch 2 launch?

GeekWire reported lines in Seattle and noted that retailers including Walmart, Target and GameStop took part in the launch. Reports also described queues in cities around the United States and Japan. The available reporting does not establish a verified total for Seattle attendees or a citywide queue count. GeekWire’s June 5, 2025, launch report captured the local scene as part of a wider retail event.

The Associated Press described gamers lining up before stores opened from Tokyo to New York City. In Japan, Nintendo’s My Nintendo Store lottery drew about 2.2 million applications, according to Nintendo as reported by AP. That figure counts applications to the lottery, not consoles sold or worldwide preorders. AP also reported that U.S. online preorders had sold out before some customers turned to launch-day store lines. The Associated Press’s launch coverage provides that broader context.

Reuters reported queues in Tokyo and said Target preorders sold out in less than two hours. It also quoted Kantan Games founder Serkan Toto describing demand as “sky-high”—an analyst’s assessment, not a sales tally. Reuters’ June 2025 report discussed the launch’s demand and software lineup.

How many Switch 2 consoles sold after launch?

Nintendo said more than 3.5 million Switch 2 systems were sold worldwide during the first four days after the June 5 launch, based on the company’s internal data. Nintendo called it the fastest-selling Nintendo game system in its history. This is a company-reported sales figure, distinct from the 2.2 million applications to Japan’s lottery. Nintendo’s June 11, 2025, sales announcement reported the four-day result.

What did Switch 2 cost at launch in the United States?

Nintendo of America announced a U.S. suggested retail price of $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for a bundle that included the system and a download code for Mario Kart World. These are historical launch prices announced in 2025, not current retailer prices. Reuters reported Mario Kart World’s U.S. sticker price as $79.99 at the time. Nintendo’s U.S. launch announcement gives the console and bundle prices; Reuters’ launch report gives the game’s contemporaneous price.

What was new about the console?

Nintendo positioned Switch 2 as a larger-screen successor with improved processing and graphics performance. Its U.S. launch announcement listed a 7.9-inch LCD screen with 1080p resolution, 256 GB of internal storage and magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers. Each Joy-Con 2 can function like a mouse in compatible games. A USB-C port on the top of the system, in addition to the bottom port, allows charging while playing in tabletop mode. Nintendo’s U.S. announcement details those launch specifications.

Do original Switch games and controllers work on Switch 2?

Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautioned that some older games may not be supported or may not be fully compatible. It is not accurate to assume every original Switch game works without issue. Nintendo’s Japanese launch information also says original Switch controllers and peripherals, including the Switch Pro Controller, can connect wirelessly. Check Nintendo’s compatibility information for a particular game or accessory before relying on it. Nintendo’s Japanese release announcement covers controller and system features; its U.S. launch announcement notes game compatibility limits.

Which social and sharing features did Nintendo announce?

GameChat

Nintendo said GameChat supports voice chat with up to 12 people, while up to four friends can share a screen. Video chat requires a compatible USB-C camera; Nintendo Switch 2 camera was one named example and was sold separately. The launch-period access that let players use GameChat without Nintendo Switch Online membership ended March 31, 2026. For membership terms now, consult Nintendo’s launch announcement and its current support information.

GameShare and Virtual Game Cards

Nintendo’s Japanese release information described GameShare, which lets a player with a compatible game invite others to play temporarily under specified conditions. Virtual Game Cards manage digital purchases across systems linked to an account; Nintendo says cards can be loaded on up to two systems per account at a time. These features have their own eligibility and setup conditions. Nintendo’s Japanese release announcement outlines them.
