“Physical” Nintendo Switch 2 games do not all work the same way. A full-data cartridge stores the game on the card; a Game-Key Card requires a full download and must remain inserted to play. The available reporting documents criticism of Game-Key Cards and a shift in some publishers’ format choices—but it does not establish that Nintendo exposed “hate grifters” or made a statement supporting that claim.
What makes a Switch 2 game a “true physical” copy?
The useful distinction is not simply physical versus digital. It is whether the cartridge itself contains the game data.

Because both formats use a physical card, a box or cartridge image alone does not tell you whether a full download is required. Nintendo Everything’s format explainer names Cyberpunk 2077 and Hades 2 as third-party examples complete on cartridge; check the exact edition and region before relying on either example when buying.
What is established—and what is not—about Nintendo and “hate grifters”?
The phrase “Nintendo exposes hate grifters” is not substantiated by the reporting available for this dispute. The sources document criticism of Game-Key Cards, but do not identify a group that Nintendo exposed or verify an alleged Nintendo statement. It is therefore more accurate to describe this as a debate about game-card formats and publisher choices, not a confirmed Nintendo takedown.

A 2026 Nintendo Everything article says most Nintendo-published physical Switch 2 releases were full-data cartridges at the time it was published, with Pokémon Pokopia identified as an exception. That is a time-sensitive account of Nintendo-published releases, not a claim about every third-party game or a permanent policy.
Why publishers choose Game-Key Cards—and why players object
The production-timing explanation
In a Nintendo Life interview published May 24, 2025, Limited Run Games CEO Josh Fairhurst said retail production requires a game to be completed and approved three to four months before its planned launch. He described Game-Key Cards as a way for publishers to prepare a retail product on that schedule while still accommodating games finished late. This is Fairhurst’s explanation and estimate, not a Nintendo policy statement.

Fairhurst also said Limited Run Games would use an actual cartridge for standard-edition Switch 2 games it manufactures and publishes, and that it had no plans to support Game-Key Cards for those titles. That position applies to the company’s own manufacturing and publishing work; it does not establish what other publishers will do.
The player tradeoffs
- Downloads and access: A Game-Key Card requires downloading the complete game, so the initial download depends on access to the necessary online infrastructure.
- Keeping the game: Players concerned about long-term preservation may prefer a cartridge with the game data on it. A Game-Key Card does not provide that same on-card copy.
- Resale: Game-Key Cards can be resold, but resale does not remove the requirement to download the game.
- Updates: A full-data cartridge can still require downloaded updates; “complete on cartridge” does not necessarily mean the game will never need an update.
What the Cyberpunk 2077 sales figure does—and does not—show
GamesRadar reported that CD Projekt Red said 75.4% of Cyberpunk 2077 Switch 2 sales in June were physical sell-in copies, based on the company’s financial presentation. Sell-in means copies shipped to retailers; some may still have been on shelves or in warehouses. It is not a measure of copies bought by consumers, and it does not establish a general physical-sales share for Switch 2 games.

How to check a game’s format before buying
- Identify the exact game and edition. Do not assume that a title’s other platform versions or editions use the same Switch 2 format.
- Look for an explicit format description. Check whether the product is identified as a Game-Key Card or says the game data is on the cartridge.
- Confirm the download requirement. If it is a Game-Key Card, plan for a full game download and the card to remain inserted during play.
- Check update expectations. A full-data cartridge may still need downloaded updates.
- Decide what matters most to you. Consider download access, preservation, the ability to resell the card, and whether you want the game itself stored on the cartridge.
For purchase searches, “Nintendo Switch 2 physical games” is a useful starting phrase, not a format guarantee. Verify the particular listing and edition before ordering.
