Choose a regular Switch 2 game card if you want a tangible copy you can lend or move between consoles; choose a digital purchase if you prefer account-based access and are comfortable managing it through Nintendo’s virtual game card or online-license settings. Check the specific release before buying: a Game-Key Card is physical packaging, but it requires downloading the game data.
What is the difference between a physical card and a digital download?
A regular game card contains the game software and is played by inserting the card. A digital purchase is associated with the Nintendo Account that bought it and is managed as a virtual game card or online license. These options differ most in how you access, share, and store a game—not in where its save data is kept.

“Physical” does not always mean the game is fully on the card. Nintendo’s Game-Key Card overview explains that a Game-Key Card acts as a key to download the game data. Check the box and the individual game listing to confirm which kind of card you are buying.
Does a Switch 2 physical game card contain the whole game?

A regular game card contains the game software, so you can start play by inserting it. Updates and downloadable content may still require storage.

Game-Key Cards
A Game-Key Card does not contain the full game data. You need an internet connection and enough free storage to download the game. Nintendo says an internet connection is required for the first launch, and the card must remain inserted to play. A Nintendo Account is not required to download the game data. Nintendo’s support page specifies system version 20.1.1 or higher for Game-Key Card software; check the packaging and current requirements for the title you are buying.
Can you play a digital Switch 2 game offline?
Yes, if the game is loaded as a virtual game card on the console. Nintendo says loaded virtual game cards can be played offline, and other users on that console can play them too.

Nintendo also offers an online-license setting. It can let you use a digital game on more systems, but the console needs an internet connection to check the license when you open the game. Play may be suspended after a period offline. See Nintendo’s digital game purchase support page for details on license access.
Can you lend or share physical and digital games?
A physical card can be lent to someone, but the same card cannot be used by two people at once. Digital sharing works differently: Nintendo lets you lend virtual game cards to members of your Nintendo Account family group. Its Switch 2 FAQ states that a loan lasts 14 days.

Virtual game cards can be loaded on up to two paired systems. The online-license option supports use on more systems, subject to its internet check. Under either digital method, the same game cannot be played simultaneously on multiple systems.
How much storage do Switch 2 games need?
Nintendo Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with some space reserved for system use. Downloaded games, updates, and DLC can use internal storage or an expansion card. Switch 2 supports only the microSD Express standard for expansion; older Switch microSD cards that do not meet that standard are incompatible. Regular card games can reduce the need to download a full game, but updates and DLC may still take space. Game-Key Cards require a full game download, and digital purchases use storage for the downloaded software. Expansion cards are sold separately. Nintendo’s data-management information also notes that, at the time of its page, no individual game required an additional card to play; that is not a permanent guarantee for future releases.

Save data is stored in the console’s system memory, not on the game card. Nintendo says using the same software from a card or an eShop download does not itself change the save data. Saves are generally associated with the user. Supported save data can be transferred between consoles, and Nintendo Switch Online members can use cloud backups for supported games. Verify support for the particular game before relying on cloud backup; Nintendo’s Switch 2 data management FAQ lists the relevant details.

Which format should you choose?

For a specific purchase, check the release format and compare the current price for the same game and edition in physical and digital listings. That avoids treating all boxed releases as full game cards or assuming one format always costs less.
