The Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, so its pre-order window is closed. Nintendo announced retail pre-orders for April 24, 2025, followed by the $449.99 standalone console and the $499.99 Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle at launch in the United States. If you are shopping now, the useful question is no longer where to pre-order, but where to buy a Switch 2, which version and accessories you need, and what has changed since launch.

What happened to the Switch 2 pre-orders?
Nintendo announced the June 5, 2025 release date on April 2, 2025 and said retail pre-orders would begin on April 24. Those dates are historical, not upcoming availability deadlines.

Can you still buy a Nintendo Switch 2?
Yes. Switch 2 is an established retail product rather than a pre-release system. Nintendo reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units sold worldwide by March 31, 2026, along with 48.71 million Switch 2 software units. Nintendo’s May 2026 financial briefing also reported 19.86 million hardware sales during the system’s first fiscal year and forecast 16.5 million hardware sales for the fiscal year ending March 2027.

A current GameStop product listing describes the system as having a 7.9-inch display, 256GB of internal storage, microSD Express expansion, a dock capable of outputting up to 4K with compatible equipment, and compatibility with physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. Retail price, stock, shipping speed, and bundle availability vary by country and retailer, so check the live listing immediately before buying rather than relying on the 2025 launch details.
For a current purchase search, compare the Nintendo Switch 2 console at an authorized retailer and confirm three things before checkout: that the listing is for the Switch 2 system rather than the original Nintendo Switch, that the seller ships to your region, and that the displayed price and delivery estimate are current.

Launch price and bundle recap
| Launch option | U.S. launch price | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 console | $449.99 | The standalone system. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle | $499.99 | The system bundled with Mario Kart World. |
These were Nintendo’s U.S. launch prices in 2025, not a guarantee of the current price or inventory. A bundle can still be worth comparing if a retailer offers one now, but do not assume that the original Mario Kart World package remains available or is automatically cheaper than buying the console and game separately.
Why the Switch 2 remains a strong purchase
The sales figures provide useful context: Mario Kart World had reached 14.70 million units worldwide by March 31, 2026. Other leading Switch 2 games listed by Nintendo include Donkey Kong Bananza, Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, Pokémon Pokopia, and Kirby Air Riders.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Those numbers show that the system has developed a substantial software library. They do not mean every game is included with a console, currently discounted, or available in every market. Check whether a listing is a full game, an upgrade or Switch 2 Edition, a physical cartridge, or a digital purchase before comparing prices.
The most important accessory change: storage
If you plan to buy digital games, storage is the accessory decision that deserves the most attention. Switch 2 uses microSD Express cards and supports capacities of up to 2TB. Nintendo says an ordinary microSD card cannot be used to save or load digital games and save data on Switch 2.
That means a microSD card that worked in an original Switch should not be assumed to work for Switch 2 game storage. Look specifically for a microSD Express card for Nintendo Switch 2, check its capacity and authenticity, and format it in the console if Switch 2 requests that step. Nintendo’s accessories catalog includes a licensed Samsung 256GB microSD Express card.
Choose capacity according to how you buy games:
- Mostly physical games: internal storage may be sufficient initially, although large updates and downloadable titles can still consume space.
- A mix of physical and digital games: a 256GB microSD Express card is a practical expansion point.
- Mostly digital games or a large library: consider a larger card, up to the supported 2TB capacity, and compare the cost with buying a smaller card now and upgrading later.
Which Switch 2 accessories are necessary?
The system already includes Joy-Con 2 controllers, so most accessories are optional. The right purchase depends on how you play.

| Accessory | Who should consider it | Is it required? |
|---|---|---|
| microSD Express card | Digital buyers or anyone who expects to install many games. | Not immediately, but it is the relevant storage expansion standard. |
| Switch 2 case and screen protector | Anyone carrying the console in a bag, travelling, or playing handheld frequently. | No, but protection is sensible for portable use. |
| Pro Controller | Players who primarily use the TV or prefer a traditional controller shape. | No. Joy-Con 2 controllers are included. |
| Additional Joy-Con 2 controllers | Families and local multiplayer groups. | No. Buy only if the included controllers are not enough. |
| Joy-Con 2 Charging Grip | Players who want a more conventional grip while charging or using Joy-Con 2 controllers. | No. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 Camera | Players interested in camera-enabled games and compatible communication features. | No. |
| Second dock or extra AC adapter | People who regularly play in two locations. | No. It is a convenience purchase. |
For protection, compare a Nintendo Switch 2 carrying case or a case-and-screen-protector combination designed for the 7.9-inch Switch 2 display. Do not assume that a case made for the original Switch or Switch OLED model will fit correctly. Nintendo also sells a Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector and a Switch 2 All-In-One Carrying Case.
Should you buy the Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller?
Only if its use case matches your setup. It is an optional upgrade for TV play, long sessions, or players who prefer a traditional gamepad. It is not a required launch accessory, because the console includes Joy-Con 2 controllers. For multiplayer, buying another Joy-Con 2 set may be more useful than buying a Pro Controller; for solo TV play, the Pro Controller may be the more comfortable choice.

- Confirm the model. Make sure the listing says Nintendo Switch 2, not Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, or a refurbished original model.
- Check the region. Confirm currency, warranty coverage, game compatibility details, shipping destination, and return terms.
- Compare the package contents. Identify whether you are buying the console alone, a game bundle, or a package with third-party accessories.
- Verify the live price and stock. Retailer availability changes; the 2025 preorder events do not predict today’s inventory.
- Budget for storage if needed. Choose microSD Express, not a standard microSD card, for Switch 2 digital games and save data.
- Buy protection for handheld use. A system-specific case and screen protector are more defensible purchases than a second dock or premium controller for most first-time buyers.
- Check the game edition. If buying a Switch title, confirm whether it runs as an original Switch game, has a Switch 2 Edition, or requires a separate upgrade.
Bottom line for shoppers in 2026
The original pre-order story ended with the June 5, 2025 launch. There is no reason to wait for the April 24, 2025 preorder window or to treat launch-day Target procedures as current. Shop the live retail market instead, compare the standalone console with any currently listed bundle, and verify price and stock on the day you purchase.
For most buyers, the sensible add-ons are a microSD Express card if the library will be digital and a Switch 2-specific case or screen protector for handheld use. The Pro Controller, camera, extra Joy-Con 2 controllers, charging grip, and second dock are situational upgrades rather than requirements.
