In the United States, the Switch 2 preorder rollout had two separate problems: Nintendo postponed its planned April 9, 2025 opening while it assessed tariffs and market conditions, then retailers faced long waits, checkout errors and rapid sellouts when preorders finally began on April 24. Nintendo said the delay would not change the console’s June 5 launch date. The available reporting links the later checkout trouble to high demand, not directly to tariffs.
Why were Switch 2 preorders delayed?
Nintendo announced Switch 2 on April 2, 2025, and initially planned to open U.S. preorders on April 9. On April 4, it said that date would not go ahead while it assessed “the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions.” A Nintendo spokesperson gave that explanation to TechCrunch; Nintendo said it would provide updated preorder timing later and that the June 5 launch date remained unchanged. This was a delay to the preorder schedule, not an announced delay to the console’s release. Nintendo’s April 2 announcement described Switch 2 as the successor to Nintendo Switch, with a larger screen, magnetically attached Joy-Con controllers, faster processing and improved graphical performance.
What went wrong when U.S. preorders opened?
Preorders began shortly after midnight on April 24. The Associated Press reported that buyers encountered long waits, error messages and carts that emptied during checkout; some orders were canceled, and several retailers sold out quickly. Target and Best Buy showed the console unavailable early that morning. GameStop’s online preorder inventory appeared to sell out within minutes, although its stores still had preorder availability that afternoon. Walmart said in an emailed statement to the AP that the online preorder excitement was “incredible” and that its early listings sold out quickly because of high demand. The AP’s April 24 account.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Those reports describe a rough checkout and scarce retailer availability, but they do not establish a failure rate. The AP said retailer preorder capacity was not immediately clear, and the reporting does not count how many U.S. shoppers saw errors, abandoned checkout or had an order canceled. It therefore cannot show how many units each retailer received or how many buyers were affected.
Did ordering from Nintendo guarantee launch-day delivery?
No. Nintendo cautioned that buyers placing orders through the My Nintendo Store should not assume delivery by June 5. The company encouraged people seeking a better chance of having the console on launch day to check participating retailers. That caveat was about delivery timing, not a promise that another retailer would have stock. Nintendo Life’s April 24 update.

What do we know about demand—and what don’t the numbers mean?
Nintendo later reported that Switch 2 sold through more than 3.5 million units worldwide in its first four days after launch on June 5. The company defines sell-through as sales to individual consumers by retailers and its direct-sales websites. In its August 1, 2025 first-quarter report, Nintendo said demand had surpassed expectations and that it was strengthening production to increase supply. Nintendo’s first-quarter FY2026 report.
That global post-launch figure is evidence of strong demand, not a count of U.S. preorders, preorder attempts or checkout failures. Other figures sometimes mentioned alongside the U.S. rollout need the same care: the roughly 2.2 million applicants reported for Nintendo’s preorder lottery were in Japan, not the United States. The AP reported a U.S. launch baseline price of $449.99; that is a historical launch-price reference, not a current price quote.

How should the “total mess” headline be understood?
It fits the reported experience of many hopeful buyers on April 24: checkout friction and fast sellouts made securing a preorder difficult. But it should not be read as a measured nationwide failure rate or as proof that tariffs caused the checkout issues. Nintendo cited tariffs and changing market conditions for postponing the original April 9 preorder date; contemporaneous coverage attributed the April 24 retailer rush and sellouts to high demand. The evidence supports a messy opening, followed by a successful high-demand launch—not a precise tally of failed orders.
