The $399 Nintendo Switch 2 price was an analyst’s prediction, not a price Nintendo confirmed. Nintendo’s U.S. launch MSRP for the standalone system was $449.99 in 2025; it is $499.99 effective September 1, 2026, before sales tax.
Was the $399 Switch 2 price confirmed?
No. On February 18, 2025, Nintendo Life reported that analyst Joost van Dreunen predicted Nintendo would “likely” price the console at $399. The figure came from his SuperJoost Playlist newsletter; it was commentary about expected pricing, not an official announcement or confirmed leak. Nintendo Life’s report

Van Dreunen, author of One Up: Creativity and Competition, and the Global Business of Video Games and co-founder of SuperData Research, wrote: “Based on current market dynamics and platform positioning strategy, Nintendo is likely to price the Switch 2 at $399.” The quoted sentence is his forecast, not a statement from Nintendo. What does the Nintendo Switch 2 cost now?
Nintendo of America’s U.S. MSRP for the standalone Nintendo Switch 2 is $499.99 effective September 1, 2026. Why did the analyst predict $399?
Van Dreunen’s reasoning, as reported by Nintendo Life, was that $399 could position the Switch 2 between affordable and premium: below premium competitors while above the original Switch, and at a level he viewed as balancing stronger hardware ambitions with access for mainstream customers. Those were his market-positioning arguments, not verified information about Nintendo’s costs, margins or internal pricing decisions. Nintendo Life’s report
What are the announced prices in Japan and Europe?
Nintendo’s May 2026 corporate schedule lists these changes for the specified products and markets. The figures are not directly comparable to U.S. prices because Nintendo says the Japan and Europe prices include tax, while U.S. prices exclude it.

Nintendo attributed the September 2026 U.S. revision to “various changes in market conditions” that it expected to persist over the medium to long term. The notice gives that general explanation; it does not specify individual cost factors. Nintendo’s U.S. price notice

How to compare Switch 2 prices accurately
- Check the date: a launch-era price may no longer be current.
- Check the market and tax basis: U.S. MSRP excludes sales tax; Nintendo’s listed Japan and Europe prices include tax.
- Check the configuration: compare a standalone console with another standalone console, not with a game bundle.
- Check the claim’s status: $399 was an analyst’s prediction, while Nintendo’s later figures were announced MSRPs.
