Nintendo officially confirmed that date on April 2, 2025, so the console is no longer an upcoming release. The phrase “launches this June” was accurate before launch, but it is misleading in a current article published in September 2026.
The official Nintendo Switch 2 release date
Nintendo first announced on January 16, 2025, that the successor to Nintendo Switch would arrive sometime in 2025. The exact date came later: in its April 2, 2025 announcement, Nintendo confirmed that Nintendo Switch 2 would be released on June 5, 2025.

That was both the announced release date and the actual launch date. Nintendo subsequently said the system and Mario Kart World were available beginning June 5 in its launch-day announcement.

What “this June” gets right—and wrong
| Claim | Verdict |
|---|---|
| Nintendo officially confirmed the release date | Correct |
| The console launched in June | Correct historically |
| The console launches this June | Accurate before June 5, 2025; misleading afterward |
| The exact release date | June 5, 2025 |
| Current status in September 2026 | Already released |
For a current article, the accurate wording is: “Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025.” If discussing the original announcement, use: “Nintendo announced the June 5, 2025 release date on April 2, 2025.” Relative phrases such as “this June” should always include a year when an article may remain online after the event.

U.S. launch prices
Nintendo’s U.S. launch announcement listed these suggested retail prices:
- Nintendo Switch 2: $449.99.
- Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle: $499.99, including a digital copy of Mario Kart World.
These are 2025 U.S. launch MSRPs, not guaranteed retail prices in September 2026. Current store prices, stock, discounts, and bundle availability can change, so buyers should check Nintendo’s official product information and current retailers separately.
Prices also varied by region. Nintendo listed a Japanese-language system at 49,980 yen and a Mario Kart World set at 53,980 yen. Those figures should not be converted directly into U.S. prices because taxes, distribution costs, and regional pricing policies differ.

What was available at launch?
The June 5 launch included or was associated with several different types of software. They should not all be treated as identical launch products:
- Launch-day release: Mario Kart World launched alongside the console.
- Launch-day software: Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour was scheduled for the same date.
- Enhanced Switch games: Enhanced editions of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom were part of the early software offering.
- Classic games: Nintendo GameCube – Nintendo Classics was announced for release on June 5, 2025.
- Backward-compatible software: Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games.
- New system feature: GameShare allows supported games to be shared with other players who do not own the game.
Games announced during the same presentation but scheduled for later in 2025 or 2026 should not be described as June 5 launch titles. Nintendo’s investor-relations materials provide additional launch and software information.
Key hardware features announced by Nintendo
Nintendo highlighted a larger, higher-quality screen, faster processing, improved graphics performance, and Joy-Con 2 controllers that attach magnetically. The controllers can also function as mice in supported software.

The system introduced new communication features through GameChat, including communication and screen-sharing functions. These are Nintendo’s announced capabilities; they should not be confused with independent performance testing or a guarantee that every game uses every feature.
Backward compatibility has limits
Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games. “Compatible” matters: it does not necessarily mean every Switch title works identically, or that every game receives a free enhancement.
Depending on the title, players may encounter required updates, differences in performance, unavailable features, separate paid Switch 2 Edition upgrades, or limitations involving accessories, save data, downloadable content, or peripherals. Check Nintendo’s current compatibility information for individual games before buying or upgrading.

- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
Game pricing also requires care. Nintendo’s support documentation says that, beginning with May 2026 preorders, new Nintendo-published digital Switch 2 exclusives can have an MSRP different from their physical versions. Do not assume that a 2025 launch price or an older comparison still reflects current software pricing; consult Nintendo’s current pricing guidance.

Nintendo reported that Switch 2 sold more than 3.5 million units worldwide during its first four days, calling it the company’s fastest-selling game system at that point. This is a figure reported by Nintendo, not independently audited market data.

The console’s launch date and launch MSRP are settled historical facts, but buying conditions are not frozen in 2025. Before purchasing, check:
- Whether the listed price is a current retailer price or the original MSRP.
- Whether a Mario Kart World bundle includes a digital copy and whether you want that game.
- Whether your existing Switch games are compatible and whether enhancements require a paid upgrade.
- Whether a particular accessory or peripheral works with Switch 2 and is actually required.
- Whether GameChat or related online features require Nintendo Switch Online, a camera, or other conditions in your region.
- Whether the listing comes from an authorized retailer rather than an unverified marketplace seller.
Retailer preorder timing, shipping, pickup windows, and midnight-release policies were separate from Nintendo’s official worldwide release date. The fact that a particular store made units available at a different time does not change the June 5, 2025 launch date.
