Nintendo first announced Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, describing it as the successor to Nintendo Switch. On April 2, the company set the release date for June 5, 2025. Nintendo’s launch-day announcement confirmed that the system was available on that date.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa described the console as “the next step in at-home gaming that can be taken on the go based on eight years of play and discovery that began with Nintendo Switch.”
What were the US launch prices?
In its April 2, 2025 announcement, Nintendo listed US suggested launch prices of $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for a bundle with Mario Kart World. What features did Nintendo announce?
Nintendo’s June 5 launch announcement highlighted the following hardware and features:
- A 7.9-inch built-in LCD screen with 1080p full HD resolution.
- 256 GB of storage, with some space reserved for system use.
- Magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, including mouse controls in compatible games.
- A built-in microphone and GameChat.
Video chat for up to four people requires a compatible USB-C camera, sold separately. The camera is optional for that video feature, not a requirement for ordinary console use.

Which games were available at launch?
Nintendo announced more than 20 launch games, including Mario Kart World and titles from publishing partners. Can Nintendo Switch 2 play original Switch games?
Switch 2 supports compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or may not be fully compatible. How quickly did Switch 2 sell after launch?
Nintendo reported that more than 3.5 million Switch 2 systems were sold worldwide in the first four days after launch. The June 11, 2025 figure was based on Nintendo’s internal data; the company called Switch 2 its fastest-selling game system.
