That is a listing estimate, not a verified installed size or a total that includes later updates: the listing reviewed here shows an October 27, 2026 release date, which is still in the future as of October 9, 2026. How much storage does Minecraft need on Switch 2?
Nintendo’s US product listing estimates the Minecraft for Switch 2 game file at 1.2 GB. Because that listing showed an October 27, 2026 release date when checked on October 9, 2026, treat 1.2 GB as Nintendo’s pre-release estimate—not a confirmed download or installed size. The figure also does not establish how much space the game will use after updates or with additional content.

How much space will Minecraft updates need?
Nintendo’s cited pages do not specify Minecraft update sizes, a recurring update allowance, or a cumulative post-update footprint. Update requirements can’t be calculated from the 1.2 GB listing estimate, so there is no evidence-based fixed buffer to promise. Check the eShop listing and available space in System Settings > Data Management when installing or updating.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Is Switch 2’s internal storage enough?
Nintendo says Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage, with some capacity reserved for system use. That is the console’s stated capacity, not the amount available for games. Nintendo also says no individual games currently require additional storage to play, so an expansion card is not a stated requirement for playing Minecraft. What storage card works with Switch 2?
If you want more room for downloaded games, updates, DLC, screenshots, or video, Nintendo supports microSD Express cards, up to 2 TB. Ordinary microSD cards used with earlier Switch consoles cannot save or load digital games on Switch 2. Nintendo’s rule is direct: “Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards.” Confirm that a card’s product listing explicitly identifies it as microSD Express. Nintendo’s card compatibility guidance · Nintendo’s microSD Express FAQ
Game save data stays in system memory, not on the microSD Express card. Nintendo recommends using one card with the console; software stored across multiple cards cannot later be combined onto one card.

Which storage option makes sense?
| Option | What it means for Minecraft | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Console internal storage | No extra card is stated as necessary to play Minecraft. Available space is less than the 256 GB total because system use and other content take capacity. | You have room for the game and any downloads or updates when needed. |
| microSD Express card | Adds storage for downloaded software, updates, and DLC. Saves remain in system memory. | You want more capacity for a broader game library or media. Choose a card explicitly marked microSD Express. |
Nintendo’s guidance does not compare specific card brands, prices, or real-world performance. Choose capacity for your overall library and media rather than treating a particular card size as a Minecraft requirement.
