Yes—Switch 2 system version 21.0.0 caused video-output problems for some third-party docks and USB-C display adapters. It did not disable every unofficial dock, and there is no public proof that Nintendo added an authentication lock. Nintendo says it did not intend to hinder legal third-party accessories; in at least one confirmed case, a manufacturer firmware update restored compatibility.
What happened after version 21.0.0?
Nintendo released Switch 2 system version 21.0.0 on November 10, 2025. Its published changelog lists interface, virtual-game-card, transfer, VR-volume and stability changes, but does not mention a third-party-dock block: Nintendo’s update history.
Owners subsequently reported that some portable docks and USB-C-to-HDMI adapters still charged the console but no longer produced a television or monitor signal. Other symptoms included intermittent HDMI output, the console remaining in handheld mode, failed USB or Ethernet functions, and trouble waking while connected. These reports describe a compatibility regression, not proof that every dock was permanently damaged.
Tom’s Hardware reports that Nintendo said it had “no intention to hinder or invalidate legal third-party dock compatibility” (report). That addresses intent, not the practical fact that particular products stopped working after the update.

Did Nintendo block all third-party docks?
No. The evidence supports model-specific failures. Compatibility can depend on a dock’s chipset, USB-C implementation, power path, firmware and display adapter design. Some products continued to work, while others needed vendor updates.
Do not treat speculation about DRM, authentication or a deliberate security check as established fact. JSAUX says changes to the Switch 2 USB-C handshake and/or power-management behavior affected some of its adapters, but Nintendo has not publicly documented that technical explanation: JSAUX’s statement.

Product information is available on the CV0087 product page. A $19.99 sale price was displayed when that page was crawled; pricing and availability are not permanent. JSAUX also warns that future Switch 2 updates could create new compatibility problems, so the firmware fix is not a guarantee for every later system version.

1. Record the Switch 2 system version
- Open System Settings.
- Scroll to System.
- Select System Update and note the installed version.
Nintendo’s support page documents this path: Switch 2 system-update information. Version 21.0.0 is the historical trigger; Nintendo’s support information lists version 22.5.0, released June 15, 2026, as the latest version found there. Do not assume that 22.5.0 fixes every third-party model.
2. Restart the console
- Hold the POWER button for at least three seconds.
- Choose Power Options.
- Select Restart.
A restart can clear display-initialization problems, including reports involving official docks. It cannot be treated as proof that a particular third-party dock is permanently incompatible.

3. Simplify the video path
- Use the dock maker’s recommended AC adapter, or Nintendo’s adapter where the manufacturer permits it.
- Try a known-good HDMI cable and another HDMI input.
- Test a second television or monitor if possible.
- Connect the dock directly; remove HDMI switches, AV receivers, capture cards, extenders and USB-C hubs.
- Check whether charging, USB data and Ethernet work separately from HDMI.
This separates a protocol mismatch from inadequate power, a bad cable, display-handshake problems or a defective accessory.
4. Check the manufacturer’s exact support page
Identify the brand, model number and hardware revision. Look specifically for a firmware notice mentioning Switch 2 version 21.0.0. Third-party products do not share Nintendo’s update menu: a vendor may require a Windows utility, a USB connection, external power or a particular cable. Never flash firmware for a similar-looking model.

For the JSAUX CV0087, use the company’s published instructions and compatibility statement. If an updater cannot detect the dock, stop rather than repeatedly flashing it; wrong-model firmware, an unsupported operating system, missing power or an unsuitable cable can all cause detection failures.

6. If no update exists
- Contact the manufacturer with the dock model, hardware revision, console version, display, power adapter and exact symptoms.
- Ask whether a 21.0.0 compatibility patch is planned or already available.
- Check the retailer’s return and warranty terms.
- Use the official Switch 2 dock temporarily if television output is urgent.

Do not confuse the official dock updater with a universal fix
For the official Switch 2 dock, Nintendo documents System Settings → System → Dock Update → Begin Update; the console must be docked: official dock-firmware instructions. That menu is not a generic updater for third-party USB-C accessories.
Nintendo’s original-Switch dock process is separate and applies only to dock model HEG-007, the OLED-model dock with a LAN port: Nintendo’s original-Switch instructions. Replace or return the dock only after confirming the exact model, testing power and HDMI with a simplified setup, checking for vendor firmware and contacting support. A dock that still charges but lacks video may be recoverable. Conversely, an accessory with no power, no USB enumeration and no response after the maker’s approved procedure may have a hardware fault.

The conservative option is Nintendo’s official Switch 2 dock because its firmware and support path are documented by Nintendo. No current standalone U.S. replacement price is established here, so treat marketplace prices as separate, time-sensitive information.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I roll back Switch 2 system firmware?
The cited Nintendo support pages do not document a consumer rollback procedure. Do not attempt an unofficial downgrade to solve a dock problem.
Will a factory reset repair a dock that charges but has no HDMI output?
There is no evidence here that resetting the console repairs a dock protocol mismatch. Test cables, power, displays and the manufacturer’s firmware first.
Is it safe to keep charging through the dock while HDMI fails?
Charging-only behavior does not prove that every electrical condition is safe. Stop using the accessory if it becomes hot, smells abnormal, damages cables or loses power, and ask the manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
Can I use my original Switch dock with Switch 2?
Do not assume compatibility. Nintendo treats Switch 2 and original-Switch docks as separate accessories; use a dock explicitly supported for Switch 2.
The Bottom Line
Version 21.0.0 created a genuine but selective compatibility problem: some third-party Switch 2 docks lost video while continuing to charge. Nintendo denies intentionally blocking legal accessories, and the available evidence does not prove an authentication lock. Check the exact model, simplify the HDMI and power setup, then apply the manufacturer’s firmware—such as JSAUX’s CV0087 update—before replacing the dock.
