A Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade pack adds title-specific enhancements to a compatible Nintendo Switch game you already own. It is not a replacement for the original game: you need the base game to use the pack, and the enhanced features work only on Nintendo Switch 2. If you are buying the game for the first time, a Switch 2 Edition bundle combines the game and its upgrade pack.
What is a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade pack?
Nintendo describes a Switch 2 Edition as a bundle of the original Nintendo Switch game and its upgrade pack. The pack changes or adds features for play on Switch 2; the original game remains playable on the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo says the Switch 2 Edition features and content are available only on Switch 2. Nintendo Support explains the format, while Nintendo UK’s overview notes that each game’s enhancements differ.
What can an upgrade pack add?
There is no single standard set of upgrades. Depending on the game, a pack may improve visuals or performance, add features or modes, or provide new game content. Some packs focus on technical improvements and do not change the game’s content, so check the specific listing before buying.
Examples of title-specific enhancements
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom: Nintendo lists smoother frame rates, faster loading, enhanced resolution and textures, two separate manual save files, and a game-specific Nintendo Switch App service. See Nintendo’s support page.
- Card-en-Ciel: its listing names increased frame rates, a 4K resolution mode, and mouse support.
- Trails in the Sky 2nd Chapter: its listing names higher resolutions, improved textures, and improved frame rates, and explicitly says the game content is unchanged.
- Simogo Legacy Collection: its listing describes mouse controls and title-specific performance and resolution modes.
Nintendo’s product listings for these examples are on the Nintendo Store. Specifications are specific to each title; they should not be read as a promise that every upgrade pack offers the same modes or performance.

Upcoming listing: Xenoblade Chronicles 3
Nintendo’s listing describes a Xenoblade Chronicles 3 upgrade pack with new game content and features, and says the full game is required. It gives a December 3, 2026 release date, which is after the information checked for this article on October 4, 2026; treat it as an upcoming listed release, not an already available pack. The listing distinguishes the add-on pack from the separately named Switch 2 Edition, which combines the game and pack. Check the listing for its current status.
How to get an upgrade
If you already own the original game
- Find the game’s individual upgrade pack in Nintendo eShop or Nintendo Store, or look for a retailer download code where offered.
- Check the listing for the pack’s contents, price in your region, and any special conditions.
- Acquire the pack and use it with the original game on Nintendo Switch 2. The pack does not remove the requirement to own the base game.
If you do not own the original game
Look for the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition bundle, which includes the game and its upgrade pack. Nintendo’s UK overview describes physical and digital formats, but physical availability can vary by game and market. Confirm that the exact title and format are offered where you shop.

Can Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack include an upgrade?
Yes, but only for selected packs. Nintendo specifically lists the Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom Switch 2 Edition upgrade packs as benefits for active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack members who own the corresponding original game, physical or digital. Membership does not include every upgrade pack. Check Nintendo’s membership benefits. For the US Tears of the Kingdom pack, Nintendo Support lists a price of $9.99 USD and says eligible active members can download it at no additional cost; that amount is specific to this pack and the US support context. What to check before choosing a pack or bundle
- Base-game ownership: confirm whether you already own the original Switch game; an upgrade pack requires it.
- Actual changes: look for technical upgrades, extra modes or features, and any new game content. Do not assume a pack adds story content.
- Price and region: check the individual pack’s local listing. The US Tears of the Kingdom price is not a general price for all packs or regions.
- Membership eligibility: verify that the specific pack is included, and that you have an active Expansion Pack membership and the corresponding original game.
- Bundle format: if you are starting without the original game, compare an available Switch 2 Edition bundle against acquiring the game and pack separately.
