Nintendo Switch 2 is a game console; Nintendo Switch Online is a paid membership service. They are separate purchases, and buying a Switch 2 does not include a membership. Nintendo does not identify “Console Archive” as an official product or service name, so this comparison addresses the likely intended question: how the Switch 2 console differs from Nintendo Switch Online.

What’s the difference?

The Switch 2 is the hardware you use to play games. Nintendo Switch Online is an account-linked service that adds benefits on compatible Switch and Switch 2 consoles. Nintendo says members can use their benefits on any compatible console linked to their Nintendo Account; owning the console alone does not provide those membership benefits. Nintendo’s U.S. membership page and its Switch and Switch 2 compatibility guidance describe the distinction.

What does Nintendo Switch Online include?

The standard membership is for players who want selected online features and libraries without the Expansion Pack tier. Benefits include:

  • Online play in compatible games.
  • Save Data Cloud backup for supported games.
  • Access to Nintendo Classics collections for NES, Super NES, and Game Boy.
  • Nintendo Music and special offers.

Game and service availability may vary by region. Nintendo’s U.S. page describes its classic-game library as “over 150 favorites”; that is Nintendo’s stated count on the page accessed October 7, 2026, not an independently audited total. Check the current service page for the latest benefits and library details.

How do the two membership tiers compare?

Benefit Nintendo Switch Online Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack
Online play and cloud saves Online play for compatible games and cloud backup for supported games. Includes standard membership benefits.
Classic games NES, Super NES, and Game Boy collections. Adds selected Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis libraries. On Switch 2, also includes selected GameCube titles.
Additional content Nintendo Music and special offers. Includes standard benefits plus selected DLC and Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Packs, subject to game and membership conditions.
GameChat on Switch 2 Available with a membership. Available with a membership.

Expansion Pack content is not a permanent game purchase: included DLC requires the base game, and access to the included content pauses if the membership lapses. Nintendo’s membership overview and Expansion Pack page list the current included benefits. Libraries and benefits can change and may differ by region.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online for Switch 2?

No membership is needed simply to own or use the console, but a membership is required for online play in compatible games and for the service’s other member benefits. GameChat is available on Switch 2 with either membership tier. Nintendo Support says its no-membership open-access period ended March 31, 2026; under Nintendo’s published rule as of October 7, 2026, a membership is now required to use GameChat. A Nintendo Account, internet access, country availability, and applicable terms also matter. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online Service FAQ for current conditions. A compatible USB-C camera is sold separately for video features; it is not required for ordinary voice chat, according to Nintendo UK’s Switch 2 features page.
