Nintendo Switch 2 vs. PS4: What the RTX 2050 Performance Projection Got Right

The RTX 2050 laptop test never proved Switch 2 performance, but it correctly anticipated a console with modern Nvidia features and DLSS-enabled image quality beyond a simple base-PS4 comparison.

Short answer: the 2023 RTX 2050 test was not a Switch 2 benchmark, but its direction was broadly right. It did not prove that Nintendo’s later console would beat the base PlayStation 4 in every workload. It did anticipate a hybrid system with modern Nvidia features, DLSS-assisted image quality, hardware ray tracing, and enough graphics capability to make a simple “Switch 2 is just a portable PS4” comparison inadequate.

Real games now show the necessary qualification. Switch 2 can deliver sharper reconstructed images and some surprisingly high-quality assets, but demanding ports still use 30-frame-per-second targets, reduced world density, lower internal resolutions, or compromised effects—and can drop below their targets in complex scenes.

This is therefore best understood as a retrospective update to the original November 2023 projection, using post-launch evidence available through August 12, 2026.

The original projection was a proxy test, not a Switch 2 measurement

In November 2023, the Switch 2 and its presumed Nvidia Tegra T239 processor had not been publicly confirmed in full. The original article could not test Nintendo hardware, so it used a substitute: a Dell Vostro laptop with an Intel Core i7-1360P processor and a mobile GeForce RTX 2050.

That laptop GPU had 4 GB of dedicated video memory and was downclocked to 750 MHz. The goal was to approximate the kind of graphics behavior that a projected T239 might offer. It was a reasonable directional experiment, but it could not establish the performance of a finished console.

The distinction matters because the laptop and Switch 2 differ in nearly every factor that affects a game:

  • Power budget and cooling: a laptop GPU operates within a different thermal and electrical envelope from a compact handheld console.
  • Memory arrangement: the RTX 2050 test used dedicated 4 GB VRAM, while Switch 2 uses a larger shared console memory pool managed by its operating system and developer tools.
  • CPU pairing: game simulation, streaming, crowd density, and frame-rate consistency depend on the complete platform, not only the GPU.
  • Drivers and APIs: a fixed console platform gives developers a different software target from a Windows laptop with PC drivers.
  • Clock behavior: the chosen 750 MHz proxy clock was an assumption, not a confirmed Switch 2 operating point.

So the original result should not be described as “Switch 2 achieved these benchmark numbers.” The accurate description is: an RTX 2050-based laptop was used as a speculative reference for projected Switch 2 graphics capability.

What the finished Switch 2 hardware actually brings

Nintendo’s published specifications identify Switch 2 as using a custom Nvidia processor. Independent technical reporting based on Digital Foundry analysis and examination of the silicon describes its GPU as an Ampere-derived design with 1,536 CUDA cores. Reported operating clocks are approximately 561 MHz in handheld mode and approximately 1,007 MHz when docked, although the chip is physically capable of higher clocks.

Those figures explain why docked and handheld comparisons should not be treated as interchangeable. Docked mode provides substantially more graphics headroom, while handheld mode has to balance performance, heat, battery life, and the smaller portable form factor.

Switch 2 specification Why it matters for performance
Custom Nvidia processor Provides a console-specific graphics and software platform rather than a laptop GPU dropped into a handheld.
Ampere-derived GPU; approximately 1,536 CUDA cores Places the design in the same broad Nvidia architectural family as mobile RTX 2050 and RTX 3050 products, without making it an RTX 2050 rebrand.
Approximately 561 MHz handheld / 1,007 MHz docked GPU clocks Shows why docked mode can offer considerably more graphics performance than portable mode.
Dedicated RT cores Enables hardware-accelerated ray-tracing features that the base PS4 does not support in an equivalent hardware form.
Dedicated Tensor cores Enables DLSS-style AI-assisted image reconstruction and upscaling.
7.9-inch, 1920 × 1080 HDR display with variable refresh up to 120 Hz Allows a high-refresh handheld output mode, but does not mean demanding games render at 120 frames per second.
TV output up to 3840 × 2160 at 60 Hz Defines the maximum output signal in docked mode, not a guarantee of native 4K rendering.
1920 × 1080 or 2560 × 1440 output up to 120 Hz Provides additional output options for compatible displays, again without guaranteeing a matching game frame rate.
256 GB UFS internal storage Offers more built-in space than the original Switch, but large modern games can still make expansion useful.
microSD Express support up to 2 TB Means buyers should choose the newer Express standard for expanded game storage rather than assuming any ordinary microSD card is equivalent.

Nvidia’s own feature description advertises up to 4K TV-mode gaming and up to 120 frames per second at 1080p in handheld mode. These are capability and output ceilings. They should not be translated into a promise that demanding games render natively at 4K or sustain 120 fps. A game can output a 4K signal after reconstructing a much lower internal image, and a 120 Hz display can show a game that is rendering at a lower or variable frame rate.

How close is Switch 2 to an RTX 2050?

The RTX 2050 comparison remains useful, but only if it is framed at the right level.

Where the comparison is meaningful

Both the mobile RTX 2050 reference and Switch 2 belong to the broader Nvidia Ampere family. Both support hardware ray tracing and AI-assisted upscaling through dedicated RT and Tensor hardware. That makes the RTX 2050 a useful architectural reference for explaining why Switch 2 can run effects and reconstruction techniques unavailable on the base PS4.

It is also reasonable to describe Switch 2 as offering RTX 2050-class graphics capability in some docked workloads, provided “class” is understood as a rough comparison rather than a measured equivalence.

Where the comparison breaks down

CUDA-core counts do not translate directly into equivalent performance against AMD’s Radeon architecture, and they do not even guarantee equivalent performance between two Nvidia products. The laptop RTX 2050 had its own dedicated VRAM, PC drivers, cooling system, CPU, and power limit. Switch 2 uses shared memory, console APIs, fixed hardware, and a power-constrained portable design.

Game performance is further shaped by the engine and the port. A developer can spend available performance on a higher-quality reconstruction, denser geometry, better shadows, more pedestrians, or a steadier frame rate. Two games using the same GPU can make completely different decisions.

For those reasons, these statements are defensible:

  • “The original test used an RTX 2050 laptop as a rough reference for projected Switch 2 capability.”
  • “Switch 2 has an Ampere-derived feature set with RTX-like RT and AI-upscaling capabilities.”
  • “Switch 2 can reach RTX 2050-class behavior in some docked workloads.”

These statements are not defensible:

  • “Switch 2 is exactly as fast as an RTX 2050 laptop.”
  • “The 2023 laptop benchmark proves Switch 2 performance.”
  • “The number of CUDA cores proves that Switch 2 beats a particular AMD GPU.”

Switch 2 versus the base PS4

The relevant console comparison is the original PS4, not the PS4 Pro. Sony’s official base-PS4 specifications list an eight-core AMD Jaguar CPU, a 1.84-teraflop AMD Radeon-based graphics engine, and 8 GB of GDDR5 memory. It was a substantially larger home console built around a roughly 165-watt-class sustained-power design.

Switch 2 is a smaller, portable hybrid system. Its lower-power design means raw sustained throughput is not the only meaningful comparison. The important question is what each platform can deliver in a particular game and at a particular image-quality target.

Area What the comparison supports
Graphics features Switch 2 is clearly more modern. Its dedicated RT and Tensor cores and DLSS support provide capabilities the base PS4’s Radeon hardware does not offer in an equivalent form.
Image clarity Switch 2 can look substantially sharper. DLSS can reconstruct a cleaner output from a lower internal resolution, reducing the need to render every pixel natively.
Textures and assets Switch 2 can sometimes match or exceed PS4-era texture settings. Developers may still reduce texture delivery, shadow quality, animation, environmental detail, or world density elsewhere.
Frame rate There is no universal Switch 2 victory. Ambitious ports commonly target 30 fps and may drop below that in large or busy scenes.
Raw sustained power The result depends on the workload. The PS4’s larger fixed-console power and cooling design can remain advantageous in workloads that do not benefit substantially from DLSS or newer hardware features.
Portability Switch 2 has the decisive practical advantage. It delivers this newer rendering feature set in a handheld hybrid form factor rather than requiring a home-only console.

This is why “more powerful than PS4” is too blunt. Switch 2 is above the base PS4 baseline in feature set and can produce better-looking output in selected games, especially when DLSS is used. It is not categorically faster in every scene, nor does it guarantee higher frame rates in every port.

What real games revealed after launch

Post-launch software is more informative than the 2023 proxy because it shows how developers actually allocate Switch 2’s limited resources.

Cyberpunk 2077: a strong image-quality demonstration with visible compromises

Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition is one of the most useful case studies. CD Projekt Red skipped the original PS4 and Xbox One versions of the Phantom Liberty-era experience, making the Switch 2 version a test of whether a portable system could handle a much more demanding release.

The port includes docked performance and quality modes, handheld modes, and DLSS. Reported docked internal-resolution ranges are approximately 960 × 540 to 1920 × 1080 in performance mode and 1280 × 720 to 1920 × 1080 in quality mode. The output can therefore be much higher than the internal resolution in a given frame; the display signal alone does not tell you what the GPU rendered natively.

Digital Foundry’s analysis reported noticeably improved image clarity compared with the PS4 in relevant comparisons. The game can also use texture settings that reach PS5-like levels in some respects. That is the part of the original projection that aged well: Switch 2’s combination of modern reconstruction and newer graphics features can produce an image that looks more advanced than a conventional PS4 comparison would suggest.

But the port does not simply reproduce every aspect of a more powerful home-console version. Pedestrian and vehicle density are closer to PS4-era settings, and other concessions appear in world detail and effects. The main story generally holds its 30 fps quality target, but the Phantom Liberty expansion can fall to approximately 20–25 fps in complex areas. The 40 fps performance mode is also unstable in demanding outdoor sections.

That makes Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 a compelling hardware example, but not a universal benchmark. It shows both sides of the argument: stronger reconstructed image quality and modern feature support, alongside compromises in simulation density and frame-rate consistency.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: good-looking, but still a 30 fps port

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle provides a second data point. The Switch 2 version was described as looking strong and generally targets 30 fps, but it experiences noticeable drops in larger or busier environments.

This is a useful reminder that visual quality and frame-rate stability are separate questions. A developer may preserve detailed materials, lighting, and geometry in a scene while allowing the frame rate to dip when CPU simulation, streaming, visibility, or effects become unusually demanding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The physical release also illustrates a different limitation: storage media. Texture compromises were reportedly made to fit the game on a 64 GB cartridge. That is not evidence that the GPU cannot render the original textures. It shows that performance capability, install size, cartridge capacity, and asset-compression decisions are separate constraints.

Why DLSS changes the PS4 comparison

A conventional resolution comparison can miss the central Switch 2 advantage. If a PS4 game renders at a fixed lower resolution and Switch 2 renders at a similarly low internal resolution before using DLSS, the two outputs may not look equally sharp. Reconstruction quality, motion handling, temporal stability, and the quality of the source image all matter.

DLSS does not create free performance. The GPU still has to render the scene, and the reconstruction process cannot restore detail that was never captured reliably. It can, however, let developers spend less of their rendering budget on native pixel count and redirect some of that budget toward effects, assets, or a more ambitious game than the base PS4 could comfortably support.

Ray tracing is similarly a feature advantage rather than a guarantee of a better-looking or faster game. Hardware RT makes selected lighting, reflections, or shadow techniques possible at a practical cost, but a developer may choose to omit RT, use it selectively, or reduce another setting to accommodate it.

The practical buying interpretation

If you are considering the Nintendo Switch 2 console, the strongest case is not the claim that it universally beats a base PS4. The case is that it combines a newer Nvidia feature set with handheld play, docked output, and enough performance to run technically ambitious ports that would have been unrealistic for the original Switch.

Buy it expecting:

  • better image reconstruction than a simple native-resolution comparison may suggest;
  • support for modern Nvidia techniques, including DLSS-style upscaling and hardware ray tracing;
  • some games with quality and performance modes;
  • many demanding releases targeting 30 fps rather than 60 fps;
  • visible, game-specific compromises in crowds, traffic, shadows, effects, texture delivery, or environmental detail;
  • different results in handheld and docked modes.

Do not buy it expecting every game to match a high-end home console, render natively at 4K, or sustain 120 fps simply because the hardware supports those output formats.

Final verdict: more than a PS4 wannabe, but not a universal PS4 killer

The original RTX 2050 projection deserves credit for identifying the direction of Nintendo’s next hardware generation. It anticipated that Switch 2 would use Nvidia technology capable of hardware ray tracing and AI-assisted reconstruction, and that those features could produce image quality beyond what a simplistic PS4-era comparison would imply.

It did not validate a benchmark result. The Dell Vostro test was a speculative proxy based on a downclocked 4 GB mobile RTX 2050, not an independent measurement of the eventual console.

Post-launch evidence supports a nuanced conclusion. Switch 2 is more advanced than the base PS4 in graphics features and can deliver better-looking output in selected games. Cyberpunk 2077 demonstrates how DLSS and modern texture settings can work together, while its frame-rate drops and reduced density show the cost of fitting a demanding game into a portable power envelope. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle reinforces the pattern: strong presentation, a 30 fps target, and drops in busy scenes.

The fairest verdict is that Switch 2 is above the PS4 baseline in features and selected visual outcomes, but not categorically ahead in every rendering workload. The “PS4 wannabe” label was a useful 2023 provocation. In light of real software, it is no longer a sufficient description of what Nintendo’s hybrid hardware can do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the original RTX 2050 test benchmark the Nintendo Switch 2?

No. It tested a Dell Vostro laptop with an Intel Core i7-1360P and a 4 GB mobile RTX 2050 downclocked to 750 MHz. The laptop was used as a speculative proxy for projected Switch 2 performance, not as a substitute for confirmed Nintendo hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is Switch 2 more powerful than the base PS4?

The answer depends on the workload. Switch 2 is clearly more modern in features because it supports hardware ray tracing and DLSS-style reconstruction, and it can produce sharper output in some games. However, demanding ports can still target 30 fps, reduce world density, or drop below their target, so it is not universally faster in every rendering task.

Can Switch 2 really play games at 4K or 120 fps?

Those are supported output ceilings, not universal rendering guarantees. Switch 2 can output up to 4K at 60 Hz to a TV and supports up to 120 Hz at compatible resolutions, but demanding games may render internally at a lower resolution, use DLSS, target 30 fps, or vary their frame rate.

Why is the RTX 2050 comparison imperfect?

A laptop RTX 2050 has a different power budget, cooling system, CPU, driver stack, and dedicated VRAM arrangement. Switch 2 uses a fixed console platform, shared memory, different software tools, and separate handheld and docked clock targets. Similar Nvidia architecture does not mean identical game performance.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: the RTX 2050 projection was a successful directional forecast, not a validated Switch 2 benchmark. Switch 2’s DLSS-enabled image quality and dedicated RT/Tensor hardware make it more than a portable PS4 in practical terms, but real games show that modern features do not eliminate the compromises imposed by a compact hybrid console.
