That makes Switch 2 the less expensive purchase at checkout, but not automatically the cheaper system to own. Your total depends on the games you plan to buy, physical or digital format, any membership you need, and whether a bundle includes things you would have bought anyway.
How much do the consoles cost in the U.S.?
The prices below distinguish official recommended prices from a retailer’s displayed listing. Nintendo’s Switch 2 U.S. MSRP rose to $499.99 on September 1, 2026. Sony’s U.S. recommended retail prices took effect April 2, 2026. PlayStation Direct displayed prices one dollar below Sony’s recommendations when its page was checked October 4, 2026.

At the manufacturer-price level, Switch 2 costs $100 less than PS5 Digital Edition and $150 less than the standard PS5. Those differences compare console prices only, before tax, games, memberships, or accessories. The figures are U.S.-specific: Nintendo’s May 2026 announcement listed different regional pricing, including Canada at C$679.99 excluding tax and Europe at €499.99 including tax, with those prices effective September 1, 2026. Check Nintendo’s regional announcement rather than applying U.S. prices elsewhere.
Does the Switch 2 Mario Kart World bundle save money?
Nintendo announced a U.S. Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle for $549.99, containing the console, a full download of Mario Kart World, and a 90-day Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership. That stated saving is meaningful only if you want the game and membership. If you would not otherwise buy one or both, their suggested prices do not represent money you would actually spend. Compare the bundle with the cost of the exact console, game, and membership you intend to purchase, and check availability at the retailer you plan to use.
What changes the real cost after buying the console?
The games you actually want
There is no useful universal claim that one platform’s games are cheaper: the total depends on the specific titles, their current prices, and whether you buy them physically or digitally. Make a short list of games you expect to play in the first year and compare those titles in the formats available to you.
For Switch 2, Nintendo says new Nintendo-published digital games exclusive to the system can have a different MSRP from their physical editions beginning in May 2026. Retail partners set their own prices, which can vary. Nintendo explains Switch 2 game pricing. Check the actual listing for each game instead of assuming physical and digital copies cost the same.

Physical discs versus digital libraries
Your preferred format affects which console model makes sense and where you can shop for games. The standard PS5 listed above is disc-equipped; PS5 Digital Edition is digital-only. If you value disc purchases, compare the upfront model price with the physical game prices available to you. If you prefer digital libraries, compare digital prices instead. The lower initial price of a digital-only console is not by itself proof of a lower total cost.
Online membership
Nintendo’s U.S. support table lists Nintendo Switch Online Individual at $19.99 for 12 months. It also lists Individual + Expansion Pack at $49.99 per year, Family at $34.99 per year, and Family + Expansion Pack at $79.99 per year. Add a membership only if you need it for the games you intend to play online or want its other features. A current comparable PlayStation Plus price and the online-play requirements for particular games are not established here, so these Nintendo figures alone cannot show which console has the cheaper online option. Verify Sony’s current plan prices and each game’s requirements before including a subscription in your comparison.

How to compare the cost for your first year
- Choose the exact console. Compare Switch 2 with PS5 Digital Edition or the disc-equipped PS5; include PS5 Pro only if it is a model you are considering.
- List the games you expect to buy. Use the same titles and time period for both systems. Compare the current physical or digital prices that match your buying preference.
- Add only memberships you will use. Include online service costs if a game or feature you want makes a membership worthwhile. Do not assume every game requires one.
- Value bundle contents realistically. Count a bundled game or membership at its full separate price only if you would otherwise buy it.
- Use current local totals. Add applicable tax and retailer prices for your location, and compare the same period, such as the first 12 months. Manufacturer prices and retailer listings can change.
Which console is better for your budget?
Choose Switch 2 if minimizing the initial U.S. console outlay is the priority, or if its particular games and portable play fit what you want. Choose a PS5 model if the PlayStation games you intend to play make that system the better use of your budget; select between Digital Edition and the disc-equipped model based on your format preference and prices for the games you plan to buy. Neither portability nor a lower console MSRP establishes lower lifetime spending on its own.
The most reliable decision is a personal basket, not a universal ownership-cost estimate: console plus the games you want, any membership you need, and tax. Prices and availability can change, so recheck the exact listings before purchase.
