Nintendo promised to announce the successor to Nintendo Switch within its fiscal year ending March 31, 2025—not to release the console by that date. The company revealed the system as Nintendo Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, and later confirmed its release for June 5, 2025.
What did Nintendo promise by March 2025?
At its May 2024 financial-results briefing, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said the company would make an announcement about the “successor to Nintendo Switch” within the fiscal year. Nintendo’s fiscal year ended March 31, 2025. The commitment was therefore an announcement deadline, not a promise that the new console would be available by March.

Furukawa said Nintendo could not yet share more about the successor and would release information in stages as its launch approached. In Nintendo’s English-language investor-relations Q&A, identified as a translation of the Japanese original, he explained: “For today’s announcement, we determined that the most appropriate expression to use was ‘successor to Nintendo Switch.’” Nintendo’s May 2024 Q&A records the statement.

The initial January reveal and April presentation were separate steps: January established the name and form factor, while Nintendo scheduled more detailed information for an April 2 Nintendo Direct. The company met its announcement commitment before the fiscal year ended. Its January 16 announcement said the console would arrive in 2025; the April 2 release announcement set the specific date.

What did Nintendo say about Switch game compatibility?
In November 2024, Nintendo said Nintendo Switch software would be playable on the successor, while noting that it would provide further details later. The January 2025 announcement clarified the scope: Switch 2 would play Nintendo Switch 2-exclusive games as well as physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some Switch titles might not be supported or fully compatible. Compatibility should not be read as a guarantee for every game.
Nintendo’s November briefing is available in its November 2024 investor-relations materials; the January announcement gives the later qualification.

Was the 13.5 million figure a Switch 2 forecast?
No. The 13.5 million figure discussed in Nintendo’s May 2024 briefing was the company’s forecast for sales of the existing Nintendo Switch hardware during the fiscal year ending March 2025. It was not a Switch 2 shipment or launch forecast. Nintendo’s briefing also noted that the previous fiscal year’s Switch hardware sales had reached 15.7 million units against an initial forecast of 15 million; those, too, were figures for the existing console.
