Nintendo Switch 2 launched on June 5, 2025, following its reveal on January 16. Nintendo’s announced US launch prices were $449.99 for the console and $499.99 for a bundle with Mario Kart World; those are historical suggested retail prices, not current quotes. The main upgrade is a larger, higher-resolution screen and more capable docked output, but original Switch game and accessory compatibility is not universal—check Nintendo’s current list before buying or upgrading.

When did Nintendo reveal Switch 2, and when did it launch?

Nintendo announced Switch 2 on January 16, 2025, describing it as the successor to Nintendo Switch and saying it would arrive in 2025. The company set the release date for June 5, 2025. The announcement established that the console would play Switch 2 games as well as physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, while cautioning that some original Switch software might not be supported or fully compatible. Nintendo’s January 2025 announcement and its US launch announcement document the timeline.

What were the US launch prices?

Nintendo of America announced these US suggested retail prices for the June 2025 launch. They are launch figures, not current prices; check local retailers for current price and availability in your region.

Launch option US announced launch MSRP What was included
Nintendo Switch 2 console $449.99 Console
Nintendo Switch 2 + Mario Kart World bundle $499.99 Console and Mario Kart World

These prices are specific to Nintendo of America’s US announcement; Nintendo also announced different Japan-only configurations and yen prices. The figures should not be treated as global pricing.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps

What changed in the hardware?

Nintendo’s launch announcement lists a 7.9-inch built-in LCD screen with 1080p resolution and 256 GB of internal storage. It also describes magnetic Joy-Con 2 controllers, a larger adjustable stand, and an additional USB-C port on the top of the system. These are Nintendo-announced specifications, not independent performance measurements.

Screen and docked output

The built-in display is an LCD, not an OLED. When docked, Switch 2 can output up to 4K in compatible games when used with a compatible display. That is a conditional maximum: it does not mean every game renders at 4K or that every display setup supports it.

Joy-Con 2 and mouse controls

Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically and can function as mouse controls in compatible games. The feature depends on game support; it is not a system-wide replacement for conventional controller input.

GameChat and GameShare

Nintendo introduced GameChat for online communication and GameShare for sharing supported games. Availability and use depend on applicable account, internet, membership, country, camera, game, and terms requirements. Nintendo’s US launch announcement said GameChat would be available without a Nintendo Switch Online membership through the end of March 2026, with a membership required afterward. Since that date has passed, check Nintendo’s current GameChat feature information for the terms that apply now.

Do original Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2?

Many compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games work on Switch 2, but Nintendo does not promise that every title will work or work fully. Some games have free updates or paid upgrades, and compatibility can vary by title. Before deciding whether to upgrade, search the specific game in Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility list. A general statement that Switch 2 is backward compatible is not enough to confirm that a particular game, feature, or accessory will behave as expected.

Which original Switch accessories carry over?

Compatibility is mixed, so verify each accessory rather than assuming that it transfers with the game library.

What should original Switch owners check before upgrading?

Compare the features you would use with the practical cost of moving your setup. Switch 2 adds a larger 1080p screen, more internal storage, magnetic controllers with mouse functionality in supported games, and conditional 4K docked output. The value of those changes depends on your games, display, and play habits—not just the headline specifications.

  1. Check your games: Look up every essential title in Nintendo’s compatibility list, and note any listed limitations, updates, or paid upgrades.
  2. Check your accessories: Confirm each controller and accessory individually. Plan around the incompatible original dock, and remember that original Joy-Con require a separate charging solution if used with Switch 2.
  3. Check storage needs: If you need removable storage for games, verify that the card is microSD Express rather than a conventional microSD card.
  4. Check the current local price: Compare current offers in your region instead of using the historical US launch MSRP as a live quote. If considering the bundle, account for whether you would otherwise buy Mario Kart World separately.
  5. Check online feature terms: Review current membership, account, regional, and title requirements for GameChat, GameShare, and other online functions.

Can you keep your Nintendo Account and digital games?

Nintendo says Nintendo Accounts and Nintendo Switch Online memberships can be used on Switch 2. Its support guidance also describes virtual game cards for managing compatible digital games, along with GameShare for supported titles. GameShare has directional limits when an original Switch receives a shared game from Switch 2, so check Nintendo’s current instructions for the intended game and device combination before relying on that feature.

What Nintendo’s later figures say about the platform

Nintendo reported that Pokémon Pokopia exceeded 4 million global cumulative sell-through in its first five weeks after its March 5, 2026 release. This is a Nintendo-reported figure, not an independently verified sales count. In a February 2026 investor presentation, Nintendo also reported that the original Switch user base had exceeded 100 million people; that figure refers to the original Switch, not Switch 2. These figures offer context for the platform transition, but do not establish current Switch 2 sales or performance.
