Short answer: Nintendo’s Zelda 40th Anniversary product is a slim carrying case with a screen protector, not an ergonomic grip. An installed grip case, such as the Genki Attack Vector, stays on the console for more comfortable handheld play but adds width and depth. Nintendo’s case is designed around an unmodified Switch 2 with Joy-Con 2 attached, so a substantial grip may not fit. A thin shell might, but you should verify the grip maker’s case-compatibility statement and measure the assembled console before buying.
What you are actually comparing
The two products solve different problems. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 Carrying Case & Screen Protector – The Legend of Zelda – 40th Anniversary Edition is a travel enclosure. Nintendo describes it as a carrying case with decorative Zelda artwork and a screen protector, with a listed release date of October 29, 2026 and an MSRP of 3,980 yen including tax. It is intended to hold the console safely in a bag when you are not playing.

A grip case is an installed shell. It surrounds the Switch 2 and often the Joy-Con 2 controllers while you play, adding handles or contoured sides for a less cramped handheld posture. The Genki Attack Vector reviewed by TechRadar uses separate covers for the console and Joy-Con 2, a rubber interior patch for a snug fit, and openings that leave the stand, ports and buttons accessible. It remains on the system instead of being taken on and off for every trip.
That distinction drives every other difference: the Nintendo case is primarily for transport and screen protection, while the grip is primarily for comfort and protection during use. Neither is a universal replacement for the other.

Will a grip case fit inside Nintendo’s official Zelda case?
Do not treat the combination as guaranteed. Nintendo’s technical specifications put the Switch 2 at approximately 4.5 inches tall, 10.7 inches wide and 0.55 inches thick with Joy-Con 2 attached. The maximum thickness rises to about 1.2 inches around the control-stick tips and the ZL/ZR triggers. Those figures describe the console and attached controllers without a third-party shell.
Nintendo’s carrying-case instructions also tell you to store the system with the Joy-Con 2 attached. Nintendo Life reported that the official case has a snug fit and is smaller than the Genki Sleeper Case, specifically because Nintendo is not expecting an additional case such as Genki Attack Vector to be installed. In practice, a thin protective skin or very slim shell has a chance; a full ergonomic grip with pronounced handles is much more likely to press against the case walls or fail to close.
The case’s external measurement of 340 × 142 × 42 mm (13.4 × 5.6 × 1.7 inches), reported by TechRadar in 2025, should not be read as usable internal clearance. Padding, a shaped interior and the zipper reduce the space available to the console. A grip can also add bulk at the sticks, triggers and side rails even when its central back is thin.
Measure the assembled console, not the bare Switch 2
- Attach both Joy-Con 2 controllers and install the grip exactly as you would use it.
- Measure the greatest width, height and depth, including handles, stick guards and any raised ZL/ZR protection. Record the largest value rather than the shell’s advertised central thickness.
- Ask the grip manufacturer whether the product is listed as compatible with the official Nintendo carrying case. “Fits Switch 2” only confirms console compatibility; it does not confirm compatibility with a particular case.
- Compare those measurements with the travel case’s internal dimensions, if the manufacturer publishes them. External dimensions alone cannot prove a fit.
- Confirm that the case can close without force and that the zipper does not ride over a stick, trigger or corner. A case that closes under pressure can bend controls or compress the shell over time.
If the seller does not provide internal measurements or a compatibility statement, regard the pairing as unverified. Buy from a source with a practical return policy rather than assuming that a Zelda theme means the products were designed as a set.

Protection: enclosure versus always-on coverage
What the official case protects
The Zelda case separates the console from other objects in a backpack and includes a screen protector. Its protection is therefore concentrated on travel: it helps prevent scratches, screen contact and ordinary bumps while the Switch 2 is inside the closed enclosure. The case also keeps the attached Joy-Con 2 controllers together, reducing the chance of loose accessories rubbing against the display.
Nintendo’s cited product information and manual do not publish a drop-test result, impact standard or guaranteed protection level. You should not assign it a numeric durability rating based on the artwork, zipper or shell appearance. It is a slim carrying case, not a certified rugged container.
What a grip shell protects
A grip shell covers parts of the console and controllers while they are exposed during play. The Attack Vector review describes a rubber interior patch that helps hold the shell in place and cut-outs for the stand, ports and buttons. TechRadar characterizes its coverage as sufficient for scratches and everyday handling, but reports no standardized drop-test score.
Because a grip remains attached, it can reduce contact between the console’s back and a desk or your hands. It does not enclose the screen, sticks or triggers in the way a closed travel case does, and it cannot replace a screen protector or a bag enclosure. Openings required for ventilation, controls and ports are also areas where coverage is intentionally absent.

Which one protects better?
There is no evidence-based single winner. The Nintendo case offers the more complete barrier when the Switch 2 is packed away; the grip offers continuous shell coverage and a more secure-feeling hold while you play. If your main risk is a console sliding against keys in a backpack, the travel case matters more. If you frequently play handheld and want protection without removing a shell, the grip addresses that use case.
Portability, dimensions and storage
TechRadar’s 2025 report measured the official case at 13.4 × 5.6 × 1.7 inches (340 × 142 × 42 mm). It stores the Switch 2 with Joy-Con 2 attached, six game cartridges and small accessories such as Joy-Con straps. Its slim profile is intended to slip inside another bag rather than replace a backpack or hard equipment case.
A grip shell increases the handheld footprint every time it is installed. Even a shell that is thin through the center can be wider at the handles and deeper around the triggers. That extra bulk improves comfort but makes a slim sleeve or tightly molded travel case less likely to fit. You may also need to remove the grip to use a dock or another accessory; dock compatibility is not established by the cited sources, so check the grip’s own instructions.

A roomier Zelda-themed travel alternative
PowerA’s Zelda-themed Hyrule Crest protection case is listed at 11.85 × 6.85 × 2.09 inches (30.1 × 17.4 × 5.3 cm). Its greater external depth makes it a more plausible candidate for carrying accessories or a bulkier setup than Nintendo’s slim case. However, the cited listing does not promise compatibility with every installed grip. Measure the interior and confirm the return terms before treating it as a grip solution.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Its dimensions also illustrate why “smaller” is not always “better.” Nintendo’s case is narrower and slimmer for everyday carry, while a deeper case can provide more tolerance for accessories. The right choice depends on whether your priority is fitting the case inside another bag or carrying a larger assembled system in one dedicated enclosure.
Keeping the Zelda design visible while using a grip
The official case displays its Zelda artwork when the console is not being used, but it cannot show that design while the Switch 2 is in your hands because the console is inside the enclosure. An installed grip leaves the console exposed during play, so a Zelda-themed grip or a transparent shell can keep the console’s appearance visible.
That approach involves a compromise. A clear or thin shell may preserve the look and have a better chance of fitting the official case, but it will not provide the same handle size as a full ergonomic grip. A substantial Zelda grip can deliver the most comfortable handheld shape while making the slim Nintendo case impractical. If you want both an always-visible design and a travel enclosure, choose the grip first, then select a case explicitly advertised for its installed dimensions.

Practical setups that make sense
Unmodified console plus official case
This is the least complicated arrangement and the one most closely aligned with Nintendo’s instructions. Attach the Joy-Con 2, apply the included screen protector carefully, and store the system in the molded compartment. You get the smallest documented Nintendo travel setup, space for six cartridges and room for small items without introducing a fit question.

Grip for play plus a larger travel case
Use the grip whenever handheld comfort matters and pack the assembled system in a case whose interior is specified for that grip. This avoids repeatedly snapping the shell on and off and gives the travel case room to clear handles and controls. It costs more and takes up more bag space than the official slim case, but it is the most reliable route for a large ergonomic shell.
Grip for play plus the official case only when verified
This can work with a genuinely thin shell, but treat it as a measurement exercise rather than a promised feature. Test the complete setup before committing to travel. If the zipper catches, the lid bows, or the console shifts because the padding is compressed, use a roomier case instead of forcing the pairing.
Common fit and handling mistakes
- Confusing a carrying case with a grip: the official Zelda product does not add handles or change the handheld shape.
- Comparing only central thickness: sticks, ZL/ZR triggers and side handles can be the highest or widest points.
- Assuming a Switch 2 shell is case-compatible: console fit and travel-case fit are separate specifications.
- Using external case dimensions as interior clearance: padding and the molded compartment reduce usable space.
- Expecting a drop-test guarantee: neither cited product description publishes a standardized drop rating.
- Forcing a tight zipper: pressure on analog sticks or triggers can cause control damage even if the lid eventually closes.
- Ignoring accessory placement: cartridges, straps and charging cables can occupy the space a grip needs.
Bottom line for this comparison
Choose the official Nintendo Zelda case when your priority is a slim, Zelda-branded travel enclosure with a screen protector, six game-card storage and a snug compartment for the Switch 2 with Joy-Con 2 attached. Choose an installed grip when handheld comfort and always-on shell coverage matter more than the smallest packed footprint. Do not assume the two can be combined: Nintendo’s case is documented as snug around the unmodified console, and a full grip commonly adds enough bulk to defeat that fit. For a combined setup, verify the exact measurements and compatibility statement, or select a roomier third-party travel case designed for the grip.
