For a Switch you take out of the house, buy a carrying case and a screen protector sized for your exact console first. Add a microSD card only when you need more space; consider a Pro Controller or stand for the way you play. Check whether you have a standard Nintendo Switch, Switch – OLED Model, Switch Lite, or Switch 2 before ordering: accessories do not all fit or work across models.
Start by identifying your Switch model
Check the console itself or its packaging before buying. A case must fit the system’s shape, and screen protectors are not universal. Nintendo lists the screen as 6.2 inches on the standard Switch, 7.0 inches on the OLED Model, and 5.5 inches on Switch Lite; these are Nintendo’s published specifications, verified in 2026.
Switch 2 is a different generation. Some accessories may overlap, but compatibility is item-specific: confirm the individual product lists your console rather than assuming an accessory for an older Switch will work.
What to buy first, by use
1. A case and screen protector for portable use
If your console travels, a protective case and a correctly sized screen protector are the most broadly useful first purchases. Choose a case that fits your exact model and any grip or other accessory you plan to leave attached. Check the protector’s packaging or listing for explicit support for standard Switch, OLED, or Lite.

Nintendo’s official case-and-protector bundle listing describes protectors for the standard Switch and OLED Model, not Switch Lite; the console is not included. Do not treat that bundle as a Lite protector. Nintendo says only officially licensed products have been evaluated by Nintendo for compatibility and quality. For third-party accessories, look for the licensed-product seal and the supported systems stated on the packaging.
2. A microSD card only when you need more storage
Extra storage is optional. If your original Switch, OLED, or Lite is running short of space, Nintendo says storage can be expanded with microSD cards, including microSDXC cards up to 2TB. The figure is Nintendo’s stated maximum, verified in 2026; check the card’s compatibility and your console’s instructions before purchase.

Do not carry that recommendation over to Switch 2 game storage. Nintendo specifies microSD Express for Switch 2 game storage. Conventional Switch microSD cards are not compatible for that purpose; Nintendo says they can be used on Switch 2 only to view captured screenshots and videos.
3. A Pro Controller for a different grip or another player
A Pro Controller is a preference or multiplayer upgrade, not a requirement. Nintendo lists it as compatible with standard Switch, OLED, and Lite. On Lite, it connects wirelessly for supported games, but it does not give the console TV mode. Check the particular game’s controller and play-mode support before buying for a specific use.

4. A stand if you want to play Switch Lite on a tabletop
Switch Lite has no built-in stand. Nintendo identifies its Adjustable Charging Stand or a licensed accessory stand as options for tabletop play. A wireless Joy-Con or Pro Controller can be useful in games that support tabletop play. If you use Lite only in handheld mode, you do not need a stand.
5. Replacement or duplicate gear for a specific reason
Before buying charging or TV accessories, check what came with your console. Nintendo lists the original Switch package contents as a dock, two Joy-Con controllers, wrist straps, a Joy-Con grip, AC adapter, and HDMI cable. A spare can make sense for a second TV location or to replace lost or damaged gear; it is not automatically a first purchase.

Switch Lite does not support TV mode, so buying a dock to send its picture to a TV is not useful. For charging accessories or other extras, verify both the precise model compatibility and whether you already own the needed item.

- Switch – OLED Model: 7.0-inch screen; supports TV mode; conventional microSD/microSDXC storage applies.
- Switch Lite: 5.5-inch screen; no TV mode or built-in stand; supports microSD storage and compatible wireless controllers.
- Switch 2: uses microSD Express for game storage; verify each older accessory individually.
These screen sizes and the storage and play-mode distinctions come from Nintendo’s published specifications and support guidance, verified in 2026. When comparing products, check model fit, intended use, what is already in your console package, and licensed status. Compatibility alone does not establish that one brand is more durable, comfortable, fast, or better value than another.
