If your Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch OLED has a blank built-in screen, undock it, unplug the AC adapter from both ends for 30 seconds, hold the console’s POWER button for 20 seconds, reconnect the adapter, and press POWER once. If it still will not display an image, follow the checks below; persistent faults need Nintendo service.
Restart the console and adapter
- Remove the console from the dock so you can check its built-in screen.
- Unplug the AC adapter from the wall outlet and the console. Leave it unplugged for 30 seconds; Nintendo says this resets the adapter.
- On the console, hold POWER for 20 seconds, then release it. This forces a shutdown; it is not a factory reset.
- Connect the adapter directly to a wall outlet and the console, then press POWER once.
Nintendo says Switch systems do not have a power light, so the absence of one does not tell you whether the console is receiving power. Nintendo’s blank-screen and power troubleshooting steps.
Give a nearly empty battery time to charge
If the battery is almost depleted, the screen may remain off while a charging indicator appears briefly in the upper-left corner. Leave the console connected to the adapter for at least 15 to 30 minutes, then press POWER once. Nintendo gives that charging interval for a system with a nearly depleted battery; it is not a guaranteed time to resolve every blank-screen fault.
Check the AC adapter and charging connection
Use the Nintendo Switch AC adapter, model HAC-002. Check the cable and connectors for fraying, splits, looseness, or kinks, and confirm the adapter is an appropriate licensed accessory. Nintendo notes that damaged or nonlicensed adapters may have compatibility problems. Replace the adapter only if yours is damaged or is not the correct licensed model.

If no charging indicator appears, Nintendo suggests testing the adapter with another Nintendo USB-C product, if available, inspecting the console’s USB-C connector, and trying another adapter. Do not force a plug into the port. Visible connector damage or a screen that remains blank after these checks calls for service, not an attempted internal repair.
If the built-in screen works but the TV stays blank
A console that displays normally in handheld mode has a TV-output problem, which is different from a blank built-in screen. Switch Lite does not support TV Mode, so these dock and TV checks do not apply to it. For other Switch models, Nintendo’s no-image-on-TV guidance recommends checking the connection path:

- Connect the Nintendo AC adapter to a wall outlet and the dock, and connect the dock directly to the TV with an HDMI cable. Temporarily remove intermediary devices.
- Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the dock. Try another HDMI port and, if available, another HDMI cable or TV.
- Test with another dock if one is available. If the console works with another dock, Nintendo says the original dock needs service. If the picture problem persists, Nintendo says the console and dock need service.
When to request service
Request Nintendo service if the built-in display stays blank after the restart and charging checks, the USB-C connector appears damaged, or the TV-output fault persists after the relevant cable, input, TV, and dock checks. A blank screen alone does not identify which internal component has failed; avoid opening the console or attempting a screen or board repair based on this symptom.
