Should you replace the controller or troubleshoot first?
Nintendo UK recommends working through basic checks before sending an affected Joy-Con for repair. Use this sequence if the problem is on a Joy-Con rather than a third-party controller:
- Update the Nintendo Switch system software and the controller software.
- Remove any Joy-Con skins or covers that could interfere with the sticks.
- Calibrate the control sticks in the console settings and check whether the response improves.
- If the problem appears in only one game, check that game for updates and review its manual or settings for options such as tilt controls.
- If calibration fails or the stick still responds incorrectly, follow Nintendo’s repair instructions for the affected Joy-Con.
Nintendo’s UK support page for incorrectly responding Joy-Con sticks says no-charge repairs for responsiveness syndrome are offered in the EEA, UK and Switzerland until further notice, including outside the 24-month manufacturer warranty.
