Your Nintendo Switch eShop storefront is determined by the country/region on the Nintendo Account linked to the Switch user who opens eShop. To use another market, change that account’s country/region, then use the same account for purchases and redemptions. The account region also determines which digital catalog and region-issued prepaid codes are available. Keep the game’s sales region, its DLC region, and the gift card’s issuing market aligned: Nintendo warns that cross-region combinations may not work, and digital purchases and added balance are generally final.
What the Nintendo Switch eShop country setting controls
A Nintendo Switch console does not have one permanent eShop country shared by every user. The storefront is tied to the Nintendo Account connected to the particular Switch user who launches eShop. Nintendo lists both a Nintendo Account and a linked Switch user as requirements for eShop features.

That country/region setting determines the market whose storefront the account can use. It affects the games, downloadable content, demos, subscriptions and other digital products displayed, as well as which prepaid or download codes the account can redeem. A Nintendo Support example for Hong Kong tells users to set their Nintendo Account country/region to Hong Kong before using that eShop.
Changing the console’s physical location, system language or time zone does not substitute for changing the Nintendo Account country/region. The account setting is the controlling value.

One console can show different markets
Because the setting belongs to the account, two users on the same Switch can be associated with different Nintendo Accounts and therefore use different account settings. Their balances are not pooled. Opening eShop with the wrong user is a common reason a shopper sees an unexpected catalog or cannot redeem a code.
How to change your Nintendo Account country or region
Use the Nintendo Account settings for the account that is linked to the Switch user. The exact wording of menus can vary by web or mobile layout, but the relevant field is labelled Country/region in the account information area.
- Check the account first. Identify the Nintendo Account email address connected to the Switch user who will shop. On the Nintendo Account website, open the account information or profile settings and note the current country/region.
- Select the target market. Edit the
Country/regionfield and choose the country or region whose eShop you intend to use, such as Japan or Hong Kong. Save the change. - Use the matching Switch user. On the console, open Nintendo eShop with the Switch user linked to that same Nintendo Account. A different user will still use that user’s own linked account.
- Review account information before paying. In eShop, open
Account Informationand verify the displayed balance and payment controls. Nintendo identifies this area as the place to manage balance, payment cards, PayPal, Nintendo Switch Online settings and other purchase controls. - Confirm the market on every code. Before entering a prepaid or download code, check the country or region printed for the code. Redeem only a code issued for the account’s current country/region.
If the storefront still looks unchanged, close eShop and open it again using the linked user after the account change. Do not create a second purchase accidentally while checking; first verify the account name and country/region shown in Account Information.
What the change does not do
- It does not merge two Nintendo Accounts.
- It does not move purchase history from one account to another.
- It does not make DLC from one sales market compatible with a game sold in another market.
- It does not make a prepaid card valid outside the country or region for which it was issued.
Can you access another country’s eShop?
Yes, the documented mechanism is to set the Nintendo Account country/region to the relevant market and open eShop with the linked Switch user. Access is therefore an account-setting decision, not a console-region switch.

Whether doing so is useful depends on four practical questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Decision area | What the account region determines | What to verify before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Catalog availability | The digital games, DLC, demos and subscriptions offered by that market | That the title and edition you want are listed in the selected eShop |
| Payment and redemption | Which market-issued prepaid or download products the account can redeem | That your payment method or code is accepted for the account’s country/region |
| Compatibility | The sales market associated with software and add-on content | That the game and every add-on come from the same sales country |
| Account continuity | Where balance, purchase history and subscriptions remain attached | That you are using the intended Nintendo Account, not another Switch user |
| Consumer risk | The consequences of an unusable cross-region purchase | That you accept Nintendo’s documented no-refund position for added balance and purchases |
A different catalog can be useful when a release, demo or add-on is offered in one market but not another. It also creates extra responsibility: every code and add-on must be checked against the account and game’s market before confirmation.
DLC and game-region compatibility
Nintendo’s clearest warning concerns downloadable content. The game and its add-on content should be sold for the same country or region. Software and additional content sold in different countries may not work together.
The overseas-game example
Nintendo gives a specific example involving Splatoon 2: an overseas version of the game may not work with Splatoon 2 additional content purchased from the Japanese Nintendo eShop. The fact that both products have the same title does not guarantee compatibility; their sales markets must also match.
Hong Kong guidance
Nintendo’s Hong Kong support describes Hong Kong-market software paired with Hong Kong eShop add-on content as the tested combination. Cross-region combinations are unconfirmed and unsupported. “Unconfirmed” is not a promise that a particular combination will fail; it means Nintendo does not establish that it will work, so you assume the risk.

Before purchasing an add-on
- Check the physical game packaging, cartridge listing or digital product information for its sales market.
- Open the eShop associated with the Nintendo Account and confirm that the add-on is offered for that same market.
- Read the add-on’s product description for edition or software requirements.
- Only then confirm the purchase or enter a code.
If a cross-region purchase cannot be used, Nintendo states that it does not accept returns or refunds for that situation. There is no safe assumption that a region change will repair an incompatible game-and-DLC pairing.

Can a Nintendo eShop card from another country be redeemed?
The practical rule is simple: buy a prepaid or download card issued for the same country/region as the Nintendo Account. Nintendo says Japanese download and prepaid card numbers require the Nintendo Account country/region to be Japan. A Japanese code therefore belongs on a Japan-region account, not merely on a Switch being used in Japan.
Code-purchase checklist
- Read the card or retailer listing for the issuing country or region.
- Compare that market with the country/region shown in Nintendo Account settings.
- Open eShop with the linked user for that account.
- Enter the code only after confirming the match.
- Keep the receipt and code details until the balance appears in Account Information.
A card from another market can leave you with a code that cannot be redeemed. Changing the account region solely to attempt a redemption also affects the storefront and payment context for that account, so decide on the target market before buying the code.
What happens to your balance when you change regions?
Your balance belongs to the Nintendo Account, not to the physical Switch and not to all users on the console. Nintendo also says the same account can carry its balance to another console when that account is linked there.
Balances from different Nintendo Accounts cannot be combined. If one family member has funds on one account and another family member has funds on a second account, changing which user opens eShop does not create a shared wallet.
Purchase history and ownership
Digital purchase history remains with the Nintendo Account that made the purchase. Nintendo says purchase history cannot be moved between accounts. A region change should therefore be treated as a change to the shopping market for the same account, not as a way to transfer games to another account.
Refund and final-sale risk
Nintendo documents that added balance and digital purchases are non-refundable. It also says it does not accept returns or refunds when software and additional content cannot be used together because they were bought for different countries. Check the market before adding funds or confirming a download.

Payment methods and account information
The eShop’s Account Information area is the control point for balance, payment cards, PayPal, Nintendo Switch Online settings and related purchase controls. Review it after changing country/region and before starting a transaction.

Keep three elements aligned:
- Account region: the country/region selected in Nintendo Account settings.
- Payment or redemption source: a card, PayPal account or prepaid code accepted for that market.
- Software market: the country in which the game and any add-on were sold.
Nintendo’s published information does not establish that every payment method is accepted in every market, so do not infer acceptance from the fact that a card works in your home eShop. Verify the payment option presented for the selected account and market before submitting the order.
A safe workflow for cross-region shopping
Use this sequence whenever you plan to buy from a different Nintendo eShop:
- Decide which market you need. Identify the specific game, DLC, demo or subscription and the country/region in which it is sold.
- Check the Nintendo Account. Confirm the account linked to the intended Switch user and record its current country/region.
- Change the setting before buying a code. If the target market differs, update the account country/region first.
- Open the correct storefront. Launch eShop with that linked user and verify the market shown in Account Information.
- Match the game and DLC. Treat the game’s sales country and the add-on’s eShop country as a required pair.
- Match the payment or card. Use a payment method or prepaid/download code issued for the account’s country/region. Japanese codes, for example, require Japan.
- Review the final screen. Check the title, edition, add-on, account and balance before confirming.
- Keep the account unchanged for follow-up content. If you later buy an expansion or in-game add-on, use the same market as the original game.
Troubleshooting common region problems
The eShop shows the wrong country
Close eShop and identify which Switch user launched it. Recheck the Nintendo Account linked to that user and its country/region setting. Opening eShop under another user can display a different account’s market.
A prepaid code will not redeem
Stop entering codes and compare the code’s issuing country with the Nintendo Account country/region. Nintendo’s rule for Japanese prepaid and download codes is Japan on the account. A mismatch is the first condition to resolve; do not assume repeated attempts will convert the code.
DLC does not appear or does not work
Compare the game’s sales market with the add-on’s eShop market. Nintendo warns that different-country software and additional content may not work together, and its Hong Kong guidance treats cross-region combinations as unconfirmed and unsupported. Contacting support cannot turn an unsupported pairing into a guaranteed one.
Funds seem to be missing
Check the balance under the Nintendo Account that added the funds. Balance is account-specific and is not shared with other users. If you changed consoles, link the same account on the new console; Nintendo says that account can carry its balance to another console.
Quick Recap
Key takeaways
- The Nintendo Account country/region, not the console’s location, controls the eShop market for a linked Switch user.
- Use a game and DLC from the same sales country; cross-region compatibility is not guaranteed.
- Redeem prepaid and download codes only when their issuing market matches the account region.
- Balance and purchase history stay with one Nintendo Account and cannot be merged or moved to another.
- Added balance and digital purchases are documented as non-refundable, so verify the market before paying.
