No. You can add, accept, remove, and manage Nintendo Switch friends without paying for Nintendo Switch Online. Your console user account does need to be linked to a Nintendo Account. A membership is a separate question: many games require it for internet multiplayer, while some games—including Fortnite—do not. Playing together in the same room is another option with its own game-specific requirements.
What “having friends” means on Nintendo Switch
The phrase can describe several different activities, and Nintendo applies different rules to each one:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Registering a friend: sending or accepting a friend request and maintaining your friend list. This does not require Nintendo Switch Online.
- Online multiplayer: joining a game session over the internet. The individual game decides whether a membership is required.
- Local multiplayer: playing on one console or on multiple consoles in the same room. This is separate from the online subscription.
- Chat and invitations: using the Nintendo Switch App, in-game voice chat, or Switch 2 GameChat. Communication rules can differ from both friend registration and gameplay.
Those distinctions explain why two friends can appear on each other’s lists even when one of them cannot join the other’s online match.

What you need to add or accept friends
A Nintendo Account linked to the console user
Friend requests are tied to a Nintendo Account, not merely to a local profile name. Link the Nintendo Account to the user account you use on the console before attempting to send or receive requests. The account can then use the Switch friend features without an active Nintendo Switch Online plan.

Adding a friend from the HOME Menu
- Open the user page for your profile from the HOME Menu.
- Choose Add Friend.
- Select the available method, such as searching for a friend code or reviewing incoming requests.
- Send the request, or accept the pending request shown in your received requests.
Menu wording can vary slightly between Switch system versions, but the Add Friend area is part of the console’s user and profile tools rather than a paid service. You can manage the resulting list—viewing friends, checking whether they are online, and removing entries—without subscribing.
If a request will not send
- Confirm that the profile you are using is linked to a Nintendo Account.
- Check that you entered the other player’s current friend code or selected the correct request.
- Make sure both consoles have an internet connection for exchanging requests.
- Review communication and parental-control settings if a supervised account cannot send or accept requests.
None of these checks turns a friend request into an online-play subscription requirement. They address account setup, connectivity, or safety settings instead.
When Nintendo Switch Online is required
Online play is decided by the game
Nintendo says a membership is required for co-operative and competitive online features in many first- and third-party Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 games. Its examples include Mario Kart World, Splatoon 3, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. If you want to join a friend’s internet match in a game covered by that rule, both players generally need the required membership tier.
The requirement belongs to the game mode, not to your friend list. You can register a friend first and discover the subscription requirement only when you try to enter an online lobby.

Some games do not require membership
Not every online game is behind Nintendo Switch Online. Nintendo specifically names Fortnite as an example of a game that can be played online without the membership. Other titles may use their own account systems or have free-to-play exceptions, so do not infer the rule from another game’s behavior.
How to verify a particular title
- Open the game’s Nintendo eShop listing or the game’s Nintendo product page for your region.
- Look for the online-play or Nintendo Switch Online requirement in the features and service information.
- Check the exact mode you intend to use. A game can offer local, single-player, and online modes with different requirements.
- Repeat the check after major updates or when changing regions, because service terms and feature availability can change.
This title-by-title check is more reliable than assuming that every multiplayer game follows the same rule.
Local multiplayer: play together without an online membership
Local play uses a different connection path from internet multiplayer. Depending on the title, friends can share one Switch system or connect multiple systems in the same room. Nintendo’s local-multiplayer guidance treats these as game features rather than Nintendo Switch Online features.

Friend lists, the Nintendo Switch App, and voice chat
Managing friends in the app
The Nintendo Switch App can provide friend-list management and related account features without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo also states that the app is not required to play Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2 games online. You can therefore add friends on the console and play a supported online game without installing the app, subject to that game’s own membership rule.
App voice chat has extra conditions
Voice chat for compatible Switch games is an additional app feature, not part of basic friend registration. Nintendo limits that voice-chat feature to account holders aged 13 and older and requires Nintendo Switch Online for compatible games. A younger player may still have a friend list and may be able to use a game’s other communication tools, but cannot use the app’s restricted voice-chat feature under those terms.
Switch 2 GameChat
GameChat is a Nintendo Switch 2 feature, so it should not be treated as the same thing as the original Switch friend list or the Nintendo Switch App. Nintendo’s FAQ described an open-access period without membership through March 31, 2026. That period has ended. Current GameChat access conditions may require Nintendo Switch Online or other eligibility, and Nintendo can change them by region or system update; check the current Nintendo Switch 2 support information before relying on GameChat for a group session.

Membership plans and trials: what they change
If the game you want to play requires Nintendo Switch Online, the subscription unlocks that game’s covered online features; it does not create the friend relationship itself. Nintendo’s service comparison describes a family group with up to eight Nintendo Accounts. That arrangement can be useful when several people in one household need access, but each account still uses its own profile and Nintendo Account.
Nintendo’s support information also describes a seven-day individual membership trial. Trial eligibility, renewal behavior, pricing, and regional availability can change, so read the offer shown on your account before starting it. A trial is a way to test a required online mode; it is not needed to send a friend request or maintain your list.

“We are friends, but I cannot join their game.”
Check the game’s online requirement first. If that title requires Nintendo Switch Online, friend registration alone will not authorize the online lobby. Then verify that both players are using the same regional release or compatible version, have installed updates, and are connected to the internet. If the title is an exception such as Fortnite, investigate the game’s own account, party, or parental-control settings instead of purchasing a membership automatically.

“I can see my friend online, but the invite is missing.”
Being online in the Switch friend list does not guarantee that a particular game is accepting invitations. Launch the game, check whether its online mode is currently available, and confirm that both players have completed any in-game tutorial or account-linking step. Some games expose invites only from an in-game lobby.
Best Value
- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
“We want to play in the same room.”
Look for the game’s local or local-wireless mode rather than its internet mode. Confirm the number of supported players, whether one system can host everyone, and whether every player needs a controller, console, or copy of the game. A Nintendo Switch Online subscription is not a substitute for those physical requirements.
“We only need to talk.”
Identify the exact chat tool. App voice chat has the membership and age-13 requirements described above. In-game chat follows the game’s design and safety controls. On Switch 2, verify the current GameChat access terms because the no-membership period ended on March 31, 2026.
“A child’s account cannot add or chat with someone.”
Review the Nintendo Account’s supervision and communication settings. A linked account can still be restricted by parental controls, and the app’s voice-chat age limit is separate from the ability to maintain a friend list.
A quick checklist before you play
- Link every player’s console profile to a Nintendo Account.
- Add or accept the friend request; no Nintendo Switch Online membership is needed for this step.
- Decide whether you are using same-system local, local wireless, or internet multiplayer.
- Check the exact game’s Nintendo eShop listing or product page for its online-membership requirement.
- Confirm extra systems, copies, controllers, accessories, updates, and in-game accounts required by the selected mode.
- Choose the communication method and check its separate age, membership, and regional rules.
The practical answer remains simple: Nintendo Switch Online is not required to have friends on Nintendo Switch. It is a game- and feature-specific requirement for some ways of playing and communicating with them.
