Nintendo Switch demo-to-full-game save transfer is decided by each game. Official pages confirm it for Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX and HARVESTELLA, but there is no console-wide setting that makes every demo compatible. Before you buy, check the exact title’s Nintendo eShop description, publisher support page, or game manual for an explicit carryover statement.
The short answer: demo progress is title-specific
A Switch demo can be built in several ways. Some demos write save data in a format the full release can recognize; others are separate trial software with no supported import path. Nintendo’s system does not promise that an ordinary demo save will migrate simply because the demo and full game share a name.

The safest rule is to look for wording such as “carry save data over to the full version” or “save data from the demo version can be carried over to the full game.” If the official title page or support answer does not mention transfer, treat compatibility as not established rather than assuming your progress will appear after purchase.

Those statements confirm support for those titles. They are not a universal promise for every Switch demo, and they do not establish that every item, unlock, or statistic transfers in every compatible game.
What can carry over—and what is not promised
Save data versus all of your progress
When a publisher confirms demo carryover, it is confirming that the full game can read the demo’s save data. The exact contents of that transfer remain game-specific. The official statements cited for Rescue Team DX and HARVESTELLA do not provide a universal list of transferred chapters, items, currency, achievements, settings, or unlocks.
Do not convert “save data carries over” into “everything carries over.” A game may import your current story position while handling tutorials, rewards, playtime, or settings differently. Only the individual publisher can define those details.

Same console and another console are different questions
Most people asking about demo carryover mean: “I played the demo on this Switch; will the full game on this Switch find my save?” That is a software-compatibility question. Moving the save from one Switch to another is a separate Nintendo account and system-transfer process.
Nintendo’s instructions for transferring save data to a nearby console require the same Nintendo Account to be linked to users on both consoles. The transfer procedure can overwrite save data already on the destination system, so follow Nintendo’s current on-screen warnings before starting. A successful console-to-console transfer still does not prove that a different full-game software title can read a demo save; the game must support that import separately.

Confirmed ordinary-demo examples
Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX
The Pokémon Company’s official game page states: “Aside from being able to play the early part of the story in this demo version, you can also carry that save data over to the full version.” This is a direct confirmation that the Switch demo and full release have a supported handoff.
The wording describes the early story portion and says the save data can be carried over; it does not promise that every possible demo activity or reward appears unchanged in the purchased game. Use the title’s own instructions for the exact behavior.
HARVESTELLA
Square Enix’s Support Center gives an equally direct answer to the question “Can demo save data be carried over to the full game?”: “Yes, save data from the demo version can be carried over to the full game.” This publisher-level confirmation is the authority for that title’s Switch demo.
These two examples demonstrate why checking the exact game matters. A positive answer for one publisher’s demo cannot be generalized to another publisher’s software architecture or release policy.
Ordinary demos versus Nintendo Switch Online Game Trials
A Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial is not the same product as an ordinary demo. Nintendo defines it as “a free, downloadable full version of a game made available to Nintendo Switch Online members.” Access lasts for a set period, and Nintendo explicitly says a Game Trial “allows you to experience the full game, but it is only playable for a set period of time.”

Because a Game Trial is a time-limited full game, Nintendo’s save-retention guidance is specific to that service. Do not use it as evidence that every ordinary demo imports into a retail copy.
What happens when a Game Trial ends?
Nintendo says the Game Trial save is not deleted when the trial ends. If you later purchase the game, you can use that retained save to continue where you stopped. The membership and availability window still matter: the trial itself is limited, and you need the purchased game to keep playing after access expires.
Nintendo also notes that downloadable content purchased for a trial cannot be played separately from the supporting game. After the trial ends, that DLC is inaccessible unless you purchase the game it supports. This is a separate ownership issue from whether the trial save remains stored.
Deleting or archiving the demo
Nintendo’s Data Management guidance says Switch game save data is stored in the console’s system memory, not on the microSD card. It also says archiving or deleting downloaded software leaves the save data unaffected.
That means removing a demo to free storage does not, by itself, erase its save file. However, save retention and save compatibility are different:

- Retention: the save remains on the console after the software is archived or deleted.
- Compatibility: the full-game software recognizes and imports that save.
Nintendo’s retention statement establishes the first point, not the second. If the publisher never designed the full release to read the demo save, reinstalling the demo or keeping it archived will not create an import feature.
Before you delete a demo
- Open the game’s official page or support FAQ and look for an explicit demo-to-full-game statement.
- Confirm whether the instruction applies to the same Switch version and region you are using.
- Keep the demo installed until you have verified the full game detects the save, if storage allows.
- If you archive or delete the demo, do not delete the separate save-data entry in System Settings. Software removal and save-data deletion are different actions.
How to check a game before buying
1. Identify the type of trial
Check whether the software is labeled as a normal demo or as a Nintendo Switch Online Game Trial. A Game Trial follows Nintendo’s save-retention policy; an ordinary demo requires title-specific confirmation.
2. Read the exact title’s official wording
Search the game’s Nintendo page, publisher FAQ, or support center for “demo save,” “carry over,” “transfer save data,” or “continue in the full version.” Prefer a sentence that explicitly names the Switch demo and full game.
3. Separate same-console play from a console move
If you are buying on the same Switch, you are checking whether the retail software can read the existing demo save. If you are changing consoles, first follow Nintendo’s nearby save-transfer requirements, including the same Nintendo Account on both users, and then verify the game’s demo-import support.
4. Check what the statement does not say
Look for limits on chapters, one-time rewards, downloadable content, regional versions, or required updates. If the official page only says that “save data” carries over, do not assume it guarantees every unlock or setting.

5. Preserve the save until the handoff works
Because archiving normally leaves save data intact, you can remove the demo for space. Still, keeping it installed until the full game has recognized the save gives you an easier troubleshooting path if the import prompt does not appear.
Troubleshooting when the full game does not find the demo save
The title has no official carryover statement
There may be no supported import. Check the publisher’s current support page rather than relying on reports about another game in the series. The absence of a statement is not proof that transfer fails, but it is not a basis for promising that it works.
You used a Game Trial but bought a different edition
Confirm that the purchased software corresponds to the trial and that any required downloadable content or edition-specific content is installed. Nintendo’s Game Trial guidance covers continuing after purchasing the game, not every possible mismatch between releases.
You moved to another Switch
Verify that the user on each console is linked to the same Nintendo Account and that the save-transfer process completed. A destination save can be overwritten during transfer, so check which copy you intend to keep before confirming the operation.
You deleted save data, not just the demo
Archiving or deleting downloaded software normally leaves save data alone, but using the separate save-data deletion command removes the file. If the save was deleted, reinstalling the demo cannot restore it unless you have another supported backup or transfer source.
The game imported only part of the progress
That can be normal if the publisher’s implementation transfers a defined portion of the demo state. Compare the result with the title’s own support notes; do not infer a system-wide failure from a missing item, setting, or unlock unless the publisher promised it would transfer.

Bottom line for a purchase decision
Buy on the assumption that demo progress transfers only when the exact title’s official documentation says so. Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX and HARVESTELLA are confirmed ordinary-demo examples. Nintendo Switch Online Game Trials are a separate, time-limited full-game service whose saves Nintendo says remain available after the trial and can continue after purchase. Archiving or deleting software generally preserves the save file, but preservation does not make an incompatible demo save readable by the full game.
If the game’s official page is silent, ask the publisher before spending money or be prepared to start over. That is the only reliable way to avoid treating one confirmed example as a rule for the entire Switch library.
