Most Nintendo Switch game cards are not region locked, but that does not make every imported purchase fully interchangeable. Chinese-region consoles and cards are the stated exception, while downloadable content, eShop cards, download codes and account settings have their own region rules. Check the individual game’s supported regions before buying, then match every digital item to that version.
What “region compatibility” means on Nintendo Switch
Region compatibility is not one single switch-wide rule. A physical card can start on a console while its downloadable add-ons, redemption codes or online storefront use different regional requirements. Treat these as separate checks: the console and card, the specific game version, the Nintendo Account country, the eShop country, and the region printed on any digital product.

Physical cards are generally not region locked
Nintendo’s Americas support FAQ states: “With the exception of consoles and game cards distributed in the Chinese region, Nintendo Switch game cards are not region locked.” In practical terms, a card sold for one ordinary market will generally run on a Switch from another ordinary market. The stated exception is important: Nintendo says Chinese-region consoles and games are not compatible with those distributed in the Americas. Read the complete Nintendo Switch Regional Compatibility FAQ before treating an import as interchangeable.

“Not region locked” is not a support guarantee
Nintendo separately cautions that it has not tested all overseas software with consoles from every region. It therefore cannot guarantee full service and support for every imported title and recommends buying software made for the console’s region. A card may launch and still fall outside the combinations Nintendo has verified. That is a support and service qualification, not a contradiction of the general no-lock rule.

How to verify a particular game’s supported regions
The safest decision is title-specific rather than based on a general assumption about Switch cards. Nintendo identifies two places to check.
Read the game’s packaging
Look for the supported-region information on the physical game’s packaging before purchase. This is especially valuable when the box is imported, when several regional editions share a name, or when you already know that you will need downloadable content.
Check from the HOME Menu
- Insert the game card and highlight its software icon on the Nintendo Switch HOME Menu.
- Press the + or − button to open the software menu.
- Choose Software Information.
- Open Support Information.
- Use the supported-region information shown for that software when checking DLC, codes and the Nintendo Account country.
Nintendo’s missing-content guidance also directs players to compare the game’s supported regions with the DLC region and to confirm that the Nintendo Account country/region is compatible with the game version. The relevant instructions are in Digital Content is Missing from Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch (Games, DLC, Etc).

How the Nintendo Account controls eShop country
The eShop country on a Switch follows the country setting in the Nintendo Account. Nintendo phrases the rule directly: “The Nintendo eShop country on Nintendo Switch will be determined by the country settings in your Nintendo Account.” Changing a console’s location by itself does not create an independent storefront; the account country is the controlling setting.
When changing country is appropriate
Nintendo describes changing the account country for people who relocate. During the change, the account holder must agree to the applicable account agreement and privacy policy for the new country. The eShop country updates when the Switch connects again later, rather than necessarily changing at the instant the account setting is edited. Nintendo’s account-country article explains the process and limitations at Can I Change the eShop Country?.
Use your remaining balance first
eShop balance does not carry over when the account country changes. The Americas support guidance says remaining funds must be used before the country can be changed. A country switch is therefore not a cost-free way to browse another storefront: check the balance first, spend or otherwise resolve it under the current country, and only then proceed.

What this setting does not solve
Changing the account country does not turn every physical game into a different regional edition, and it does not make a mismatched DLC package compatible. It selects the eShop country associated with that account. The software’s supported regions and the digital item’s intended region still have to agree.
eShop cards and download codes have stricter matching
Digital payment and redemption products follow their intended country or region even though a physical card may run across ordinary console markets.
| Digital item | Required match | What happens with a mismatch |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo eShop card | The eShop country or region for which the card was issued | Nintendo says the card works only with that intended eShop country or region; Nintendo cannot replace, exchange or refund a card bought for another country or region. |
| Game or DLC download code | An eShop set to the same region as the game | Nintendo’s code guidance says the code must be redeemed through an eShop set to the same region as the game. |
| DLC package | The region of the game release it supports | DLC works only with games released for the same region as the DLC; a card launching successfully does not establish DLC compatibility. |
Before entering a code, identify the eShop country selected by the Nintendo Account and compare it with the code’s region. Nintendo’s detailed troubleshooting article is Problems with Download Codes (Software and Downloadable Content). Do not assume that a card purchased in one country can be converted, exchanged or refunded for use elsewhere.

DLC is a separate compatibility decision
DLC is the most common place where “the game works” and “the purchase works” diverge. Nintendo’s regional FAQ says DLC only works with games released for the same region as the DLC. Two releases can have the same title while representing different regional software versions, so the name alone is not enough evidence.
Check before purchasing an add-on
- Open the base game’s Software Information > Support Information screen and note its supported regions.
- Identify the region for which the DLC is intended in the store listing, code description or package.
- Confirm that the DLC region is one of the regions supported by the installed game version.
- Check that the Nintendo Account country/region is compatible with that game version and with the eShop in which you intend to buy or redeem the add-on.
If purchased content is missing, Nintendo’s guidance at Digital Content is Missing from Nintendo Switch 2 or Nintendo Switch (Games, DLC, Etc) uses the same three-way check: the game’s supported regions, the DLC’s intended region and the account country/region. These checks are more reliable than inferring compatibility from whether the cartridge icon appears or the base game starts.

| Purchase path | Region question to answer | Key limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Physical game card | Is the specific card from a supported non-Chinese region, and does the console fall within Nintendo’s compatibility guidance? | Generally not region locked, except Chinese-region consoles and cards; overseas software may not have been tested on every console region and may not receive full service or support. |
| Digital game from eShop | Which country is set on the Nintendo Account, and which eShop does that select? | The eShop country follows the account country. Changing country can require using remaining balance first because funds do not carry over. |
| eShop prepaid card | Does the card’s intended country or region exactly match the eShop country? | Cards are region-specific; Nintendo says it cannot replace, exchange or refund one bought for another region. |
| Download code | Is the eShop set to the same region as the game named by the code? | Codes must be redeemed through an eShop set to the same region as the game. |
| DLC for a physical or digital game | Does the DLC region match the game’s released region, and is the account country compatible? | DLC is not covered by the physical card’s ability to launch; a region mismatch can leave the add-on unavailable or missing. |
Troubleshooting common region problems
The imported card does not behave as expected
First identify whether the card or console is from the Chinese region, because that is Nintendo’s explicit compatibility exception. If it is not, open the software’s support information and compare the listed regions with the console’s market. Remember that Nintendo has not tested every overseas title on every regional console, so a lack of guaranteed service or support can remain even when the general card rule suggests compatibility. Nintendo’s Australia/New Zealand Regional Compatibility FAQ provides the corresponding regional guidance for that market.
DLC is missing after the base game launches
Do not buy the DLC again immediately. Compare the game’s supported regions, the DLC’s intended region and the Nintendo Account country/region. If any one of those points does not match, the physical card’s successful launch does not establish that the add-on can work.
An eShop card or code will not redeem
Check the country shown by the Nintendo Account because it determines the eShop country. Then compare that country with the eShop card’s intended region or, for a download code, with the region of the game named by the code. Nintendo’s code troubleshooting page lists the same-region requirement; an incorrectly purchased card is not made valid by changing expectations after the fact, and Nintendo says cards for another region cannot be replaced, exchanged or refunded.
You want to change the account country but have funds left
Use the remaining balance before attempting the change. Nintendo says eShop funds do not transfer between account countries and that remaining funds must be used before the country can be changed. After the account-country change and acceptance of the new country’s agreements and privacy policy, reconnect the Switch so its eShop can update.
A pre-purchase checklist for imported games
- Identify the edition: Read the packaging or listing carefully enough to distinguish the game’s regional release.
- Check the console exception: Chinese-region consoles and game cards are the stated incompatibility case with American-distributed hardware and games.
- Verify supported regions: On the Switch, use the game’s HOME Menu icon, + or −, then Software Information > Support Information.
- Plan DLC: Confirm that every planned add-on is for the same released region as the game.
- Check the account country: That setting determines the eShop country used for digital purchases.
- Match prepaid products: An eShop card must be for the eShop’s country or region; a download code must match the game’s eShop region.
- Account for support: Nintendo has not tested every overseas software-and-console combination and recommends software intended for the console’s region.
The practical bottom line for buyers
An ordinary imported physical Switch game will usually play because Nintendo does not generally region-lock game cards. The safe purchase decision, however, requires more than seeing the cartridge boot: rule out the Chinese-region exception, verify the title’s supported regions, and accept Nintendo’s qualification about untested overseas software and support. For anything digital, match regions deliberately—account country to eShop, eShop card to storefront, download code to game region, and DLC to the exact game release. Those checks prevent the most expensive mistake: buying a physical edition that works, then discovering that the digital content you expected belongs to another region.
