Joy-Con drift is when a control stick registers movement even when you are not touching it, or otherwise responds incorrectly. Start with Nintendo’s checks—connection, controller mapping, updates, covers and calibration—before considering repair. If the problem persists, use Nintendo’s service route for your region; DIY stick replacement is an optional later step, not the first one.

What Joy-Con drift looks like

Nintendo describes the issue as control sticks that do not respond or respond incorrectly. In practical terms, the game may register movement without you touching the stick. That symptom does not establish one universal cause: Nintendo’s troubleshooting pages do not identify a single technical root cause for every affected controller.

Check the controller before assuming the stick is faulty

  1. Confirm the Joy-Con is recognized as attached. Open the Controllers screen and check whether the controller registers correctly when attached. If it does not, use Nintendo’s connection and recognition troubleshooting rather than treating the problem as drift.
  2. Check controller mapping. Make sure inputs are set to the standard configuration. A wrench icon in menus indicates remapped inputs. Nintendo UK notes that putting the console to sleep and waking it can offer an option to reset custom inputs.
  3. Update the console and Joy-Con. Install the latest available system update and controller firmware using the console’s update options.
  4. Remove any skin or cover, then calibrate the stick. Covers can interfere with movement. Use the console’s control-stick calibration option and follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. Check whether it happens in one game only. Update that game and review its settings or electronic manual. Tilt controls, for example, can make movement seem like an incorrect stick input; Nintendo cites Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as an example.

Nintendo’s troubleshooting pages provide the regional steps and service guidance: Nintendo of America, Nintendo UK and Nintendo Australia.

When to contact Nintendo for service

If the Joy-Con is recognized correctly but its stick still behaves incorrectly after calibration, follow Nintendo’s service process for your location. Check current eligibility and fees with local Nintendo support; service terms are not identical across regions.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Joy-Con (L/R) - Neon Red/Neon Blue
  • Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
  • The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
  • Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
  • Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
  • United States and Canada: Nintendo of America’s page provides an online service request for the affected Joy-Con. Its guidance says not to send the console. The online request described there is for the US and Canada.
  • EEA, UK and Switzerland: Nintendo UK says that, until further notice, official repair centres will repair control-stick responsiveness syndrome at no charge for consumers who purchased the respective product in those territories. Its stated offer includes wear-related cases and cases beyond Nintendo’s 24-month manufacturer’s warranty. The page lists exceptions, including some accessory-related causes, accidental damage, commercial use, unauthorized modification or repair, and altered or removed serial numbers. This is a regional offer, not a worldwide policy; statutory consumer rights are separate.
  • Australia: Nintendo Australia recommends the same general checks and says the controller may need inspection if they do not resolve the issue. It also says the console may need inspection if the problem persists with Joy-Con sticks. Check Nintendo Australia’s current warranty and service information.

DIY joystick replacement: an optional hardware repair

If you choose to replace a stick yourself, match the replacement part and instructions to the exact controller, console and side being repaired. iFixit’s Joy-Con/Switch Lite joystick listing describes a replacement part and repair kit and links to separate left- and right-stick guides. Its Nintendo Switch parts catalog also lists a Gulikit TMR replacement joystick option.

A Switch Lite has integrated controls and does not accept detachable Joy-Con. Do not assume that a part or guide for a detachable Joy-Con fits every Switch model or repair. Opening a controller is also different from reversible software troubleshooting: Nintendo UK’s terms identify unauthorized opening, modification or repair as a possible exception to its no-charge service offer in the circumstances described on its page. Check regional service eligibility before opening a controller; the effect depends on the applicable terms and circumstances.

These product listings establish that replacement parts and guides exist, not that a repair will succeed or improve long-term reliability. No repair outcome, duration or cost is guaranteed here.
