Nintendo Switch 2: Is It Worth Upgrading?

Switch 2’s screen, storage, supported features and new games may justify its $499.99 U.S. MSRP for some owners. Check costs and compatibility before upgrading.

For U.S. Switch owners, upgrading is most worthwhile if you want Switch 2-exclusive games, care about its hardware improvements, or will benefit from supported upgrades to games you already own. If your current Switch library and play experience are meeting your needs, keeping the original is a reasonable choice. Nintendo’s current U.S. MSRP for the Switch 2 system is $499.99, so the decision depends on what you’ll use—not a universal claim that every owner should upgrade.

What does Switch 2 cost in the U.S.?

Nintendo of America’s current MSRP for the Switch 2 system is $499.99, effective September 1, 2026. That replaces the historical launch MSRP of $449.99; the $499.99 Mario Kart World bundle price announced at launch was a separate bundle, not the standard system price. Retail prices and bundles can differ. This figure is specific to the U.S.; Nintendo said Latin American pricing would be announced later, and it should not be applied to other regions.

Think about your total cost, not just the console price: the games you want, any replacement controllers or accessories your setup needs, and a Nintendo Switch Online membership if you expect to use GameChat. Check the price in your market before deciding.

What do you gain with Switch 2?

Nintendo’s specifications describe tangible changes, but their value depends on how and what you play. The following are manufacturer-listed capabilities, not promises that every game uses each feature.

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
  • A larger, sharper handheld screen: the built-in LCD measures 7.9 inches and has a 1080p resolution.
  • More built-in storage: 256 GB, with some of that space reserved for system use.
  • More capable hardware: Nintendo describes enhanced processing and visuals, but the specifications cited here do not establish an independent, measured performance increase for particular games.
  • New controller options: Joy-Con 2 attach magnetically, and their mouse controls are available in supported games.
  • Higher supported TV output: compatible games and displays can support output up to 4K or 120 fps. Those are upper supported modes, not settings every game can reach.
  • Variable refresh rate: Nintendo lists VRR in handheld mode. A system update released September 10, 2026, added VRR in TV mode.

These upgrades matter most if you often play in handheld mode, want the newer control options in games that use them, or have a TV and games that can take advantage of supported output modes. If you mainly play games that already look and run well for you on the original Switch, the listed specifications alone may not justify the cost.

Will your Switch games and accessories work?

Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but Nintendo cautions that some titles may not be supported or fully compatible. Some games also offer free updates or paid upgrades for improved performance or added content. Before trading in or giving away your old console, check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information for the games you rely on.

Accessory reuse is also selective. Original Joy-Con controllers can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, but they cannot attach to it. They need the original console or a compatible charging accessory to recharge. Consult Nintendo’s compatibility guidance for each other accessory rather than assuming it carries over.

Which online features affect the decision?

GameChat lets players talk and share screens while playing. Its open-access period ended in March 2026; Nintendo now says a Nintendo Switch Online membership is required. If GameChat is part of why you want Switch 2, include that ongoing membership requirement in your decision. Other online-service details may depend on your account and the feature you use, so check Nintendo’s current FAQ before relying on a particular setup.

Should you upgrade or keep your current Switch?

Switch 2 is a stronger fit if…

  • You want Switch 2-exclusive games and are ready to pay for the console to play them.
  • The larger 1080p handheld screen, additional built-in storage, or supported visual and performance improvements would make a meaningful difference to your play.
  • You have a compatible TV and are interested in games that support higher output modes or TV-mode VRR.
  • You have checked that your must-play Switch games and essential accessories work with Switch 2, or have budgeted for replacements or upgrades.

Keeping the original Switch makes sense if…

  • Your current games and play experience meet your needs, and you do not have a compelling reason to play Switch 2-only titles.
  • The price would mean compromising on games or other parts of your setup you value more.
  • Your favorite titles or key accessories have compatibility caveats you are not willing to work around.

A quick decision check

  1. List the games you actually want to play. Separate Switch 2-only games from Switch titles you already own, then check the latter against Nintendo’s compatibility information.
  2. Price the complete setup locally. Start with the current console price in your region, then add any game, controller, accessory, or online membership costs that apply to you.
  3. Match the features to your habits. Decide whether the handheld display, storage, mouse controls, supported TV modes, or VRR would affect your own play—not just whether they sound like upgrades on a spec sheet.
  4. Check what you would leave behind. Confirm compatibility for the games, controllers, and other accessories you depend on before selling or trading in the original system.

There is no universal performance or value verdict established by Nintendo’s specifications and compatibility guidance. The practical question is whether the games and features you will use are worth the full cost to you.
