If your Nintendo Switch keeps turning off by itself, first check whether it is entering Sleep Mode or actually losing power. Sleep Mode is often caused by inactivity, a low battery, or a parental play-time limit; a black screen or unresponsive console calls for Nintendo’s power-reset steps. These checks can narrow down what is happening, but they cannot diagnose an internal fault.
First, tell Sleep Mode from a loss of power
A dark screen does not always mean the console has shut down. In TV Mode, the Switch screen is off while docked because the game displays on the television. If the console goes dark after sitting idle, check its Auto-Sleep setting before treating the symptom as a fault.
Check the inactivity setting
Nintendo lists default Auto-Sleep periods of one hour in TV Mode and ten minutes in handheld or tabletop mode. You can change them at System Settings → Sleep Mode. The setting may have been changed from the default.
Check charge and parental controls
A low battery can lead to Sleep Mode when the console is used handheld or tabletop. A parent or guardian may also have set a daily play-time limit in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app; Nintendo says the console automatically enters Sleep Mode when that limit is reached.

Notice when the behavior occurs: after inactivity, when a play-time limit is reached, only when unplugged, or during a particular activity. Whether it also happens while connected to power is useful context for the next checks, but none of these observations alone proves a specific internal problem.

- Remove the console from the dock.
- Unplug the AC adapter from both the wall outlet and the console or dock. Leave it unplugged for 30 seconds.
- Hold the console’s POWER button for 20 seconds to force it to shut down.
- Reconnect the adapter to the outlet first, then to the console.
- Press POWER once.
If the battery may be nearly empty and a charging indicator briefly appears on an otherwise blank screen, charge the console for at least 15–30 minutes before trying again. Nintendo specifies an undamaged Switch AC adapter, model HAC-002. Check the adapter’s model marking and look for a frayed or split cable, kinks, or loose connectors. Nintendo warns that damaged or unlicensed adapters may have compatibility problems.
If the console starts, Nintendo recommends checking that the system is up to date. If the reset and charging checks do not resolve the issue, Nintendo’s guidance is to arrange service and include the AC adapter for testing. - Plug in the AC adapter and power your Nintendo Switch system from any 120-volt outlet. The AC adapter also allows you to recharge the battery, even while you play.
If it shuts down when unplugged, check battery expectations
Battery runtime depends on the Switch model and the software being used. Nintendo’s approximate ranges are:
| Model | Approximate battery life |
|---|---|
| Original Switch HAC-001 (serial begins XAW) | 2.5–6.5 hours |
| Revised Switch HAC-001(-01) (serial begins XKW) | 4.5–9 hours |
| Switch Lite HDH-001 | 3–7 hours |
| Switch OLED HEG-001 | 4.5–9 hours |
These are Nintendo estimates, not guarantees; software and use affect runtime. Nintendo also estimates that after about 800 charge cycles, battery capacity is about 80% of that of a new system, which it describes as normal lithium-ion battery aging. That general estimate does not establish the condition of an individual console.

If the battery percentage seems inaccurate
Nintendo documents a calibration procedure for an indicator that displays incorrectly. It is not a universal fix for random shutdowns:
- Set Auto-Sleep to Never.
- Fully charge the console, or charge it for three hours, then leave it connected for one additional hour.
- Use the HOME Menu until the battery is almost depleted.
- Power the console down and leave it off for at least 30 minutes.
- Repeat the charge-and-discharge sequence several times.
If the indicator does not gradually improve, Nintendo says the console may need service.

Charging and battery care
Nintendo estimates about three hours to fully charge while the console is off or in Sleep Mode. Its guidance says to charge in an environment of 5–35°C and to charge the console at least once every six months to avoid over-discharge after long periods without charging. Repeated charging gradually shortens usable battery time.
The console battery is not intended for owner replacement; Nintendo directs owners to its service center for battery replacement. If an adapter is damaged or unsuitable, check Nintendo’s current regional guidance for the correct replacement. Replacing an adapter is relevant when the existing one is damaged or unsuitable; it is not a guaranteed remedy for an internal console fault.
