Nintendo released the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model, model HEG-001, on October 8, 2021. “Normal Switch” can mean more than one standard-hardware revision, so this comparison uses Nintendo’s HAC-001(-01) comparison model rather than assuming the original launch hardware. Nintendo’s official OLED model specifications and support information identify the principal differences.

Is the Nintendo Switch OLED screen bigger and better?
Yes. The OLED model uses a 7.0-inch OLED touchscreen, compared with the standard Switch’s 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen. The larger panel gives handheld games more visual space, while OLED display technology generally produces more vivid colors, deeper blacks, and stronger contrast.
Nintendo explains that an Organic Electro-Luminescent Display uses luminescent material to display color and does not require the backlight used by LCD screens. The practical difference is most noticeable when playing handheld, especially in games with dark scenes, colorful art, or small interface elements. The OLED screen does not make games render at a higher frame rate or resolution simply because the panel is OLED.
Is Switch OLED faster than the regular Switch?
No. The Nintendo Switch OLED is not a performance-tier upgrade. Nintendo’s comparison identifies the display, storage, stand, audio, and dock changes, but does not identify a faster processor or a higher-performance game mode for the OLED model.
Recommended Free Tools
Both consoles run the core Nintendo Switch software library and use compatible Nintendo Switch controllers. Loading behavior, frame rates, and game performance should not be treated as reasons to choose OLED unless a specific game or accessory has separate compatibility requirements.
Does Switch OLED have better battery life?
No. Nintendo lists approximately 4.5–9 hours of battery life for both the OLED model and the HAC-001(-01) standard Switch in this comparison. Actual endurance varies with the game, brightness, wireless features, audio volume, and other settings, but the OLED model should not be marketed as a battery upgrade.

- NEW'C Nintendo Switch (modèle OLED) Tempered Glass Screen Protector, delicate touch: coated on the back with a solid silicon adhesive which makes installation easy and attaches the film firmly so as not to affect the sensitivity of the touch screen
The important distinction is between the OLED model and older launch-era hardware. This article follows Nintendo’s published comparison with HAC-001(-01), so the conclusion is specifically that OLED has no listed battery-life advantage over that standard revision.
What storage advantage does Switch OLED have?
The Nintendo Switch OLED includes 64 GB of internal storage, while the standard Switch includes 32 GB. According to Nintendo’s 2021 comparison, the OLED model therefore provides twice the listed built-in capacity.
Extra storage is useful for players who buy digital games, download large updates, or keep screenshots and video clips on the console. Both systems support expandable storage, so the 32 GB model can be expanded rather than discarded. The OLED advantage is convenience and more room before an expansion card becomes necessary, not exclusive access to games.
Why is the OLED model better for tabletop play?
The OLED model is better for tabletop play because its wide, adjustable metallic stand provides a broader base and more viewing-angle flexibility than the standard Switch’s replaceable stand.
The improvement matters when the console is placed on a table for local multiplayer or solo play. The OLED model also has enhanced onboard audio during handheld and tabletop play, which makes its speakers more useful when the console is away from a television and headphones are not being used.

Does the OLED Switch come with Ethernet?
Yes. The dock bundled with the Nintendo Switch OLED has a built-in wired LAN port. The standard Switch dock does not have built-in Ethernet, so standard-dock owners who want a wired connection need a compatible USB LAN adapter and an Ethernet cable. Nintendo documents compatible adapters and connection requirements in its LAN adapter support guidance and internet-connection requirements.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWired LAN can be useful for players who prefer a physical network connection or whose Wi-Fi is unreliable. The OLED dock’s LAN port is a convenience feature; it does not turn the OLED console into a faster gaming system by itself.
How different are the size and weight?
The OLED model is slightly longer and heavier with Joy-Con attached. Nintendo lists approximately 9.5 inches of length and 0.93 lb for the OLED model, compared with approximately 9.4 inches and 0.88 lb for the standard Switch. Both are listed at approximately 4 inches high and 0.55 inches deep with Joy-Con attached.
| Measurement with Joy-Con attached | Switch OLED | Standard Switch | Practical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Height | Approximately 4 inches | Approximately 4 inches | Essentially the same listed height. |
| Length | Approximately 9.5 inches | Approximately 9.4 inches | OLED is slightly longer. |
| Depth | Approximately 0.55 inches | Approximately 0.55 inches | The listed depth is the same. |
| Weight | Approximately 0.93 lb | Approximately 0.88 lb | OLED is slightly heavier in portable use. |
The small size difference is usually unimportant during play, but it can affect cases, screen protectors, grips, and other fitted accessories. Nintendo specifically warns that standard Nintendo Switch screen protectors may not fit the OLED model correctly. Some Nintendo Labo Toy-Con products may also not fit cleanly, so accessory compatibility should be confirmed before purchase.
Can normal Switch games play on OLED?
Yes. The Nintendo Switch OLED supports the Nintendo Switch game library and controllers compatible with Nintendo Switch systems. The OLED model is not a separate game ecosystem, and buying OLED does not require rebuilding a different software library.

The main compatibility caution concerns accessories rather than games. Standard screen protectors may be the wrong size, some fitted cases may be too tight, and certain Nintendo Labo Toy-Con products may not align properly with the OLED model’s larger dimensions.
The OLED console can also be used with a standard Nintendo Switch dock. Nintendo states that the OLED model’s LAN-equipped dock is compatible with Nintendo Switch systems updated to system version 11.0.0 or later. Owners should check Nintendo’s current support instructions before relying on a dock swap.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is the Nintendo Switch OLED worth it?
The Nintendo Switch OLED is worth it for a new buyer who expects to play handheld or tabletop frequently and values a larger, higher-contrast screen. The adjustable stand, enhanced audio, 64 GB of storage, and built-in dock LAN strengthen the case, but the screen is the improvement most portable players will notice repeatedly.
The standard Switch can be the better value for a buyer who mostly plays docked on a television, wants the same core Switch library at a substantially lower price, or is comfortable using Wi-Fi. The standard model remains especially sensible when the screen is rarely visible and built-in dock Ethernet is not important.
| Your priority | Better choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Frequent handheld play | Switch OLED | The 7.0-inch OLED touchscreen is larger and offers the most visible day-to-day improvement. |
| Frequent tabletop play | Switch OLED | The wide adjustable stand and enhanced onboard audio improve tabletop use. |
| Mostly television play | Standard Switch | The OLED screen is not used while docked, while the core software experience remains the same. |
| Large digital library | Switch OLED | 64 GB of internal storage provides twice the listed capacity of the standard model. |
| Wired internet without an adapter | Switch OLED | The included dock has built-in wired LAN. |
| Lowest purchase price | Usually standard Switch | When the standard model is substantially cheaper, it retains the same core Switch library and play model. |
| Existing standard-Switch owner | Upgrade selectively | Upgrade is most compelling when handheld screen quality is the main frustration. |
Should you upgrade from the regular Switch to OLED?
Upgrade from a standard Switch to OLED when handheld viewing is your main complaint or when the adjustable stand, additional storage, and built-in dock LAN solve real problems in your setup. An upgrade is harder to justify when the console is used almost exclusively docked and the existing display, storage, and networking arrangements are satisfactory.

The OLED model should not be purchased expecting higher frame rates, a faster processor, longer battery life, or a new game library. The upgrade changes how comfortably and pleasantly the existing Switch experience is used rather than changing the fundamental performance class of the console.
What accessories need extra attention?
The most important accessory check is a screen protector designed for the Nintendo Switch OLED. Nintendo says the larger OLED screen can cause standard Switch screen protectors to fit incorrectly, so buyers should confirm OLED compatibility before ordering.
Storage expansion remains relevant for either console, particularly for digital-game libraries. A Nintendo Switch-compatible microSDXC memory card can supplement the OLED model’s 64 GB or the standard model’s 32 GB. Standard-dock owners who want wired networking may also need a USB Ethernet adapter and Ethernet cable. Carrying cases and fitted tabletop accessories should be checked against the OLED model’s slightly longer dimensions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Switch OLED faster than the regular Switch?
The Nintendo Switch OLED is not faster than the standard Switch. Nintendo’s published comparison does not identify a faster processor or higher-performance game tier for the OLED model; the main changes are the screen, storage, stand, audio, and dock.
Is the OLED Switch screen bigger?
Yes. The OLED model has a 7.0-inch OLED touchscreen, while the standard Switch has a 6.2-inch LCD touchscreen. The larger OLED panel generally provides more vivid colors, deeper blacks, and stronger contrast.
Does Switch OLED have better battery life?
No. Nintendo lists approximately 4.5–9 hours of battery life for both the OLED model and the standard HAC-001(-01) Switch in this comparison.
Can normal Switch games play on OLED?
Yes. The OLED model supports Nintendo Switch software and compatible Nintendo Switch controllers, so the core Switch game library works on both systems. Some fitted accessories, including standard screen protectors and certain Nintendo Labo Toy-Con products, may not fit correctly.
The Bottom Line
The Nintendo Switch OLED is the better all-around choice for a new buyer who plays handheld or tabletop. The standard Switch remains a sound value for primarily docked or price-sensitive players because both models support the same core Switch software experience, and Nintendo lists the same approximately 4.5–9-hour battery-life range for both comparison models.
