Which membership do you need?
The Genesis collection requires an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. A standard Nintendo Switch Online membership does not include it. The Expansion Pack also includes other libraries and benefits, but those are separate from the Genesis catalog.

How to download and play the games
- On Switch or Switch 2, open the Nintendo Switch Online area or Nintendo eShop and download the Nintendo Classics library app for SEGA Genesis.
- Open the downloaded app from the console’s HOME Menu. Nintendo’s access instructions require a compatible console, an internet connection and the appropriate active membership; see How to Access the Nintendo Classics Game Libraries.
- Choose a game from the collection to start playing.
Nintendo’s store listing says the digital Genesis software is supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Switch.
Membership checks and offline play
After downloading the library, you can play offline, but the console must connect online to verify membership at least once every seven days. If the membership expires or is canceled, access to the collection ends; Nintendo says saved game data remains on the console. Rewind, save states and online play
Nintendo lists rewind, save-state support and online play among the collection’s features. Online play depends on the multiplayer features of each original game, so it does not mean every title in the 50-game list supports multiplayer. In supported one- or two-player modes, players can play together; some single-player games also offer a way to take turns.

No. The games can be played without Nintendo’s dedicated controller. Nintendo documents an optional wireless SEGA Genesis Control Pad designed for the collection, but says compatibility with other games is not guaranteed. Its controller overview and FAQ covers intended use and regional details. Consider the optional SEGA Genesis-style Switch controller if you want a more period-appropriate layout; it is not a membership requirement.
