Is Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack worth it for N64 games? In the U.S., it can be a good buy if you want several games in Nintendo’s current N64 selection, or will use the tier’s other libraries, select DLC, and standard online benefits. It is harder to justify for just one or two N64 titles if you will ignore the rest. Check Nintendo’s current game list against your must-plays first: the subscription includes a curated selection, not every N64 game.
What does Expansion Pack cost compared with standard Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo’s current U.S. annual prices are $49.99 for an individual Expansion Pack membership and $79.99 for a family membership. Standard Nintendo Switch Online costs $19.99 per year for an individual and $34.99 per year for a family. That makes the annual upgrade difference $30 for an individual plan or $45 for a family plan. Nintendo says family membership covers up to eight Nintendo Accounts.

Are the N64 games included with Expansion Pack?
Yes. An active Expansion Pack membership provides access to Nintendo’s N64 Classics collection. Nintendo describes it as a selection of games, so do not assume that a particular favorite—or the entire N64 catalog—is included. Browse the current N64 Classics game list and verify that the titles you want are there before subscribing; the available selection can change.

The practical value depends less on how many games appear in the collection than on which ones you will actually play. If multiple titles appeal to you, the $30 annual difference over an individual standard membership may be easier to justify. If you are subscribing for one game, weigh that cost against your expected use rather than treating the whole collection as a guaranteed benefit.
What else comes with Expansion Pack?
The tier includes standard Nintendo Switch Online benefits plus access to select Game Boy Advance, Nintendo 64, Virtual Boy, and SEGA Genesis titles, as well as select downloadable content. Nintendo names Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, and Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion among the included DLC. Some benefits depend on your console. Nintendo Switch 2 owners also get access to select Nintendo GameCube Classics and certain Switch 2 edition upgrades. Do not count those Switch 2-specific features toward the value if you only play on Switch or Switch Lite. Nintendo distinguished the GameCube access for Switch 2 in its September 2025 announcement.
Can you play N64 games online, and do you need the N64 controller?
Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes for the N64 Classics collection. It lists single-system play for one to four players and online play for two to four. Nintendo also notes that the games’ behavior and presentation can differ from their original N64 versions, so the collection should not be assumed to reproduce every game identically.

The Nintendo 64 Controller is optional, not a requirement. Nintendo lists it as a supported controller option on Switch 2; you can consider the collection without buying that accessory. Check Nintendo’s N64 Classics page for the current supported-system and controller information.

- Good fit: You want several games in the current N64 selection, or you expect to use other included classic libraries or select DLC as well.
- Potentially better value for a household: Multiple Nintendo Accounts can share a family membership, which covers up to eight accounts. Compare the family-plan upgrade difference with the individual plans your household would otherwise need.
- Less compelling: You want only one or two N64 games and are unlikely to use the other included features.
- Switch 2-specific consideration: Select GameCube Classics and certain Switch 2 edition upgrades may add value if you own Switch 2; they are not benefits for Switch or Switch Lite-only players.
For any plan, the decisive check is whether the current catalog contains the games you actually want and whether you will use enough of the other included benefits to make the added annual cost worthwhile.
