In Tom’s Hardware’s 2024 1080p test suite, the 5800X3D averaged 9% faster, but its price in that review comparison was 35% higher. Those are results from one review and its launch-era pricing—not a guaranteed frame-rate gain or a guide to current used prices.
What is the difference between the 5800X3D and 5700X3D?
Both processors have eight cores, 16 threads, a 105 W default TDP and the AM4 socket. The 5800X3D has higher listed base and boost clocks. AMD describes its cache as 96 MB of L3 cache, while its 5700X3D announcement gives 100 MB of total cache; those labels are not identical, so the figures should not be treated as a like-for-like measurement.

How much faster is the 5800X3D for gaming?
Tom’s Hardware measured the 5800X3D at an average 9% gaming lead over the 5700X3D in its 1080p review suite in 2024. In that same launch-era comparison, the 5800X3D cost 35% more. The benchmark’s game selection, test system and prices define those figures; the review cautions that performance gaps vary by game and GPU. The practical question is whether the games you play are likely to benefit from the faster CPU and whether your GPU and settings leave room for a CPU performance difference. If your priority is strong gaming performance per dollar on a system you already own, the 5700X3D is the value-oriented choice. If you play CPU-sensitive games and can buy a verified 5800X3D for a small local premium, its measured lead may make sense.

Which used CPU is the better value?
Compare the delivered prices available where you live—not launch prices or old listings. Include shipping, seller reputation, return protection and the condition of each chip. There is no established October 2026 country-specific fair price or universal premium threshold in the available price evidence.

Price observations from previous years are context, not a live market check. Tom’s Hardware reported on August 11, 2025 that the 5700X3D was largely absent from major US retailers and cited used eBay listings starting at $205 at that time; it also said the 5800X3D had been discontinued. Separately, a Reddit user gave local used examples of about $250 for the 5700X3D and $370 for the 5800X3D on July 7, 2026. That is one person’s anecdote, not a market average. Check motherboard support and cooling before buying
AMD lists the 5800X3D for AM4 motherboards using X570, X470, B550, B450 and A520 chipsets. That list does not tell you whether your specific board revision supports the CPU or whether its installed BIOS is new enough. Check the motherboard maker’s CPU-support page and BIOS requirements for your exact board before ordering. AMD announced the 5700X3D as an AM4 processor; confirm its support on the same board-specific page rather than assuming every AM4 board works.
For the 5800X3D, AMD specifies a 90°C maximum operating temperature (Tjmax), says a thermal solution is not included and recommends liquid cooling for optimal performance. Check that your existing cooler is compatible and suitable; do not assume a cooler comes with a used CPU. The 5700X3D announcement specifies 105 W TDP, but does not provide an equivalent product-page cooler recommendation. How to vet a used AM4 CPU
- Confirm the exact model. Match the SKU in the listing to the model printed on the processor’s heat spreader; do not rely on a listing title alone.
- Ask for clear photos. Request close, well-lit images of the chip and its pins so you can inspect for visible damage before paying.
- Check the return terms. Confirm what happens if the processor arrives damaged, does not match the listing or fails to operate.
- Verify board and BIOS compatibility. Use the motherboard maker’s support page for your exact model and revision before removing your current CPU.
- Test after installation. Check for a stable boot and stable operation under load. A brief successful boot alone does not establish long-term reliability.
These are buyer precautions, not evidence that used 5800X3D or 5700X3D processors have a particular failure rate. No verified used-chip failure-rate statistic is established here.
