Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack vs. Standard: Which Plan Is Worth It?

Standard covers Nintendo’s base online service and NES, SNES, and Game Boy libraries. Expansion Pack costs $30 more for an individual or $45 more for a family plan in the US, adding classic systems, select DLC, and Switch 2-only benefits. Here is how to decide based on your games, hardware, and household accounts.

For US subscribers, Standard is the better value if you mainly need online play and the base Nintendo Switch Online services. Expansion Pack is worth the extra cost when you will use its additional classic-game libraries, included select DLC or upgrade packs, or Switch 2-only benefits. The annual premium is $30 for one account and $45 for a family membership. Your console, the number of participating accounts, and the specific games your household will play matter more than the tier name.

Price difference at a glance

Nintendo’s current US annual prices are shown below. They are US-dollar prices and can differ in other countries, so check Nintendo’s local price table before subscribing.

Membership Standard Expansion Pack Extra per year
Individual $19.99 $49.99 $30.00
Family $34.99 $79.99 $45.00

The individual Expansion Pack price is $30 higher each year. For a family membership, the premium is $45 annually. Those are the amounts you must justify with the additional libraries and content; the base online service is included in both tiers.

What the family prices mean per account

A family membership can cover up to eight accounts in the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, subject to Nintendo’s group and service rules. If all eight eligible accounts actually participate, the listed price works out to about $4.37 per account per year for Standard ($34.99 divided by eight) or about $10 per account per year for Expansion Pack ($79.99 divided by eight). Those are arithmetic averages, not separate Nintendo prices. If only one or two people use the membership, the family plan may not be the economical choice.

What Standard includes

Standard provides Nintendo Switch Online’s base services on compatible Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 games. Nintendo describes the membership as providing access to many online services on both systems. The exact requirements remain game-specific: a title must support Nintendo Switch Online features, and some games or modes can have separate conditions.

Online play

For games that require Nintendo Switch Online for online multiplayer or other network features, Standard supplies the required membership. This is the core reason most players subscribe. Expansion Pack does not create a different class of online play; it includes the same base service and adds content on top.

Classic libraries in the base tier

Standard includes Nintendo’s NES, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and Game Boy classic-game libraries. The available catalog is controlled by Nintendo and can change, so consult the current library listing rather than assuming every historical release is included or will remain available indefinitely.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Save Data Cloud and other services

Standard includes Save Data Cloud for most compatible games, along with Nintendo Music and other services listed in Nintendo’s current comparison. Save Data Cloud is not universal: compatibility is determined by the game. Check a game’s support information if cloud backup is important to you.

What Expansion Pack adds

Expansion Pack includes every Standard benefit, then adds more classic libraries and access to selected downloadable content or upgrade packs under Nintendo’s stated conditions. It is not a separate online network and it does not turn every Nintendo game into an included title.

Additional classic systems

Nintendo’s comparison lists Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis, and Virtual Boy collections among the Expansion Pack additions. Nintendo also identifies GameCube Classics as a Switch 2 exclusive. The catalog for each service is changeable; use Nintendo’s current library pages to verify whether a particular game is available in your region before upgrading.

Included DLC and upgrade packs

Examples of select content listed as Expansion Pack benefits include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass and Animal Crossing: New Horizons – Happy Home Paradise. Nintendo’s terms require you to own the applicable full game to use its add-on content. The membership grants access while the required Expansion Pack membership and other conditions are active; it is not permanent ownership of the DLC. If the membership ends, access supplied through the membership can end as well, even though your base game remains yours.

Because Nintendo describes the benefit as selected DLC and upgrade packs, do not treat Expansion Pack as an all-you-can-download game or add-on library. Check the current plan comparison for the exact included items and eligibility.

Switch 2 changes the calculation

Some of the most distinctive Expansion Pack benefits are tied specifically to Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo marks GameChat, GameCube – Nintendo Classics, and select upgrade packs as Switch 2-only. A player using only the original Nintendo Switch cannot receive value from those platform-specific features.

GameCube Classics

GameCube Classics require Switch 2. Nintendo also says the optional Nintendo Switch 2 GameCube controller offered to Nintendo Switch Online members is compatible only with Switch 2. The controller is an accessory, not a subscription requirement. It makes sense only if you own Switch 2 and want a more authentic way to play that library; purchasing it does not make Expansion Pack worthwhile by itself.

GameChat and upgrade packs

If your household has Switch 2, identify which included upgrade packs or communication features you can actually use. If everyone plays on the original Switch, remove Switch 2-only benefits from your value calculation and focus on the classic libraries and DLC that work on your hardware.

When Standard is the right choice

You mainly need online multiplayer

Choose Standard when the membership’s purpose is playing compatible games online, backing up supported saves, or using the NES, SNES, and Game Boy services. Paying another $30 for an individual plan does not improve those base functions.

You rarely play retro games

If the added Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, Genesis, Virtual Boy, or GameCube catalogs would sit unused, their presence does not create practical value. A lower-priced Standard membership leaves the money available for games your household will actually play.

You use the original Switch only

Original-Switch households cannot use Switch 2-only benefits. Standard is especially compelling when no one owns Switch 2 and the included DLC does not match the games you already own.

You are subscribing for one account

At $19.99 per year, Standard individual is the least expensive way to obtain the base service in the US. Expansion Pack individual costs $49.99, so the added libraries or DLC must be worth at least $30 to that one player over the year.

When Expansion Pack can be worth the premium

You will play the added libraries regularly

Expansion Pack’s strongest case is sustained use of its additional classic systems. Make a short list of the games you intend to play, then verify that they are in the current regional catalog. A long theoretical list of possible classics is weaker evidence than a few titles you will actually launch.

You already own eligible games with included DLC

If you own Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or Animal Crossing: New Horizons and would otherwise buy the listed add-on separately, the membership may replace that purchase while your subscription remains active. Remember that the full game is required and access follows Nintendo’s membership conditions.

Your household has several active players

With multiple participating accounts, the family plan spreads the annual premium across users. Expansion Pack family costs $45 more than Standard family, not $30. It becomes easier to justify when several people will use the added libraries or eligible DLC rather than one purchaser sharing a benefit no one else wants.

You own Switch 2 and want its exclusive services

Switch 2 owners can evaluate GameCube Classics, GameChat, and eligible upgrade packs. Those benefits are unavailable on the original Switch, so they can materially change the decision for a Switch 2 household.

A practical decision method

  1. Count the accounts that will actually use the membership. Include only Nintendo Accounts in the family group that meet Nintendo’s requirements and will play or use the service.
  2. Identify your hardware. Mark whether each regular player uses the original Switch, Switch 2, or both. Remove Switch 2-only benefits from the calculation for original-Switch players.
  3. List specific additions. Write down the classic systems, games, DLC, or upgrade packs you expect to use. Check Nintendo’s current catalog and regional eligibility.
  4. Compare the premium. The relevant hurdle is $30 per year for an individual or $45 per year for a family membership. Ask whether the listed additions justify that amount for your actual users.
  5. Check ownership requirements. For included DLC, confirm that the household owns the required full game. A membership does not substitute for the base game.
  6. Choose the least expensive tier that covers those needs. If your list consists only of base online play, cloud saves for compatible games, Nintendo Music, and the Standard libraries, select Standard. If the list contains recurring use of Expansion Pack additions, select Expansion Pack.

Family membership: savings and limitations

The family membership covers the purchaser’s Nintendo Account family group, up to eight accounts. It is not an unrestricted code that can be handed to any collection of unrelated accounts; members must fit Nintendo’s family-group and service rules.

At the listed US prices, Standard family is $15 more than Standard individual, while Expansion Pack family is $30 more than Expansion Pack individual. The family option can therefore be efficient even with a small household, but only if the additional accounts will use the service. Eight accounts that never open the added libraries do not make Expansion Pack valuable merely because the arithmetic looks inexpensive.

Questions to ask before buying family

  • How many accounts are currently in the Nintendo Account family group?
  • How many of those accounts will play online or use the classic libraries?
  • Which users own the full games needed for the included DLC?
  • Does anyone have Switch 2 and a reason to use its exclusive benefits?
  • Will the same people remain in the group for the full annual term?

Changing tiers and managing renewal

Moving from Standard to Expansion Pack

Nintendo says a Standard individual membership can be changed to an Expansion Pack individual or family membership, and a Standard family plan can be changed to an Expansion Pack family plan. A remaining-time discount may apply under Nintendo’s rules. The exact amount depends on the account and remaining term, so review the subscription settings and Nintendo’s current instructions before confirming the transaction.

Moving from Expansion Pack to Standard

An active Expansion Pack membership cannot be changed directly to Standard. After the Expansion Pack term ends, you can choose a Standard plan then. Plan around the renewal date if you know you will not use the premium benefits for another year.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Free trial limits

Nintendo’s free trial is a way to test Standard services, not Expansion Pack content. It does not include Expansion Pack-exclusive libraries or DLC, and an account with an active individual or family membership cannot redeem it. Nintendo says the trial converts to a one-month, auto-renewing membership at the then-current price unless automatic renewal is turned off by the end of the trial. Check the renewal setting before the trial expires if you do not want that charge.

Catalog, regional, and ownership caveats

  • Prices vary by country. The figures in this article are current US annual prices in USD; they are not worldwide prices.
  • Catalogs can change. Nintendo’s classic-game and included-content lists are live catalogs. Verify availability for your region and plan before purchasing.
  • Membership access is not ownership. Included DLC and upgrade packs remain tied to an active Expansion Pack membership and Nintendo’s conditions.
  • Base-game ownership matters. For the listed add-ons, you must own the applicable full game.
  • Hardware matters. GameCube Classics, GameChat, and some upgrade packs are marked as Switch 2-only.
  • Cloud saves are not universal. Save Data Cloud applies to most compatible games, not every title.

Examples by player type

Single-player original-Switch owner

You play online occasionally, use the NES and SNES libraries, and do not own the listed DLC games. Standard individual is the rational default. Expansion Pack would add systems and content you have not identified as using.

Two-account household with one Switch 2

Compare the two users’ actual plans. If the Switch 2 player wants GameCube Classics and both people will use additional libraries, Expansion Pack family may justify its $45 annual premium. If only one person wants those features, compare the cost of an individual plan with the family plan and consider whether both accounts need membership access.

Family that owns Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

Expansion Pack can be attractive if several family members regularly play and would use the Booster Course Pass. Confirm that the full game is owned on the relevant accounts and understand that the add-on access follows the active membership.

Retro enthusiast without Switch 2

Expansion Pack can still make sense for Nintendo 64, Game Boy Advance, Genesis, or Virtual Boy libraries. GameCube Classics and other Switch 2-only benefits should not influence the decision unless the household plans to use Switch 2.

Bottom line: which plan should you buy?

Buy Standard for the lower-cost base service when compatible online play, Save Data Cloud for supported games, Nintendo Music, and the NES, SNES, and Game Boy libraries meet your needs. Buy Expansion Pack when you can name the added classic libraries, eligible DLC or upgrade packs, or Switch 2-only benefits that you will use enough to justify an additional $30 per individual year or $45 per family year in the US.

Recheck Nintendo’s current comparison, catalog, regional price, and subscription terms at the time of purchase. The right tier is determined by actual use, not by the number of features listed on the plan page.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
