Sometimes. Many Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 games require a Nintendo Switch Online membership for online multiplayer, but the rule is set by each game. Nintendo identifies Fortnite as an example that works online without a membership, and says a small number of other titles do too. Check the game’s Nintendo eShop listing or Nintendo product page before you subscribe.
What Nintendo Switch Online actually pays for
Nintendo Switch Online is Nintendo’s membership service for online features in supported games. In a game that requires it, the subscription is the extra requirement between having an internet connection and joining an online race, match or co-op session. Nintendo’s current examples include Mario Kart World, Splatoon 3, Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The requirement applies to online multiplayer and other online functions identified by the individual game. It is not a blanket fee for every internet-connected activity on a Switch. A game can have its own account, server or free-to-play rules in addition to Nintendo’s membership requirement, so read the game’s description rather than assuming that one rule covers the entire system.
Can you play Switch online without Nintendo Switch Online?
Yes, but only when the particular title allows it. Nintendo explicitly says that some games, including Fortnite, can be played online without a Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo also describes no-membership online multiplayer as available in a small number of titles, so this is an exception rather than the normal rule for paid multiplayer games.

- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Do not use a game’s price, genre or free-to-play label as your only test. The reliable test is the game’s own listing:
- Open the game’s page in Nintendo eShop, or open its Nintendo product page on Nintendo’s website.
- Look for the online-play or Nintendo Switch Online requirement in the feature and purchase information.
- Check the exact edition and platform. A Switch 2 version, an upgrade pack or a different regional listing can have different feature notes.
- If you own a physical copy released after September 18, 2018, read the online requirements printed on the back of the box as well.
Nintendo says these listings identify whether membership is required. Because exceptions can change and eligibility is title-specific, verify the game immediately before buying a subscription.
What you need besides the membership
A Nintendo Switch Online subscription does not replace the basic technical requirements for online play. Nintendo says you need both a Nintendo Account and internet access. The account must be the one that holds, or is covered by, the membership.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Nintendo Account: The account signs in to Nintendo’s online service and must be covered by an individual or family membership.
- Internet connection: Your Switch or Switch 2 must be connected to the internet. The membership cannot provide the connection itself.
- The game and its updates: You still need the game and any required software update, plus any separate account the publisher requires.
- Smart device for voice chat: Nintendo says the Nintendo Switch App and a compatible smart device are needed only for in-game voice-chat features. They are not a general prerequisite for online multiplayer.
Having several profiles on one console does not automatically give every profile online access. Coverage follows Nintendo Accounts, not the physical console. Each account must have its own individual membership or belong to the Nintendo Account family group covered by a family plan.

How much is Nintendo Switch Online?
The following are Nintendo’s US prices listed in its current price table, accessed October 13, 2026. Prices and availability vary by country and can change, so readers outside the United States should check the local Nintendo eShop or Nintendo pricing page.
| Plan | Term | US price | Who it covers |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard individual | 1 month | $3.99 | One Nintendo Account |
| Standard individual | 3 months | $7.99 | One Nintendo Account |
| Standard individual | 12 months | $19.99 | One Nintendo Account |
| Standard family | 12 months | $34.99 | Up to eight Nintendo Accounts in one Nintendo Account family group |
| Expansion Pack individual | 12 months | $49.99 | One Nintendo Account |
| Expansion Pack family | 12 months | $79.99 | Up to eight Nintendo Accounts in one Nintendo Account family group |
The $3.99, $7.99 and $19.99 figures are the standard individual membership’s one-, three- and 12-month options. The standard family membership is a 12-month product, not a monthly family subscription. Nintendo’s table lists the Expansion Pack prices as 12-month plans as well.
Individual or family membership?
An individual plan is tied to one Nintendo Account. It is usually the straightforward choice when one person needs online access and no other accounts need coverage.
A family plan can cover as many as eight accounts, provided those accounts are members of the same Nintendo Account family group. The accounts do not have to be separate profiles on one Switch, and sharing a console alone does not create family coverage. Before purchasing, confirm that every intended player has been added to the correct family group and that each person signs in with the covered account.

- This model includes battery life of approximately 4.5 - 9 hours.
- The battery life will depend on the games you play. For instance, the battery will last approximately 5.5 hours for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (games sold separately)
- Model number HAC 001( 01)
For a household with several players, compare the one-time 12-month family price with the number of accounts that would otherwise need individual memberships. Do not choose family solely because multiple profiles appear on one console; the Nintendo Account relationship is what determines eligibility.
Do you need the Expansion Pack?
No. The standard Nintendo Switch Online plan is the membership requirement for supported online multiplayer. Expansion Pack is a higher tier that adds extra content; it is not a prerequisite for joining a normal online match in a game that accepts the standard plan.
Nintendo describes Expansion Pack benefits as additional classic-game libraries and selected downloadable content. Some benefits, including GameCube Classics and selected Switch 2 game upgrade packs, apply to Nintendo Switch 2. Included downloadable content still requires the full base game, and access depends on keeping the relevant membership active.
| If your goal is… | Membership level to investigate | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Online multiplayer in a supported Switch or Switch 2 game | Standard Nintendo Switch Online | This is the basic online-membership requirement; verify the game’s listing. |
| Classic-game libraries or selected included DLC | Expansion Pack | These are additional tier benefits, not necessary for standard online play. |
| Selected GameCube Classics or Switch 2 upgrade-pack benefits | Expansion Pack on Nintendo Switch 2, where offered | Nintendo identifies these as platform- and title-dependent benefits. |
Buying Expansion Pack solely to unlock multiplayer is therefore unnecessary unless the specific game or content you want separately calls for one of its included benefits.

How the seven-day free trial works
Eligible Nintendo Account users can claim a seven-day individual trial once per account. Nintendo requires a payment method when the trial starts because the enrollment is set up for automatic renewal. Turn off automatic renewal before the seven days end if you do not want the paid membership to begin.
The trial is for the individual service and does not include benefits reserved for Expansion Pack. Check the renewal setting and the end date in your Nintendo Account after activating it; deleting the game or removing a payment method from the console is not the same as disabling automatic renewal.
A practical decision process before you pay
- Name the exact game. “Playing Switch online” is too broad to determine eligibility. Identify the title, edition and, when relevant, whether you are using Switch or Switch 2.
- Read the listing. In Nintendo eShop, search for the game and open its product page. Find the online-play requirement. Nintendo’s product pages are also an option when you are researching before opening the eShop.
- Check the package. For physical games released after September 18, 2018, read the online information on the back of the box.
- Separate internet from membership. Confirm that your console has internet access and that the playing Nintendo Account—not merely another profile on the console—is covered.
- Select the smallest plan that meets the need. Choose a standard individual term for one account, a standard family plan for up to eight family-group accounts, or Expansion Pack only when its extra libraries or DLC matter to you.
- Review renewal terms. If you use the seven-day trial, disable automatic renewal before it expires unless you intend to continue at the applicable price.
Common situations and what they mean
“I have Wi-Fi, so why is multiplayer locked?”
Internet access is only one prerequisite. If the game’s listing says Nintendo Switch Online is required, the account joining the session must also have standard membership or be covered by a family plan. Check the account currently selected in the game and the membership status for that account.

Not automatically. Two console profiles can belong to different Nintendo Accounts. Give each player an individual membership or place both accounts in the same Nintendo Account family group covered by a family plan.

- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
“The game is free, so why would it ask for a membership?”
Game price does not establish Nintendo’s online rule. Some games, such as Fortnite, are named by Nintendo as exceptions, while other titles can require membership. Read the title’s listing rather than applying a general free-to-play assumption.
“Do I need Expansion Pack because the game is on Switch 2?”
Switch 2 does not turn Expansion Pack into a universal online requirement. Standard membership remains the basic online tier. Expansion Pack matters only for its additional libraries or selected DLC and upgrade-pack benefits, and those benefits are title-specific.
“Can I use voice chat without the app?”
Nintendo identifies the Nintendo Switch App and a smart device as requirements for in-game voice-chat features. That requirement is separate from the membership check for online multiplayer itself.

- Region: The prices above are US prices. Nintendo uses country-specific pricing, so a local eShop can show a different amount.
- Date: Membership prices and included content can change. The figures here come from Nintendo’s price information accessed October 13, 2026.
- Game version: Switch, Switch 2, a physical release and a digital listing can display different feature notes. Match the listing to the copy you own.
- Account coverage: Confirm the Nintendo Account family group rather than relying on the console’s profile list.
- Renewal status: A trial or existing subscription can have automatic renewal enabled. Review that setting before the next billing date.
The shortest accurate rule is: assume a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership is needed for online multiplayer unless the exact game’s Nintendo listing says otherwise. That approach catches the common requirement without incorrectly charging you for an exception.
