To play Nintendo Switch Sports together on one console, connect the Switch to a TV, choose the game’s local-play option, select the player count for the sport or mode, then follow its on-screen controller prompts. You do not need a full pair of Joy-Con for every player in every sport: the required arrangement varies. The game does not support Handheld Mode or either Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
Same-console play or LAN: which setup do you need?
| Setup | What you need | How it works |
|---|---|---|
| Same-console local play | One Nintendo Switch and compatible Joy-Con; connect the console to a TV. | Everyone plays on the same system and shares the screen. Choose the local-play option in the game. |
| Multi-console LAN play | Up to four consoles, a copy of the game on each, Ethernet cables and a wired router. A network switch may be needed if the router lacks enough ports. | One console creates a room and the others join over the wired network. Nintendo’s LAN setup allows up to two players per console, up to eight total; the selected sport determines how many can participate at once. |
For a typical two-player session in the living room, use same-console local play. LAN is a separate option for groups with multiple consoles; its eight-player overall limit is not a same-console player limit. See Nintendo’s LAN setup instructions for the wired network procedure.

How to set up local multiplayer on one Switch
- Connect the console to a TV. Put the Switch in its dock and use TV Mode. Nintendo recommends TV Mode on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model or Nintendo Switch 2.
- Start the game and choose local play. Select the local-play option for playing together on the same system.
- Choose the player count offered for your sport or mode. The available count and controller arrangement can vary, so do not assume every sport uses the same setup.
- Assign controllers using the on-screen diagrams. Follow the game’s prompts to pair or assign each Joy-Con to a player. Use the configuration shown for the selected activity rather than a universal button sequence.
- Prepare a safe play area. Attach wrist straps when appropriate, clear the space around each player and keep enough room to swing or move safely.
Nintendo describes the game as supporting play with friends and family on the same system. Its product page lists eight sports: Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, Chambara, Basketball and Golf. Player counts and controller arrangements are mode-specific.
How many Joy-Con do you need?
There is no single controller count that applies to every sport and mode. Nintendo lists paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, and a Joy-Con with the Leg Strap among the supported play styles. Check the game’s controller prompt after selecting the activity; it shows the setup to use. Nintendo says a Switch can connect up to eight wireless controllers in most circumstances, but that is a console connection limit, not a promise that a particular sport supports eight players.

- Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
- Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
- Single Joy-Con: Some activities use one controller per player. In Tennis, for example, a single Joy-Con serves as a racket.
- Paired Joy-Con: Some play styles use a pair. Use the assignment screen to see whether the selected mode calls for one.
- Leg Strap: This is an optional Soccer control style where supported, not a general requirement for local multiplayer.
Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ covers supported controllers and play styles. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible with the game.
What changes from sport to sport?
Controller needs and how players take turns or play at once depend on the activity and mode. Nintendo’s examples illustrate why it is better to follow the game’s prompt than to plan around one controller rule for everything:
- Bowling: Players who each have a Joy-Con can roll at the same time rather than wait for turns.
- Tennis: A single Joy-Con acts as a racket, and the sport supports playing with a friend on the same system.
- Soccer Shoot-Out: Two people can play on one Switch; each gets five attempts. A Joy-Con attached to the Leg Strap can be used to kick.
- Volleyball, Badminton and Chambara: These use Joy-Con motion controls.
These examples do not establish a universal player count or controller layout for all modes. Select the sport first and use its on-screen setup instructions.
When to use the Soccer Leg Strap
The Leg Strap is for the Soccer kicking control style when the selected mode supports it. You can choose the standard Joy-Con setup instead; the strap is not needed just to play local multiplayer. Nintendo says Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap. The strap is included with the game package according to Nintendo’s product and support information; standalone replacement availability is not stated there.

How to set up LAN play with multiple consoles
Use LAN only when players will use more than one Switch. Nintendo’s wired LAN instructions specify up to four consoles and up to two players per console, for up to eight total across the setup. The sport still determines how many players can take part at once.
- Connect each console to the same wired router with an Ethernet cable. Use a network switch if you need more router ports.
- Start the game on each console and highlight Play with Friends.
- On the host console, hold L and R, then click and hold the Left Stick to select LAN Play.
- On the host, choose one or two players, select the users, and create a room.
- On each other console, use the same LAN Play path and join the host’s room.
For the detailed setup, consult Nintendo’s LAN instructions.
