Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIn a bullet heaven game, you usually survive by moving through a crowded arena while attacks, upgrades, and enemy waves reshape the run. The best first steps are to learn whether your game aims for you, keep enemies positioned where your weapons can reach them, and choose upgrades that support a plan rather than grabbing every appealing option.
“Bullet heaven,” “survivor-like,” and “auto-shooter” are overlapping labels, not a strict rulebook. Games can differ in aiming, wave structure, and how you assemble a build, so treat the advice below as a way to learn a particular game—not a universal winning recipe.
What is a bullet heaven game?
Epic Games Store contributor Steven T. Wright describes a survivor game—also called a bullet heaven, auto-shooter, or wave shooter—as a challenge to survive intensifying waves of attackers in a closed arena. A common loop is to move around, collect experience or other resources, and strengthen a build as threats increase. The details vary: some games largely automate attacks, while others ask you to aim, shop, or handle discrete waves. Epic’s overview of survivor games discusses the category, while a Steam curator collection uses “Survivors-genre games, aka Bullet Heaven, Auto Shooters, Auto Battlers.” That store-community wording is useful for finding games, not a formal genre standard.

Move to avoid danger and control enemy position
In an automatic-attacking game, movement is more than dodging. You may need to route around enemies, draw them into the area your weapons can cover, and collect experience or useful drops when it is safe. For Vampire Survivors specifically, RogueWiki’s beginner guide recommends moving rather than standing still and steering enemies so they stay within weapon range. That is game-specific advice, not proof that one movement pattern works across the genre.

- NUMBER OF PLAYERS AND AVERAGE PLAYTIME: This action-packed puzzle game is designed for 1 to 4 players and is suitable for ages 12 and older. Average playtime is approximately 15 minutes..Target gender: unisex
If attacks require manual aim, coordinate your movement with the direction you want to target. Keep an escape route in mind rather than turning toward a target and allowing the crowd to close around you. The relevant balance between dodging, aiming, and collecting depends on the controls and threats in your chosen game.
Build around upgrades that work together
A build is a set of weapons and other upgrades that complement one another. Before committing to a particular combination, check the game’s own requirements: a recipe from one title may not apply in another, and even familiar games can change their rules over time.

In Vampire Survivors, plan for specific evolutions
RogueWiki’s beginner guide to Vampire Survivors, last updated August 12, 2026, says evolutions require a max-level weapon and its specific passive item. It recommends planning a small number of achievable evolutions instead of trying to assemble every possible combination. Treat that as the guide’s practical recommendation, not a universal optimization result. The guide says it covers the June 2026 patch 1.15; check the current in-game requirements if a later update has changed them.
In shop-based games, buy for the run in front of you
Brotato gives players a shop between waves and supports up to six weapons, according to Nintendo’s UK Switch download-software listing. Consider your character, the weapons already in your run, and the threats you need to handle before spending. A purchase that fills a gap may be more useful than adding another item simply because it looks powerful.

There is no evidence here for a genre-wide rule to always prioritize damage, or to avoid defensive upgrades. Make choices based on what your current run lacks and what the game’s systems reward.

A game’s pacing affects when you can safely collect, upgrade, or reposition. For example, Nintendo’s listing for the Switch version of Brotato describes waves lasting 20 to 90 seconds and runs under 30 minutes. Those are details in Nintendo’s product description for this game, not a general expectation for bullet heaven runs.

Some games emphasize survival over a timer; others divide a run into short waves with a shopping break between them. When starting a new title, check whether a wave ends automatically, whether resources persist between waves, and when upgrade decisions are offered. That tells you whether to prioritize movement and collection during combat or save decisions for a between-wave menu.
A practical first-run checklist
- Check the attack and aiming settings. Determine whether attacks are automatic, manual, or configurable; try the available control options before building habits around one mode.
- Observe what drops and what they do. Identify experience, currency, or other pickups, then collect them when the route is safe enough.
- Move with a purpose. Avoid contact, watch where enemies gather, and keep your weapons’ coverage in mind. In manual-aim games, move and aim together.
- Read upgrade descriptions and requirements. Look for weapon synergies, evolution prerequisites, character traits, and any slot limit before spending a choice.
- Adjust after each choice point. At a level-up or shop, choose for the build you can realistically complete and the immediate threats you face—not for a generic stat priority.
- Use a run to learn the game’s rhythm. Notice when waves end, when shopping or upgrade screens appear, and what tends to overwhelm your current setup.
One game to try: Brotato
Brotato is a useful example if you want to compare automatic attacks, optional manual aiming, and between-wave shopping in one game. Nintendo’s UK listing describes its Switch version as a top-down arena shooter roguelite with up to six weapons, short waves, materials used for experience, shop choices, and options to adjust enemy health, damage, and speed. It is a listing for Nintendo Switch download software; it does not establish Amazon inventory or a physical edition.
