Nintendo Switch Sports Online Multiplayer Problems: Fix Connection and Matchmaking Issues

A successful Switch internet test does not guarantee a playable Switch Sports match. Learn how to read NAT results, diagnose latency, handle errors 2618-0513 and 2618-0514, test Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and recover from repeated-disconnect restrictions.

If Nintendo Switch Sports says it cannot find opponents, drops you from matches, or shows an online connection error, first run the console’s connection test. A successful internet test only proves that the Switch reached Nintendo’s services; it does not prove that your NAT, latency, wireless stability, or another player’s network can form a peer-to-peer match.

Open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection, record the result, NAT type, download speed, and upload speed, then work through the checks below in order. Retest after each meaningful change so you can identify what actually helped.

What the connection test tells you

The Switch connection test separates basic internet access from the conditions required for multiplayer. It reports whether the console reached Nintendo’s services, your NAT type, and measured download and upload speeds. Those results are more useful than the game’s generic “unable to connect” message because they show whether the problem is a complete network failure or a matchmaking-specific failure.

Run the test and record all four results

  1. From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
  2. Select Internet.
  3. Choose Test Connection.
  4. Write down whether the test succeeded, the NAT type (A through F), download speed, and upload speed.

If the test fails entirely, fix the saved Wi-Fi or wired connection before investigating matchmaking. If it succeeds but Switch Sports cannot create or maintain a match, continue with NAT, latency, and peer-network checks.

NAT types and why opponents may not connect

NAT (network address translation) controls how devices on your home network communicate with devices outside it. Switch Sports commonly relies on peer-to-peer communication, so both players’ NAT behavior can affect whether a session forms. A good download speed cannot compensate for a NAT arrangement that blocks the required traffic.

NAT result What Nintendo’s guidance means Typical matchmaking implication
A Best condition for peer-to-peer communication Usually the easiest environment for forming matches
B Generally compatible with most other NAT types Usually works, although latency or the other player’s network can still cause failure
C May have difficulty communicating with more restrictive peers Some opponents may connect while others cannot
D Generally able to connect only with NAT type A Many peer-to-peer matches can fail
F Peer-to-peer communication could not be completed Online matchmaking is unlikely to work until the network path changes

NAT is a diagnostic clue, not a guarantee. Nintendo notes that latency can still cause matchmaking timeouts when the NAT result and speed readings look acceptable. If you fail only when inviting one friend, that friend’s NAT or local network may be involved. If every opponent fails, start with your own router, wireless link, or internet provider.

Use the error code to choose the next check

Error 2618-0514

Nintendo associates 2618-0514 with a suboptimal peer-to-peer network. Several players may have restrictive NAT, high latency, or a connection type Nintendo does not recommend. Try another suitable network, preferably cable, DSL, or fiber, and follow the matchmaking checks in this guide if the error returns.

Error 2618-0513

Error 2618-0513 usually indicates that the network is not optimal for peer-to-peer matchmaking. Nintendo lists the internet provider, connection speed, and NAT as possible factors. Retry the connection, test another suitable network, and check the NAT result. Nintendo specifically warns that a mobile hotspot or 5G service may prevent a peer-to-peer connection even when other internet activities work.

Switch Sports temporary online restriction

After repeated unexpected departures from online play, Switch Sports can temporarily prevent you from playing online. Nintendo Support explains:

“In order to provide a comfortable network play environment, the Nintendo Switch Sports game is designed to make it so it will not be possible to play online for a certain amount of time if the user disconnects multiple times during network play, regardless of whether it is intentional.”

Wait for the restriction to end before trying again. Do not leave matches early while testing, and improve the network if the disconnects were accidental. The restriction can occur whether the departures were deliberate or caused by an unstable connection.

Fix the problem in a controlled order

Change one major variable at a time and rerun Test Connection after each change. This prevents several simultaneous router changes from hiding the real cause.

1. Restart the network equipment

  1. Close Switch Sports and put the console in a stable state.
  2. Power off the modem and router.
  3. Wait for the equipment to finish shutting down, then power it back on.
  4. Wait until the modem and router show a normal internet connection.
  5. Reconnect the Switch and run System Settings > Internet > Test Connection.

A restart can clear a temporary router state, but it will not permanently change a restrictive NAT design or an overloaded internet service.

2. Improve the wireless signal

For Nintendo’s diagnostic procedure, move the Switch to within roughly 10 to 15 feet of the router and test again. Keep the console and router away from thick obstructions and obvious sources of wireless interference. A close-range test helps distinguish a weak radio link from a broader matchmaking problem.

  • If matchmaking works near the router but fails in the usual playing location, signal strength or interference is the leading suspect.
  • If the same NAT and matchmaking failure appears next to the router, focus on the router, provider, or the other player’s network.

3. Test a different network

Use another stable home broadband connection when one is available. Nintendo’s guidance favors cable, DSL, or fiber for peer-to-peer troubleshooting. Avoid treating a phone hotspot or 5G connection as an equivalent substitute: Nintendo says those services may prevent peer-to-peer connections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If a different network works, the original network is likely blocking or delaying the traffic Switch Sports needs. Ask your internet provider about NAT behavior and peer-to-peer restrictions. If the issue appears to be inside the router, ask the router manufacturer about firmware and network troubleshooting rather than applying unfamiliar settings at random.

4. Check the other player’s network

When you can connect to some opponents but not one particular friend, compare both players’ results. Have the other player run the same connection test and share the NAT type and speed readings. A restrictive NAT on either side can prevent the pair from forming a session. This pattern is different from failing to connect with every opponent, which points more strongly to your own network or provider.

5. Try the IPv6 troubleshooting branch

Nintendo includes turning off IPv6 as a troubleshooting test in some matchmaking cases. Treat it as an experiment, not a universal requirement: record the original router setting, disable IPv6 only if your router provides that option, retest Switch Sports, and restore the setting if it makes no difference or affects other devices. Router menus differ, so use the manufacturer’s instructions or support service for the exact path.

When a wired connection is worth testing

A wired test removes wireless signal and interference from the equation and can reveal whether latency is being introduced between the console and router. It is a troubleshooting method, not a guaranteed cure for restrictive NAT or an internet-provider problem.

Hardware and service requirements

  • A high-speed internet service and a working router
  • An Ethernet cable
  • A compatible Nintendo Switch dock
  • A USB-to-Ethernet (USB LAN) adapter when the dock does not have a built-in LAN port

Check which dock model you are using before buying an adapter. Nintendo specifies the USB LAN adapter for a dock without an integrated LAN port. The adapter cannot by itself change the NAT policy imposed by a router or provider.

How to use the wired test

  1. Connect the router to the dock’s LAN port, or connect the Ethernet cable to a compatible USB LAN adapter attached to the dock.
  2. Place the Switch in the dock and ensure the cable is seated at both ends.
  3. On the console, open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection.
  4. Compare the NAT type, speeds, and matchmaking behavior with your previous wireless results.

If the wired connection succeeds while Wi-Fi fails, continue using the wired path where practical or improve wireless placement and interference. If both paths show the same NAT or timeout behavior, the problem is probably beyond the radio link.

Latency matters more than a headline speed

Latency is the delay before data receives a response. In a peer-to-peer game, a connection can have adequate throughput yet still time out because responses arrive inconsistently or too slowly. Nintendo identifies weak wireless signal, interference, slow internet speeds, and slow responses from network devices as possible latency sources.

Nintendo’s latency guidance uses 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload as comparison figures. They are troubleshooting reference points, not a guarantee of smooth Switch Sports play. A connection that exceeds those figures can still suffer from jitter, congestion, or NAT incompatibility.

Signs that latency, not raw speed, is the issue

  • The connection test succeeds, but matchmaking times out repeatedly.
  • Matches begin and then end unexpectedly.
  • Performance changes sharply when other people use the same connection.
  • Moving close to the router or switching to Ethernet improves reliability without changing the internet plan.

Run tests at the time you normally play. A result captured during a quiet period may not represent the network when other devices are streaming, downloading, or uploading.

Choose the right network test for your symptom

Symptom Most useful first test What the result suggests
Test Connection fails Reconnect the saved network, restart modem/router, then test again Basic internet access is not established; matchmaking troubleshooting is premature
Test succeeds, NAT C, D, or F Try another broadband network and ask the router/provider about NAT Peer-to-peer compatibility may be restricted
Test succeeds with A or B, but every match times out Move within 10–15 feet of the router, restart equipment, and try Ethernet Latency, interference, or router response time may be the limiting factor
Only one friend cannot connect Compare both players’ NAT results and networks The other player’s NAT or local conditions may be incompatible
2618-0513 on hotspot or 5G Try stable cable, DSL, or fiber broadband The mobile service may not support the required peer-to-peer path
2618-0514 across several players Try another network, preferably wired, then check NAT and latency One or more players may have restrictive NAT, high latency, or an unsuitable connection type
Repeated disconnect warning in Switch Sports Wait, avoid leaving matches, and stabilize the connection The game has applied a temporary online restriction

What not to conclude from a successful test

  • “The internet test passed, so matchmaking must be fine.” The test confirms service reachability but does not guarantee peer compatibility.
  • “My download speed is high, so latency cannot be the problem.” Response delay and interference can still cause timeouts.
  • “A new adapter will fix the error.” Ethernet removes Wi-Fi as a variable; it does not override NAT or provider restrictions.
  • “The game is down.” The published guidance does not establish a current Nintendo network outage or a current Switch Sports software bug. Check Nintendo’s current service information separately if every local test is normal.

A complete troubleshooting checklist

  1. Run System Settings > Internet > Test Connection.
  2. Record success or failure, NAT type, download speed, and upload speed.
  3. If the test fails, repair the saved network connection before testing the game.
  4. If it succeeds, identify whether the problem affects every opponent or only one friend.
  5. Restart the modem and router, then retest.
  6. Move the console to within 10–15 feet of the router and retest.
  7. Check for wireless interference and competing network traffic.
  8. Try a stable broadband network instead of a hotspot or 5G connection.
  9. Use Ethernet when the dock and adapter support it, then retest.
  10. Compare your NAT result with the other player’s when the failure is limited to one person.
  11. Ask the router manufacturer or internet provider about firmware, NAT, and peer-to-peer restrictions before making advanced changes.
  12. If repeated disconnects triggered a Switch Sports restriction, wait until it ends and do not abandon further matches.

When to contact your provider or router manufacturer

Contact the internet provider when another network works but your home connection does not, or when the provider controls the NAT arrangement. Contact the router manufacturer when the router’s firmware, IPv6 setting, or local configuration appears to be involved. Give support the connection-test result, NAT type, speeds, error code, whether Ethernet changed anything, and whether the failure affects one opponent or everyone. Those details are more actionable than reporting only that “online play is broken.”

Do not assume that opening ports, placing the console in a less-protected router mode, or changing multiple advanced settings is safe or necessary. Use the router maker’s documented procedure and keep a record of every setting changed so you can reverse it.

Bottom line

Start with the Switch connection test, then separate NAT compatibility from latency and wireless stability. NAT A or B is favorable but not conclusive; C, D, or F can explain peer-to-peer failures, and a hotspot or 5G connection may be unsuitable even when ordinary browsing works. Test close to the router, restart the network, try another broadband connection, and use Ethernet as an optional diagnostic. If the issue is limited to one friend, investigate both players’ networks. If repeated disconnects caused the Switch Sports restriction, wait and stabilize the connection before returning to online play.
