Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is an upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 game that brings familiar sports, new motion-controlled activities and a Wuhu Island setting together. Its marine-bike event gives it a clear Wave Race comparison, but it is not a new Wave Race game. Nintendo lists 12 activities and has scheduled the game for October 22, 2026; it is not yet released as of October 7, 2026.
What is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive, not an expansion or new edition of the 2022 Nintendo Switch Sports. Nintendo announced the new game on June 10, 2026, and lists an October 22, 2026 release date. It is therefore still upcoming as of October 7, 2026. Nintendo’s announcements describe Joy-Con 2 motion controls and a setting on Wuhu Island, the location associated with Wii Sports Resort. Nintendo’s announcement and its Japanese product page provide the confirmed details.

What sports and activities are in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
Nintendo’s Japanese product page lists these 12 motion-controlled activities:
- Tennis
- Bowling
- Archery
- Boxing
- Volleyball
- Table tennis
- Basketball
- Golf
- Thumb wrestling
- Propeller plane
- Skateboarding
- Marine bike
The lineup mixes familiar court and ball sports with activities that move beyond a conventional sports roster. Archery and boxing add new kinds of motion play, while skateboarding and flying a propeller plane broaden the leisure side of the game.

Does Nintendo Switch Sports Resort include Wave Race?
No. Nintendo lists a marine-bike activity, not a Wave Race game. The water-riding premise makes Wave Race a reasonable point of comparison, but Nintendo has not announced a revival, license or inclusion of that series. The new game’s confirmed connection is the marine-bike event itself.
How does Wuhu Island change the experience?
Wuhu Island is more than a backdrop in Nintendo’s description. Players will be able to explore it, chase dolphins, look for hibiscus flowers and collect Spocco Photos of sightseeing spots. That exploration gives the game a broader island setting than a collection of isolated sports, although the details available before release do not establish how large or open-ended the island will feel in play.

What modes and progression has Nintendo announced?
Island Crown
Nintendo has announced an offline ranked mode called Island Crown. In Nintendo’s September 15, 2026 announcement, the company said: “A new offline Island Crown mode lets you rise through the ranks in each sport to challenge Island Champions and even Island Legends.” This offers a solo progression route that does not depend on online play.
Spocco Points and customization
Nintendo says players can earn Spocco Points by playing any sport in any mode, then exchange them for character customization. The announcement does not specify the full range of items or whether any other progression systems are included.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
Nintendo says online play or some features require an internet connection and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. That does not mean every mode requires a subscription: Island Crown is specifically described as offline. Nintendo has not detailed every feature that will be available online.

The similarly named 2022 game is a separate title for the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s UK page says it released on April 29, 2022; after updates, that game’s roster includes Football, Tennis, Badminton, Basketball, Volleyball, Bowling, Golf and Chambara. Those are not the confirmed activity list for Sports Resort.

Accessory details should not be carried over by assumption, either. Nintendo confirms the Leg Strap works for soccer in the 2022 game, but the available official information does not establish that Sports Resort supports or requires it. Nintendo Support also says Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with that older Leg Strap.
Is Nintendo Switch Sports Resort worth buying?
For someone who enjoyed Wii Sports Resort, the strongest reasons to be interested are the return to Wuhu Island, the mix of familiar sports and unusual activities, and the announced island exploration and offline ranking mode. The marine-bike activity may also appeal to players who want a water-racing flavor, with the important caveat that it is not Wave Race.
That is a case for watching the game, not a verdict on its quality. It has not released as of October 7, 2026, so its controls, variety, progression and replay value have not yet been independently assessed. The game requires Nintendo Switch 2; Nintendo lists both download and packaged editions in Japan, but that does not establish availability or pricing in every market.
