The key difference is the hardware: Nintendo Switch Sports is a Nintendo Switch game controlled with Joy-Con, while Wii Sports Resort is a Wii game that requires Wii MotionPlus or a Wii Remote Plus. Their sports lineups and online features differ, too. Choose based first on the console and controllers you have, then on which activities and play options you want.

Which consoles and controllers do they use?
Nintendo Switch Sports
Nintendo Switch Sports runs on Nintendo Switch and uses Joy-Con controllers. Nintendo’s US product page also lists Switch 2 support, with behavior consistent with Switch. The current Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ says the game cannot be played in Handheld Mode and does not support Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 Pro Controllers, so check that your console and controller setup is suitable before buying.
Wii Sports Resort
Wii Sports Resort runs on Wii, not Switch. Nintendo specifies a Wii Remote Plus or a Wii Remote fitted with the Wii MotionPlus accessory. The games are not interchangeable versions for different generations of one console: each needs its own system and motion-control hardware.

How do their sports and activities differ?
Nintendo lists eight activities for Nintendo Switch Sports: Basketball, Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton, and Chambara, its swordplay activity. For Wii Sports Resort, Nintendo’s product page highlights fencing, jet-skiing, flying-disc challenges, and other island activities, but does not provide a complete list in the reviewed page. Those examples show the distinct Resort setting; they are not a full item-by-item comparison.
Nintendo describes Nintendo Switch Sports as a continuation of the Wii Sports series, but it is not a promise that every Wii Sports Resort activity appears in the newer game. Compare the specific activities Nintendo lists rather than assuming the lineups match.
Rank #2
- Swing, kick, spike, and bowl your way to victory in 7 sports
- Play Golf, Soccer, Volleyball, Bowling, Tennis, Badminton and Chambara (swordplay)
- Motion controls will get you moving and help turn your real-world actions into in-game movements
- Use the Leg Strap accessory to kick the ball in Soccer
- Play with friends and family locally or online—in some sports, you and a friend can even team up on the same system to take on other teams online
What multiplayer and online options are listed?
Nintendo Switch Sports
Nintendo lists play for 1–4 people on one system and 1–2 online. Online play, including worldwide opponents and Pro League, requires an active Nintendo Switch Online membership. The Nintendo FAQ says players without a membership can enter a trial competition against computer opponents from Play Globally.
Wii Sports Resort
Nintendo’s product page lists 1–4 players and simultaneous multiplayer. The reviewed page does not establish the game’s current online-service status, so it is not enough to make a current online-versus-online comparison with Nintendo Switch Sports.
Rank #3
- The ultimate game that brings together 30 different sports
- Challenge your family or friends and may the best player win
- Multiple game modes available: Quick match or Tournament / Team mode or Solo
- Explore a multitude of environments! Volcano / Desert / Snowy countries

Do you need an accessory?
Leg Strap for Switch Sports
The Leg Strap is for some Soccer play, not a requirement for every sport. Nintendo says it is included with the physical edition of Nintendo Switch Sports; the digital edition is described as lower-priced, with the strap available separately. Nintendo’s FAQ says Joy-Con 2 controllers are incompatible with the Leg Strap. Edition contents and availability can vary, so check the product listing for the version you intend to buy.
MotionPlus for Wii Sports Resort
For Wii Sports Resort, check that you have a Wii Remote Plus or a Wii Remote with Wii MotionPlus. If buying a used copy, verify the listing’s actual contents and condition: Nintendo’s product page does not establish what accessories a second-hand seller includes.
Rank #4
- 6 sports: Baseball, run's jump, goalkeeper, tennis, bowling & rafting.
- 20 characters to customize (change your name, outfit, accessories & hair)
- Varied game modes - Solo or multiplayer for up to 8 players.
- More than 15 environments and tons of unlockable items.
Which game should you choose?
- Choose Nintendo Switch Sports if you own a compatible Switch setup, want the eight activities Nintendo lists, or want its documented online features and are prepared to meet the Nintendo Switch Online requirement for online play.
- Choose Wii Sports Resort if you own a Wii and MotionPlus-capable controls, and want its island activities such as fencing, jet-skiing, and flying-disc challenges.
- Check hardware before buying either. The Wii game is not playable on Switch, and Switch Sports does not use Wii remotes.
