Nintendo Switch Warranty, Repair Fees, and Replacement Policy Explained

In the U.S. and Canada, a Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, Switch OLED model, and eligible Nintendo accessories generally receive one year of warranty protection for manufacturing defects. Nintendo decides whether an eligible claim is repaired or replaced. Damage from drops, liquids, accidents, unauthorized work, or modifications is outside the warranty, although Nintendo may offer paid service. The process is regional, requires proof of purchase for warranty review, and starts with an official service request—not by mailing the console unannounced.

What the Nintendo Switch warranty covers

Nintendo’s U.S./Canada service information says its hardware products, accessories, and Nintendo-published games have a warranty lasting one year from the purchase date. The formal warranty describes this as twelve months for the original purchaser. Coverage is for defects in materials and workmanship, rather than every problem that can occur during ownership.

Products and warranty period

  • Console hardware: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model hardware are handled under Nintendo’s hardware service terms.
  • Accessories: Nintendo accessories, including Joy-Con controllers, fall within the same service framework, subject to the applicable product terms.
  • Published games: Nintendo-published games are included in the one-year statement, although a game that is physically damaged is not automatically a warranty defect.
  • Starting date: The period runs from the date of purchase, not from the date you first activate or register the console.

Proof of purchase is important

Nintendo asks for proof of purchase from an authorized retailer when it determines whether a U.S./Canada service request qualifies for warranty treatment. Keep the dated receipt, order confirmation, or other retailer documentation that identifies the product and purchase date. Without acceptable documentation, Nintendo may be unable to verify that the twelve-month period applies.

What the warranty excludes

The warranty is aimed at factory defects. Nintendo’s service page specifically says physical damage is not covered, while noting that paid service may still be possible. The formal limitations also exclude or can void coverage for several other situations:

#1 Best Overall
Nintendo Neon Purple/Neon Orange Joy-Con (L-R) - Switch
  • Two Joy Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as 1 game controller when attached to the Joy Con grip
  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two player action in supported games
  • Each Joy Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible
  • Damage caused by an accident, negligence, unreasonable use, or other mishandling.
  • Liquid or moisture damage.
  • Unauthorized parts, repairs, or servicing.
  • Unauthorized modifications, tampering, or alterations.
  • Commercial use where the product was not intended for that use.
  • An altered, removed, or unreadable serial number.

A console that stops powering on because of an internal manufacturing defect is a different case from one with a cracked shell or liquid indicator. Describe the symptoms accurately in the service request; concealing physical damage can complicate inspection and eligibility.

Will Nintendo repair or replace your Switch?

Nintendo’s factory-service terms give Nintendo discretion to repair or replace the product. A warranty claim therefore does not guarantee that your original console will come back, nor does a non-covered claim guarantee a replacement offer. The outcome is determined after Nintendo receives and evaluates the product.

Question How Nintendo’s policy works
Warranty eligibility Generally limited to defects in materials and workmanship during the applicable one-year period, with proof of purchase for review.
Physical or liquid damage Outside the warranty; Nintendo may still offer paid service depending on the product and diagnosis.
Repair versus replacement Nintendo chooses whether to repair or replace under its factory-service terms.
Replacement condition Nintendo may use refurbished parts or a refurbished product that meets functional new-product specifications.
Cosmetic condition A refurbished item can have minor cosmetic defects while still meeting the stated functional specification.
Data outcome Saved data may not be recoverable during service; Nintendo does not promise that data will be preserved.
Turnaround and shipping Timing and shipping instructions depend on the service request and region; the cited U.S./Canada pages do not publish a universal turnaround.

What “refurbished” means in this context

Nintendo reserves the right to use refurbished parts or refurbished products. Its terms say those parts or products must meet functional new-product specifications, but they may show minor cosmetic imperfections. If you need an identical serial-numbered unit or a particular cosmetic condition, factory service does not promise either.

Warranty on the serviced product

When a repaired or replaced product ships back, Nintendo provides a service warranty that starts on the shipping date. It lasts for 100 days or the remainder of the original manufacturer warranty, whichever is longer. This is a service warranty for the returned product, not a reset of the original warranty clock.

How much does Nintendo Switch repair cost?

U.S. and Canada

Nintendo says factory service may be available for a fee after the warranty expires or when the fault is not covered. The U.S./Canada pages used for this policy do not publish one universal fee table. Product-specific pricing is handled through the service process, so the amount can depend on the item and Nintendo’s diagnosis. Do not assume that a price quoted for one model, component, or region applies to another.

Because Nintendo has not published a single current U.S./Canada schedule on those pages, a precise out-of-warranty figure cannot be stated here. Start a service request to learn what Nintendo will charge for your particular console or accessory before authorizing paid work.

Published UK maximums (dated 1 October 2021)

Nintendo UK published maximum out-of-warranty prices effective 1 October 2021. The schedule says the maximum can be lower depending on diagnosis and that the cap applies per item. These are UK figures, not current U.S. or Canadian prices:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item Published UK maximum Qualification
Nintendo Switch console £120 Maximum out-of-warranty price in the dated UK schedule; a lower charge may apply after diagnosis.
Nintendo Switch – OLED Model console £190.50 Maximum in the same 1 October 2021 UK schedule.
Nintendo Switch Lite £108 Maximum in the same UK schedule; not a U.S./Canada price.
One Joy-Con controller £26.40 Per-controller maximum in that schedule; diagnosis can result in a lower amount.

Check Nintendo’s support channel for your country before relying on any UK amount. Exchange rates, tax treatment, service policies, and published caps can change, and a UK schedule cannot be used to estimate a North American bill.

  • They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy 2 player action in supported games

How to send a Nintendo Switch to Nintendo for service

Nintendo tells customers to troubleshoot first and not send products without contacting Nintendo. Use this sequence to avoid an unlinked or rejected shipment.

  1. Confirm the region. Use the Nintendo support process for your residence. The U.S./Canada request flow is regional; customers elsewhere must use their own Nintendo support channel.
  2. Run Nintendo’s troubleshooting steps. Record what you tried and the exact symptom: for example, whether the console charges, displays an image, recognizes game cards, or connects to controllers. Troubleshooting can identify a settings issue and gives the service team useful details.
  3. Collect purchase and product information. Have your receipt or retailer order record, console model, serial number, contact details, and a clear description of the fault ready. Proof of purchase is used for warranty review.
  4. Create an official service request. Follow Nintendo’s online service-request process or contact consumer support. Do not mail the console first. Nintendo will provide the applicable instructions for the item and region.
  5. Review the service terms and any estimate. If the issue is outside warranty, read the quoted or displayed charge and authorization conditions before agreeing to paid work. The exact amount is product-specific on the U.S./Canada process.
  6. Prepare the shipment exactly as instructed. Use the packaging, label, included components, and shipping method specified in the request. Do not send extra game cards, accessories, or personal items unless Nintendo asks for them.
  7. Keep the request active. Nintendo’s FAQ says a service request generally expires six months after setup. If it expires, create a new request rather than shipping against an old reference.
  8. Save the confirmation and tracking details. Retain the request number, carrier receipt, and a copy of the console’s serial number and condition until the product is returned.

Prepare for possible data loss before shipping

Nintendo warns that saved data may not be recoverable during service. Before sending a working console, make every backup or transfer that your account, game, and console settings allow. Confirm that you know the Nintendo Account credentials used on the system and photograph the console, serial-number label, and included items. These steps document what you shipped and reduce avoidable disruption, but they cannot guarantee that every save or setting will survive a repair or replacement.

How to decide between Nintendo service and buying another unit

The practical choice depends on eligibility, damage, price, data, and the condition you require. Use Nintendo’s diagnosis rather than assuming a replacement is automatic.

Decision factor Official Nintendo service Buying a replacement
Warranty eligibility Potentially no-charge handling for a qualifying defect within the applicable warranty, subject to proof of purchase and inspection. You pay the replacement’s current retail price regardless of whether the original fault would have qualified.
Damage type Physical, liquid, accidental, modified, or unauthorized-repaired units may be offered paid service or declined under the warranty exclusions. A new purchase avoids waiting for a diagnosis but does not recover the cost of an excluded repair.
Price certainty U.S./Canada pricing is product-specific through the service request; no single fee table is published on the cited pages. The seller’s listed price is visible before purchase, but accessories and games may add to the total.
Turnaround Depends on the regional process, shipping, diagnosis, and authorization; no universal time is stated in the cited policy. Depends on stock and the seller’s delivery or pickup options.
Data risk Saved data may not be recoverable, especially if Nintendo replaces the unit. The original console remains with you, but a replacement still requires your own account and save-transfer steps.
Condition of the returned hardware Nintendo may return the repaired unit or a refurbished unit meeting functional new-product specifications, with possible minor cosmetic defects. You choose the condition and model you buy, subject to what is available.

For an eligible manufacturing defect, opening a Nintendo service request first preserves the possibility of warranty treatment. For obvious impact or liquid damage, compare Nintendo’s diagnosis and fee with the cost of another console or an official Joy-Con replacement, while recognizing that buying a controller does not replace a warranty claim for a console fault.

Common situations and the correct next step

A console fails during the first year with no visible damage

Document the symptom, locate proof of purchase, complete troubleshooting, and submit the regional service request. Nintendo will inspect the product and decide whether repair or replacement is appropriate.

A Joy-Con develops a fault

Joy-Con controllers are Nintendo accessories and have their own service-request path. Treat the controller as the item being evaluated: provide its purchase information when available, describe the fault, and follow Nintendo’s shipping instructions. Do not assume that a controller problem automatically qualifies if the unit has been modified or physically damaged.

The console has a cracked shell, bent port, or liquid exposure

These conditions fall outside the warranty exclusions. Contact Nintendo anyway, because paid service may be available, but expect the result and price to depend on inspection. Do not describe accidental damage as a manufacturing defect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The serial number is damaged or missing

Nintendo’s warranty limitations include altered or removed serial numbers. Contact support before shipping; the service team may need another way to identify the product, and warranty treatment may not be available.

The original warranty has ended

Nintendo can still offer factory service for a fee when the product and fault are serviceable. Create a request to obtain the item-specific terms and price. If Nintendo replaces the product, the returned unit receives the separate 100-day-or-remaining-warranty protection described above.

Key points to remember

  • North American warranty coverage is generally one year from purchase and is designed for defects in materials and workmanship.
  • Keep proof of purchase and use the support process for your region.
  • Nintendo, not the customer, chooses repair or replacement and may use functionally equivalent refurbished parts or products.
  • Physical, liquid, accidental, modified, unauthorized-repaired, commercial-use, and serial-number problems are outside or can void warranty coverage, although paid service may remain possible.
  • Do not ship a console without an official service request, and prepare for saved data not to be recoverable.
  • The only figures listed here are the dated UK maximums and should not be treated as current U.S./Canada prices.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
