Nintendo tested the idea behind Switch 2’s GameChat on a modified original Nintendo Switch, adding memory and improving the CPU. It was a development platform for exploring the feature—not a consumer model or an early Switch 2. The work began before Switch 2 had taken shape.
What Nintendo changed on the prototype Switch
Director Sumikazu Ono said Nintendo’s early research ran on “a Switch console with increased memory and an improved CPU.” The team used the modified hardware because Switch 2 did not yet exist as a defined platform; the prototype was a way to explore the communication concept using available technology, not a version intended for sale. Nintendo’s developer interview describes the work as research into built-in features for the next system.
Why Nintendo explored GameChat before Switch 2 existed
Nintendo developer Sumikazu Ono said work on built-in features for the next hardware began around 2020. Producer Kouichi Kawamoto had asked the team to propose ideas that could make the next system distinctive. The team’s guiding image was a “student lounge”: a place where friends could gather to play the same game, play different games, watch, or simply spend time together. It was a design concept, not a claim about measured player behavior.
Meanwhile, teams responsible for built-in features and system software were separately investigating communication technology, including voice chat, live streaming, and microphone noise cancellation. Ono and technical director Eiji Tokunaga brought the work together in a demo to see whether the social concept could work as a built-in feature.

From a six-month prototype to a finished feature
Ono said the prototype took roughly six months to complete. Tokunaga stressed that moving from that prototype to the final product took much longer. Nintendo’s Japanese careers account describes the prototype as a way to validate the idea before the team moved into full production, repeatedly implementing, trying, and evaluating possible designs. Nintendo’s careers account gives that additional development context.
More than 100 people worked on development, according to Nintendo’s second installment of its Switch 2 developer interview. The team also held daily meetings using GameChat to test, verify, and improve the feature. Nintendo’s Part 2 interview describes that later development process.

What GameChat does on Switch 2
GameChat is a built-in Switch 2 feature combining voice and video chat with game-screen sharing. Nintendo Support says a room can include up to 12 friends, and up to four participants can share video or their game screen at a time. These are Nintendo’s feature limits, not independent performance measurements. Nintendo’s GameChat guide and FAQ lists the functions and limits.

As of October 2026, Nintendo Support lists a Nintendo Switch 2, a persistent internet connection, and Nintendo Switch Online membership as requirements. The temporary open-access period without membership ran from June 5, 2025, through March 31, 2026; Nintendo’s 2025 investor presentation also gives that end date.

Voice chat
You can use Switch 2’s built-in microphone for voice chat; a separate microphone is not needed for that purpose.
Video chat
Video chat requires a compatible USB camera, sold separately. Nintendo names the Nintendo Switch 2 Camera as an example. Some other USB cameras may work, but Nintendo does not guarantee compatibility; use the console’s Test USB Camera setting to check a connected camera. If you only want voice chat, you do not need to buy a camera.
