Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition launched for Nintendo Switch on July 18, 2024. It packages more than 150 short speedrunning challenges based on 13 NES games, with solo, online and local multiplayer modes. The original full NES games are not included.
What is Nintendo World Championships: NES Edition?
It is a collection of brief challenges built around moments from classic NES games, rather than a bundle of the original games. Nintendo says there are more than 150 challenges drawn from 13 NES titles. Players replay each segment to improve their times or compete with others. Nintendo’s launch announcement explicitly notes that the full NES games are not included.
What modes can you play?
Speedrun
Take on short, solo challenges and try to set a faster time. The format focuses on specific moments from NES games, so it is about repeating and refining a segment rather than playing through a full original game.
World Championship
Compete online through leaderboards. Nintendo’s launch notice described five challenges rotating weekly. Online features require a Nintendo Account, internet access and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership; membership is sold separately and availability may vary by country. Survival
Race against ghost data through rounds of challenges. Players who fall behind are eliminated between rounds; Nintendo’s US launch page describes Silver and Gold divisions.
Party
Play locally with up to eight players on one Nintendo Switch system. Nintendo notes that additional accessories may be required for multiplayer. Its UK page lists the Nintendo Entertainment System Controller and Nintendo Switch Pro Controller as compatible, but the NES-style controller is optional.
When did it come out, and what versions are available?
The game released on Nintendo Switch on July 18, 2024. Nintendo UK lists both a downloadable version and a game-card edition. The physical Deluxe Set includes a game card and collectibles; Nintendo’s announcement-trailer description specifies a gold-colored replica Game Pak, 13 art cards and five pins. Contents and availability can vary by region, so check the local listing before buying. Nintendo UK’s game page and Nintendo Canada’s product page identify the game and physical offering.
Nintendo’s US launch page showed a $20.99 digital price against a $29.99 regular price, and a $59.99 regular price for the Deluxe Set in its launch-period listing. Those were US figures shown at launch, not confirmed current prices. Check your regional Nintendo store for current price and stock.

Do you need Nintendo Switch Online?
Not for every feature. Nintendo requires a Nintendo Account, internet access and paid Nintendo Switch Online membership for online features such as World Championship competition. Local Party play is a separate option and supports up to eight players on one system, subject to controller needs.
