Nintendo announced a Minecraft Creeper-themed New Nintendo 2DS LL in Japan on July 3, 2018, with a Japanese launch set for August 2 that year. The system—called New Nintendo 2DS XL in overseas markets—featured a raised, textured Creeper design and came with Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition pre-installed. Its ¥16,980 price was the Japanese launch suggested retail price before tax, not a current resale valuation.
What was the Minecraft Creeper 2DS XL?
It was a special-design version of Nintendo’s 2D clamshell handheld, part of the Nintendo 3DS family. Nintendo Japan announced the Creeper Edition on July 3, 2018, as one of three specially designed New Nintendo 2DS LL systems planned for that summer. Nintendo’s official English-language materials call the overseas model New Nintendo 2DS XL; “LL” and “XL” are regional names for this model, not different hardware generations. Nintendo’s 2017 corporate release explains the overseas naming.
The console’s lid and body used Minecraft Creeper-inspired styling. Nintendo highlighted the shell’s raised, textured feel, making the design a physical surface treatment rather than only a printed image. Mojang’s Lydia Winters, who was involved in the design, said the team wanted the look to be unmistakably Minecraft: “We looked at different ideas, but wanted to make sure it was iconically Minecraft,” she said in a Minecraft update published November 20, 2018. She also described a practical constraint: “We had to go back and forth around how far down the pixels could go because the cover needs to protect the hardware inside.”
When did it launch, and what did it cost?
Nintendo Japan scheduled the Creeper Edition for August 2, 2018, at a suggested retail price of ¥16,980 before tax. Those are historical Japanese launch details from Nintendo’s July 3, 2018 announcement; the price does not indicate what a used or collectible unit costs today.

Yes. Nintendo Japan said Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition was pre-installed. Nintendo UK describes its overseas Creeper Edition bundle as including the digital game on a 4GB microSD card, along with a Nintendo 3DS AC adapter. The UK page names the product “New Nintendo 2DS XL – Creeper Edition with Minecraft: New Nintendo 3DS Edition.” Bundle details can vary by market, so the UK contents should not be assumed to describe every Japanese-market package. Nintendo UK’s product page provides the regional bundle description.
What should collectors check before buying one?
The original announcements establish the launch configuration, not current stock, secondhand value, or the condition of any particular listing. They also do not establish whether a used system still has the pre-installed game or whether it can be restored. Check the individual listing and seller details rather than treating the original bundle description as a guarantee.

- Region and model name: Japanese units are labeled New Nintendo 2DS LL; overseas units use New Nintendo 2DS XL.
- Physical condition: Ask for clear photos of the textured shell, screens, hinges, buttons, and any included accessories.
- Bundle completeness: Confirm what is actually included. Nintendo UK listed an AC adapter with its Creeper bundle, but do not assume a secondhand listing includes one.
- Game status: Verify whether the digital game is present on the specific console; the original pre-installation does not prove its status on a used unit.
Nintendo UK’s page notes that its special-edition designs are examples and may no longer be available to purchase. No official sales total, production-run figure, scarcity count, or current resale value is established by the cited Nintendo pages.
