The test ran from July 28 through August 10, 2025, and applications are no longer available. It was not a conventional game beta: Nintendo described it as a test of the same unnamed Nintendo Switch Online feature examined in October 2024.
What Nintendo announced
Nintendo reopened its mysterious Nintendo Switch Online: Playtest Program in July 2025. The company did not reveal a final product name, launch date, or complete description of the feature. Participants were asked not to disclose information about the test software or website.
The program was framed as testing a new Nintendo Switch Online service or feature, rather than testing a separately announced game. Participation also did not guarantee that the feature would eventually launch commercially or become a permanent Nintendo Switch Online benefit.
Application and test schedule
| Event | Date and time |
|---|---|
| Application creation | July 18, 2025, at 6 p.m. ET / 3 p.m. PT |
| Formal application opening | July 21, 2025, at 11 a.m. ET / 8 a.m. PT |
| Planned test period | July 28 through August 10, 2025 |
Nintendo could stop accepting applications early if the participant limit was reached. The 11 a.m. ET time referred to the formal application opening—not the start of the test itself.

- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
Who was eligible?
The published requirements for the 2025 program included:
- An active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- An applicant who was at least 18 years old.
- A Nintendo Account registered in Japan, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Canada, Brazil, or Mexico.
Eligibility depended on the Nintendo Account’s registered country and membership status, not simply on where someone was physically located. A standard Nintendo Switch Online membership was not enough according to the reported requirements.

- 6.2” LCD screen
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
- Nintendo Switch is the home of Mario & friends
The test supported both the original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. That hardware compatibility applied to the 2025 test and does not establish that the eventual feature would be exclusive to Switch 2.
Individual and group applications
Applicants could apply individually or in groups of up to four people. Group applications did not remove the age, account-region, or Expansion Pack requirements, and applicants should not have assumed that every group member would automatically be accepted.

Nintendo expected to accept up to 40,000 participants worldwide, an expansion from the 10,000-person limit reported for the October 2024 test. Applications outside Japan were reported to use a first-come, first-served process, while Japanese applicants could be selected through a lottery if demand exceeded capacity.
What was the mystery feature?
Nintendo officially confirmed only that it was testing the same new Switch Online service or feature previously tested in 2024. Reports, leaks, and participant accounts described a shared online environment with block-based construction and multiplayer interaction. Some coverage compared it with Minecraft or an MMO, and other reports linked it to Nintendo’s Splatoon team.

- This pre-owned product is not Apple certified, but has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon-qualified suppliers.
- 6.2” LCD screen.
- Three play modes: TV, tabletop, and handheld
- Local co-op, online, and local wireless multiplayer
- Detachable Joy-Con controllers
Those descriptions were not a complete official Nintendo specification. The safest conclusion is that Nintendo was testing an unusual shared online experience, while the feature’s final form—and whether it would ever launch—remained unknown.

The first test filled extremely quickly. The October 2024 application pool for up to 10,000 participants reportedly closed almost immediately; Nintendo of America said registration was full at about 11:07 a.m. ET, while other coverage described the availability as lasting only minutes or seconds.

- One player can use a Joy-Con in each hand
- Two players can each take one
- Multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options (additional Joy-Con sold separately)
- Slip a set of Joy-Con into a Joy-Con grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.
That history made it sensible for eligible applicants to be signed in to their Nintendo Account before the announced opening time. However, it does not prove that the 2025 application period closed at exactly the same speed.
What applicants would have needed to do
- Confirm that their Nintendo Account had an active Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership.
- Confirm that the account holder was at least 18.
- Check that the account was registered in a supported country.
- Sign in to Nintendo’s official playtest portal before the opening time.
- Create an individual application or a group application of up to four people.
- Submit the application when applications formally opened at 11 a.m. ET on July 21, 2025.
- Watch the application page for acceptance instructions and any required software download information.
Current status
The relevant application window and test period have both passed. Anyone finding old posts describing the program as newly open should treat them as dated 2025 coverage, not as evidence of a current August or September 2026 registration period.
For future programs, Nintendo’s official playtest page is the appropriate place to check availability. Nintendo’s general Nintendo Switch Online page may also help explain the Expansion Pack membership, but readers should not purchase it solely for this closed playtest.
